Previously considered a form of Philodendron tripartitum, it is now recognized as a separate entity defined above all by one of the most dramatic heteroblastic leaf transformations in the genus: juvenile plants produce very narrow, elongated, strap-shaped leaves with no lobing whatsoever — simple, linear, and entire — that give no hint of what is coming. As the plant climbs and matures, each successive leaf begins to develop increasingly defined lateral lobes flanking the central lobe, progressively widening and deepening with each new leaf until the plant arrives at its full tri-lobed, deeply tripartite mature form — broad, boldly three-sectioned leaves with the two lateral lobes extending outward from a prominent central section. The progression from strap leaf to fully tri-lobed mature form can take considerable time and vertical growth, making a moss pole not merely a care recommendation but a prerequisite for the plant ever showing its defining character. Leaf texture throughout is thinly coriaceous — thin leathery and flexible rather than stiff — with a clean dark green glossy surface and clear venation.
