Philodendron 'El Choco Red' (Philodendron rubrijuvenile)

Philodendron 'El Choco Red' is Philodendron rubrijuvenile, an accepted Philodendron species from Colombia. It is grown for velvety green upper leaf surfaces and red to burgundy tones on juvenile leaf backs, with the strongest colour usually visible while the leaf is young.

The plant grows as a climbing aroid with nodes that can produce aerial roots. A textured support, steady warmth and higher humidity help the stem anchor and allow the leaves to become larger and more defined.

Velvety green leaves with red juvenile backs

  • Species and origin: Accepted Philodendron species native to Colombia.
  • Foliage: Velvety green upper surfaces with red to burgundy tones on young leaf backs.
  • Growth habit: Climbing Philodendron with aerial roots at the stem nodes.
  • Growing conditions: Warm, humid conditions and an airy mix help roots stay active and new velvet leaves unfurl cleanly.
  • Support response: Leaves usually become larger and more defined when the stem can climb.

Colombian origin of Philodendron rubrijuvenile

Philodendron rubrijuvenile Croat & R.Kaufmann was published in Aroideana 45(1): 214 in 2022 and is accepted as native to Colombia, where it grows primarily in the wet tropical biome. Indoors, keep it in bright filtered light, warm root conditions, higher humidity and a lightly moist, airy substrate.

The velvety blade surface marks more easily than thick glossy Philodendron foliage. Keep water directed into the substrate rather than over the velvet leaves, and let new foliage unfurl without handling. The red underside is a juvenile-growth feature, so individual leaves can soften in colour as they mature.

Warmth, humidity and support for velvet foliage

  • Light: Give bright indirect light, around 10,000–20,000 lux; strong direct sun can mark the velvety leaf surface.
  • Watering: Water when the upper 30–50% of the mix has dried, then let excess water drain fully.
  • Substrate: Use an airy aroid mix with bark, coco chips, perlite or pumice and a modest moisture buffer.
  • Pot choice: Use a pot with drainage holes and enough depth or weight to hold the climbing stem and support securely.
  • Repotting: Repot when roots fill the pot, the support becomes unstable or the substrate starts breaking down. Move up gradually to keep the root zone airy.
  • Humidity: Aim for 60–80% for smoother leaf expansion and better aerial-root activity.
  • Temperature: Keep at 18–29°C and protect the plant from temperatures below 15°C.
  • Support: Train the stem onto a moss pole, tree-fern-style pole or plank while the internodes are still flexible.
  • Feeding: Use a balanced fertiliser at low to moderate strength during active growth.
  • Growth rate: Expect moderate climbing growth once the plant is rooted, warm and supported. Supported stems can produce larger leaves over time.
  • Placement: Place it where the velvet leaves have room to open without rubbing against glass, walls, shelves or neighbouring plants.
  • Semi-hydroponics: This Philodendron can adapt to mineral or semi-hydro substrates if roots are transitioned gradually and the reservoir is kept clean.
  • Pruning: Remove yellowing or damaged leaves and trim stretched stems above a node if the plant needs reshaping.
  • Propagation: Root stem cuttings with at least one node in warm, humid conditions.

Leaf marks, stalled unfurling and pest checks

  • Crispy patches: Check for direct sun, dry root pockets or low humidity around emerging leaves.
  • Stalled leaf unfurling: Increase humidity and check that the root ball is not drying too hard between waterings.
  • Yellowing lower leaves: Inspect the root zone for cold, wet mix or poor drainage.
  • Small new leaves: Check light, support and root health. Undersized growth often appears when the stem cannot climb or the roots are weak.
  • Fine speckling or dull patches: Check leaf undersides, petiole bases, cataphylls and new growth for thrips, mites, mealybugs and scale.

Ingestion safety

Philodendron rubrijuvenile is toxic if ingested. It contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, lips, tongue and throat. Keep the plant out of reach of pets and children, and wash hands after pruning or taking cuttings if sap contacts the skin.

Rubrijuvenile and El Choco Red

Philodendron is an Araceae genus whose name comes from Greek roots meaning “tree-loving”, reflecting the climbing or tree-associated habit of many species. The species epithet rubrijuvenile refers to the red colour of immature leaves. The plant circulated as Philodendron sp. 'El Choco Red' before it was described as Philodendron rubrijuvenile.

Choose Philodendron 'El Choco Red' for velvety green leaves and red-toned juvenile leaf backs on a Colombian climbing Philodendron.

I Love The Logitech MX Master 4 Mouse
Color: Graphite, Pattern Name: Mouse, Color: Graphite, Pattern Name: Mouse
I keep buying Logitech mice because they are a great product. The mouse fits perfectly under my right hand. Very comfortable with no ergonomic issues. The scroll wheel also works perfectly and can be adjusted to be click free. The mouse instantly connected to my HP Laptop computer via the USB C dongle. The Logitech mouse is very durable and well made. The mouse isn't cheap but I feel it delivers value for the money. My previous mouse was the Logitech MX Master mouse which is still running strong however, I gave it to my wife to use at work with a Logitech keyboard. The only downside is that the dongle is not unifying so you can't connect a keyboard and a mouse through one dongle like the previous generation "unifying" receiver. UPDATE Continue to love this mouse. The feel, weight, and touch are magnificent. For me though I found the haptic feature annoying. I kept clicking it up when I didn't want the feature activated. So I turned it off! Yes you can turn it off in the Logi+ App for those of you who feel as I do. UPDATE 2 Although the Haptic feature is turned off in the app (See screenshot), the haptic feature keeps occurring. I keep activating it with my thumb which is annoying. I guess I will have to train myself to exert less pressure on my thumb to avoid doing this.

