Mammillaria gracilis var. fragilis, commonly known as the Thimble Mammillaria or Thimble Cactus, is a charming, small cactus species native to Mexico. It is popular for its dense clusters of tiny, cylindrical stems that resemble thimbles. The Thimble Mammillaria features soft, white spines that cover its surface, giving it a woolly or fuzzy appearance. In the spring, this cactus produces beautiful, small, pink or white flowers that encircle the top of the plant, adding vibrant color to its otherwise understated form.
- Size: Grows up to 6–8 inches (15–20 cm) tall and spreads up to 12 inches (30 cm) wide in clumping clusters.
- Hardiness: Tolerates temperatures as low as 20°F (-6°C) for short periods. USDA hardiness zones 9–11.
- Light: Prefers bright, direct sunlight for at least 4–6 hours a day. Indoors, place near a south- or west-facing window.
- Soil: Requires well-draining soil, such as a cactus or succulent mix, to prevent waterlogging and root rot.
- Watering: Water thoroughly, but allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Water less frequently in winter, when the cactus is dormant.
- Temperature: Thrives in temperatures between 70–90°F (21–32°C). Protect from frost and prolonged exposure to cold temperatures.
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years or when the plant becomes rootbound, using a pot with excellent drainage.
Care Tips:
- Indoor Care: Ensure the cactus gets enough direct sunlight and avoid overwatering, especially in winter. Use a well-draining potting mix to help prevent root rot.
- Outdoor Care: In warmer climates, plant in a sunny, well-draining spot. Protect from frost during the winter months.
- Maintenance: The Thimble Mammillaria is easy to care for but can occasionally need pruning to maintain its compact shape. Fertilize sparingly with cactus fertilizer during the growing season to encourage optimal growth.
