Description and Planting Instructions
Description:
Scientific Name: Echinopsis spachiana (formerly known as Trichocereus spachianus)
Common Names: Yellow Tower Cactus, Golden Torch Cactus
Family: Cactaceae
Origin: Native to Argentina
Appearance: The Yellow Tower Cactus is a columnar cactus that can grow up to 6-9 feet (1.8-2.7 meters) tall and about 2-3 inches (5-7.5 cm) in diameter. It has a bright green to yellow-green stem with well-defined ribs. Along the ribs, there are clusters of golden-yellow spines that give the cactus its distinctive look. In summer, it produces large, white, fragrant flowers that bloom at night, followed by small, fleshy fruits.
Planting Instructions
1. Choosing the Right Location
Climate:
Temperature: The Yellow Tower Cactus prefers warm temperatures and can tolerate light frost. It thrives in USDA hardiness zones 8-11.
Sunlight: This plant requires full sun to partial shade. It does best with at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight each day.
Soil:
Type: Use well-draining soil, such as a cactus or succulent mix. If planting in the ground, ensure the soil is sandy or gritty to promote good drainage.
pH: The optimal soil pH is slightly acidic to neutral, between 6.0 and 7.5.
2. Preparing the Planting Site
Containers:
Pot Selection: Choose a pot with drainage holes to prevent water from sitting in the soil, which can cause root rot.
Soil Preparation: Fill the pot with the well-draining soil mix, leaving enough room to place the cactus.
Garden Bed:
Location: Select a sunny spot with well-draining soil.
Soil Preparation: Amend the soil with sand or grit to improve drainage if necessary.
3. Planting the Yellow Tower Cactus
Timing:
Season: Planting is best done in the spring or early summer when the cactus is actively growing.
Planting:
Removing from Container: Carefully remove the cactus from its current container, being mindful of the spines. Using gloves or tongs can help protect your hands.
Placement: Place the cactus in the new pot or garden bed at the same depth it was previously growing.
Backfilling: Fill in around the cactus with soil mix, gently firming it down to support the plant.
4. Watering
Frequency: Water the Yellow Tower Cactus thoroughly, but allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot.
Method: Water at the base of the plant to avoid getting water on the stems, which can cause rot.
5. Light and Temperature
Indoors: Place the cactus in a south or west-facing window where it can receive bright, direct sunlight.
Outdoors: If grown outdoors, ensure it is in a location with plenty of sunlight but some protection from the harsh midday sun to prevent scorching.
6. Fertilizing
Type: Use a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength.
Frequency: Fertilize once a month during the growing season (spring and summer). Do not fertilize during the winter when the cactus is dormant.
7. Pest and Disease Management
Pests: Watch for common cactus pests such as mealybugs, scale, and spider mites. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
Diseases: Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal diseases. If necessary, apply fungicides labeled for use on cacti.
8. Repotting
Frequency: Repot the Yellow Tower Cactus every 2-3 years to refresh the soil and accommodate growth.
Timing: Repot in the spring, just before the growing season begins.
9. Propagation
Cuttings: The Yellow Tower Cactus can be propagated from stem cuttings. Cut a healthy stem segment, allow it to callus over for a few days, then plant it in well-draining soil.
Seeds: Although less common, it can also be propagated from seeds. Sow the seeds in well-draining soil and keep them moist until they germinate.
Additional Tips
Winter Care: Reduce watering in the winter months when the cactus is dormant. Protect it from frost if grown outdoors in cooler climates.
Handling: Be careful when handling the cactus due to its spines. Using gloves or tools can help prevent injury.
Growth Habit: This cactus is slow-growing but can become quite tall over time. Ensure it has enough space to grow and support its height.
With proper care and attention to its specific needs, the Yellow Tower Cactus can be a stunning and low-maintenance addition to your plant collection.

Pleased overall
Color: Light Brown, Size: 4
They have an unfinished feel, and the underside screws used to hold the shelf on the poles strip out really easy. Tighten those by hand and with care. Other than that, they look great and were easy to install. Came with a full set of hardware including anchors for various wall types. Stable enough to hold small to medium sized Lego sets (don't try to put Lego Hogwarts size kits on them--not big enough). Bought 3 sets of 4 and used others as Book shelves. They work very well for novel size or paperback sized books. Just make sure you anchor them well into the wall. These will only be as good as the installation.

Nice and Inexpensive!

Thé shelves are good quality and easy to hang. Thé instructions do leave a bit to be desired as they misidentify which anchor to use for dry wall. I followed instructions for the first shelf and it was not very stable. I switched to the other anchors and it was great. All hardware in included. These require minimum size holes in your wall, but it is a floating shelf so be prepared to patch when you take them down.  It’s a set of 4 so a good value!

Not worth the time
Color: Light Brown, Size: 4
Plastic pieces for the dry wall broke and also created an even bigger hole in the wall. One of the shelves wouldn’t even stay level despite following all instructions. Wood gives you splinters as well since it’s not sanded down.

I was looking for something that wasn’t your basic Japanese style black and white cardboard room divider and this checked all my boxes. It looks very nice and stands out without being obnoxious.