Absolute Game-Changer
Color: Graphite, Pattern Name: Mouse
First thing: don't expect this mouse to change your workflow out of the box. You will need to tailor it to your use-case using the Logi-Options+ software. That said, this mouse has completely changed how I interact with my tasks. My workflow used to include dragging the mouse pointer, entering sub-menus, navigating different UI's, using the keyboard, rinse and repeat. Now, all of that is condensed to clicks and subtle flicks of the mouse. What used to take an hour in my workflow takes 15 minutes now. The haptics are really nice. I'm a tactile person, so getting feedback similar to a game controller is a really good data point for my brain. Battery life is excellent, considering all of the features. Big thumbs-up for being rechargeable via USB-C. Build quality seems pretty excellent. I will warn that it is heavier than average, though I think this is balanced by the fact that you'll be moving your mouse far less once configured to your liking. The context wheel is an incredible addition. Again, it adds actions that simplify navigation to a single hand's input. I consider the convenience added to be comparable to that of a Stream Deck. The Context Wheel also considers which program you are interacting with, and you can customize it for every individual program in wour workflow. The keyword here is customization. Every. Single. Program. You can have a totally different button layout for all of them, and it switches on the fly. You can also have it work for multiple PCs, switching between them with a manual switch on the bottom of the mouse, up to 3 units. Further, you can use Logi-Options+ on each PC to link them together, and the mouse can actively travel between the screens of each PC, enabling dragging and dropping of files. For someone who grew up in the 90's, it feels like sorcery; like it shouldn't be so easy to set up something like that. If anything ever happens to this mouse, I'll buy another same-day. There's no going back for me now. This is the only way I want to interact with my systems.

A Worthy Upgrade to an Already Legendary Mouse
Color: Graphite, Pattern Name: Mouse
I’ve been a fan of Logitech’s MX Master line for years — my old MX Master 2S chugged along for almost six years of daily use before finally showing signs of wear. When I saw the newest version with “Ultra‑Fast Scrolling” and haptic feedback, I decided to treat myself. It was absolutely worth it. The ergonomic shape is familiar and comfortable; it still fits my hand like a glove. The new MagSpeed scroll wheel is pure magic: it can click through spreadsheets one line at a time or spin freely to zip through long documents, and you can feel a gentle vibration thanks to the customizable haptics. I didn’t think I’d care about haptic feedback in a mouse, but it makes the scroll and gesture controls feel precise and satisfying. Connectivity has improved, too. It pairs via Bluetooth or the included receiver and can switch between three devices. The 8k DPI sensor tracks on glass and just about any surface, which means I’ve stopped lugging around a mouse pad when I travel. Logitech’s Options+ software lets me assign shortcuts and macros to the side buttons, and the new Actions Ring shortcuts promise to save time by putting common tools under my thumb. Have I mentioned the battery life yet? I don't think I've had to charge this once since I got it over a month and a half ago. According to Windows BT settings, it's still at 40%+. Impressive! It also charges via USB-C so no need for an unnecessary micro-USB cable on my desk. If I had to nitpick, the price is on the high side — but considering how long my last MX Master lasted, I see it as an investment. Overall, this is the best productivity mouse I’ve ever used, and it’s a joy to see the MX series continue to get better.

Must have!
Color: Pale Gray, Pattern Name: Mouse, Color: Pale Gray, Pattern Name: Mouse
After using the MX Master 4 for a few days, I can honestly say this is one of the best mice I’ve ever owned. The ergonomic shape feels incredibly comfortable during long workdays, especially if you spend hours at a computer. The scrolling is smooth, the clicks feel premium, and the customization options make multitasking so much easier. The battery life is excellent, and switching between devices is seamless. It also looks very clean and modern on the desk. Definitely feels like a high-end productivity tool rather than just a basic mouse. Expensive? Yes. Worth it? Absolutely.

Great mouse, but not a huge leap from previous MX Masters
Color: Pale Gray, Pattern Name: Mouse
I’ve used pretty much every mouse in the MX Master series over the years, so I had a good idea of what to expect going into this—and overall, it’s still a really solid mouse. The ergonomics are excellent, just like the previous versions. It fits the hand really naturally and is comfortable for long work sessions. That’s honestly one of the biggest reasons I keep coming back to this lineup. The scroll wheel is still a standout feature. The ultra-fast scrolling is incredibly smooth and makes a big difference when you’re going through long documents or web pages. Switching between free spin and precision scrolling works flawlessly. Build quality is top-notch as expected. Everything feels premium, from the materials to the button clicks. No complaints there at all. That said, if you’ve already used previous MX Master models, this doesn’t feel like a major upgrade. It’s more of a refinement than anything new or groundbreaking. It does everything well—but it doesn’t necessarily wow you if you’re coming from something like the MX Master 3 or 3S. Overall, still a great mouse and easy to recommend—especially if you’re new to the MX Master series. But if you already have a recent model, just know this is more of an incremental improvement than a big jump.
