Germination Instructions

Sow indoors at any time. Germination can be slow so to speed things up, scratch the hard seed case in one place using a metal nail file or similar then soak the seeds in hot water for 24-48 hours. This is called "seed stratification" and if you are not familiar with how to do this, have a look at some videos on youtube etc - not hard.

Sow 4-6 mm deep into a well-draining compost mix - ideally a mix of  50% regular compost, 50% vermiculite (which I sell in the Accessories section of my eBay shop)

Ideal germination temperature 21-27°C so ideally on a window sill over a radiator. Keep well ventilated to avoid rot. Transplant seedlings when they are 5cm tall to individual pots and grow on.

Tip - Don't be tempted to try to remove the seed case from young seedlings - I have tried and it damages the leaves. They will eventually cast off the seed coat naturally.

Growing Instructions

Can not tolerate even mild frost. Minimum temp. 12°C. Grow in a greenhouse or conservatory. Prefers a well-drained sandy soil in full, hot sun. Water well when the compost is dry. Continue to water even if the leaves are lost over winter.

Olly's General Guide to Seed Sowing!

I love sowing seeds and it runs in the family - dad, grandad and finally my great-grandad for whom the hobby helped him get over his experiences in the Great War. I still get a big kick when I see the first seedling poking through from a new plant that I have never sown before or been successful at. However, even the most experienced gardeners draw "blanks" from time to time. Whilst I sow all the seeds that I sell so I know that they are viable, some are trickier than others and problems can arise so here are some tips to make "blanks" few and far between:

1) Dont Rush! Tempting though it is when that packet arrives in the post to simply bung the seeds in some compost!

2) Google and Youtube are your friends! Take some time so see the methods other people use to germinate the seed.

3) Think Nature! What conditions do seeds face? For example a seed from a tropical plant will fall to the warm, wet and dark jungle floor. A seed from the mountains of Europe will fall to the floor in Autumn, then have to endure months of freezing temperatures before germinating in the spring. So as growers, what we are trying to do is to simulate the conditions that the seeds will naturally experience and there are plenty of tricks that can be done to short cut the processes somewhat.

4) Good compost pays dividends . The best investment you can make is to purchase three bags - one of potting compost, one of vermiculite and one of horticultural sand. With these three bags I can make up whatever soil type a particular seed likes (although for most seeds I find a 50/50 mix of compost and vermiculite works just fine)

5) Rot is your enemy. The single biggest danger to seed germination is rot - either before or after "damping off" the seeds germinate. To reduce the risk, ensure you have good free draining soil mix and that it is moist but not wet. The best investment you will make is a bottle of 4% hydrogen peroxide (mixed with water 1:4) - this disinfects and also encourages germination. Unless the seed variety absolutely requires it I prefer NOT to cover my seeds trays with plastic bags, Whilst germination is often faster this way, it greatly increases the risk of rot. I prefer to place my seed trans inside a watertight plastic tray and water from the bottom - airflow over the surface reduces the risk. The surface is kept moist as required by spraying with my water/peroxide mix (see above)

This book kept me guessing and housing until the end, it deserves five stars!
Format: Kindle
I started to read this book because my friend was reading it on the way to swim practice and I wondered what kept her so intrigued and unresponsive. I asked her about it and she told me what it was about and what was currently happening. I was already rather to start it. I bought it and immediately began to read. I read for about four hours straight- stupidly- no joke!! It was one of few mystery/action-adventure novels that are actually really unpredictable in great ways! All I could think about was the story as I say in middle-school today, wondering what would happen next. I would most certainly recommend this to any reader, wether out not they like mystery or not!

Awesome Information for Kids - History, legends and fun facts
Format: Flexibound, Format: Flexibound
Packed with interesting and entertaining facts and legends for kids (and adults but def geared towards kids). My youngest could only read in small doses because it’s A LOT of info packed on the pages. They really enjoyed learning about Barcelona’s affinity for giants, dragons, and good versus evil. So many fascinating tid bits got them excited about our summer trip (we are going to Barcelona!). Highlights: executioners would sell dead people’s shoes which the townspeople put in front of their houses to ward off evil spirits. Gaudi didn’t use straight lines because there are none in nature. He was so obsessed with the basilica plans he stopped hygiene and wore shoes made of woven plant roots. My kids loved the section on chocolate and candies (my vote is churros) and the tradition of the poop log 💩 Overall we really enjoy this book and it will join us on our travels. It got my kids excited to see the giant goldfish sculpture, see the sharks at the aquarium, the amusement park, fountains, statues and so many of the history rich areas of Barcelona. Highly recommend if you’re planning a trip with kids to get them engaged, or for a report for school, or just to learn about other places and cultures. Please note - this is not a travel guide for adults. No hotels, tours, prices etc are included.

Lots of great ideas and suggestions - but lacking some practical details
Format: Flexibound
Each of the 16 walks featured in this book have between 3 to 6 pages covering sights, tips and trivia. The graphics are very appealing with a nice variety of layouts and colors. My 5 year-old can’t obviously read this on her own, but she enjoys pointing to the pictures and hearing the descriptions about this amazing city that we’ve visited in the past. For self-guided trips, this book offers a way to get school-aged travelers with planning what to see and selecting foods to try. The book is not really geared for navigating/orienting other than just the starting point for the walk. The only map just inside the cover contains a view of all the starting points in relation to the city. The places featured within a walk seem laid out in a logical fashion, but you will definitely need another travel guide and/or smart phone to be sure you make it to the various destinations noted. I felt the book did justice to the awesome sights by Antoni Gaudi and I was pleased to find the Palau de la Musica Catalana also featured. The books is bursting with ideas for kid-friendly things to do. Even though it is geared to a younger audience, I am deducting a star as practical information seems to be lacking either in the section for the walk itself or in a summary/overview section. Examples of details I’d like included: a map view for the specific walk of where things are within relation to each other, the distance between sites, how much time to allow getting to each of the sites, how to best get to them (foot vs. public transit), the total distance of the walk, the minimum recommended time to complete the walk, and if there are walks that would be best grouped together for a full-day or half-day. As the book does not have these details, you’ll need to figure them out on your own and tailor it to what your family can manage.
