Pelargonium radens, commonly known as trailing geranium or creeping pelargonium, is a low-growing, spreading perennial native to Southern Africa. It typically forms a dense mat of fragrant, round, soft green leaves that are slightly serrated and have a soft, hairy texture. The plant produces delicate, pale pink to dark lavender flowers with darker markings, blooming in clusters during the warmer months. Pelargonium radens has a trailing or creeping habit, making it an excellent choice for ground cover, hanging baskets, or container plantings. It is well-suited for sunny gardens, thriving in well-drained, slightly acidic soils. Once established, this plant is drought-tolerant and can handle moderate heat, making it ideal for Mediterranean-style gardens or dry, low-water landscapes. The pleasant scent of its foliage adds an aromatic element to gardens, and it is often used as a companion plant in herb gardens or as a decorative ground cover in both garden and patio settings. Zones 8-11
Germination
Germinating Pelargonium radens seeds requires warmth, light, and a well-draining soil mix. Start by sowing the seeds in a shallow tray or pot filled with a light, well-draining seed compost. Gently press the seeds into the surface of the soil but do not cover them, as they need light to germinate. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, and place the tray in a warm location with temperatures around 20–22°C (68–72°F). It's essential to provide plenty of light, so if growing indoors, use grow lights or place the tray in a bright, sunny spot. Germination typically occurs within 2–3 weeks, but it can take a little longer depending on the conditions. Once the seedlings develop a few sets of true leaves, they can be carefully transplanted into individual pots and acclimated to outdoor conditions before being planted in their permanent location. Pelargonium radens thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, making it an excellent choice for containers, hanging baskets, or as a ground cover.
