Two iterations of an Ernest Hemingway classic short story. Burt Lancaster kicks it off with the 1946 version followed by the Lee Marvin led 1964 version. Both are great and plenty of criterion extras making this among my favorite spine in their awesome collection. There’s also a Russian student take on the short story adding a third version of a great story. Highly recommended and if it’s 50% a must buy. I already owned it and gave this as a gift who instantly called me two days later with high praise of the films.

A Favorite All-Time Classic
I've always enjoyed this classic film. Ava Gardner is my favorite all-time actress. She's great in the role of Kitty. Burt Lancaster is also fine as the torn man in love with a woman he struggles to have. This is based on one of Hemingway's short stories, and they did a fine job. Same with the remake in 1964 with Lee Marvin and Clu Gulagher. You will not be disappointed in either version, but my favorite is the orignal.

I like value. Two movie versions of a cool story for the price of one, I am in. The Burt Lancaster version is film noir cool, while the Lee Marvin has that manic 60’s television feel. The Lee Marvin version gets bonus for Ronald Reagan’s portrayal of the heavy. He is quite menacing.
