Horticultural Soil Mix — Pro-Grade Blend for Serious Growers

Horticultural Soil Mix is the upgrade for gardeners and growers who want what nurseries use — a premium peat-based blend with vermiculite and perlite for the air pockets and water retention that root systems crave. It's lighter and more porous than a standard garden mix, which makes it the right call for container plantings, propagation work, and the kind of high-yield raised bed setups serious vegetable gardeners obsess over.

At a glance

Material Sphagnum peat base + vermiculite + perlite
Coverage 1 yd³ ≈ 27 cubic feet of containers/beds
Weight ~800–1,200 lbs/yd³ (lightest soil we carry)
Also known as Nursery mix, container mix, potting soil (bulk), grower's mix, propagation mix
Sold by The cubic yard, bulk dump truck delivery

What it's good for

  • Container plantings, large pots, and decorative urns
  • Plant propagation, seed-starting trays, and cutting beds
  • Raised beds where serious yields and vigorous root growth are the goal
  • Nursery production and small-scale commercial growing

How much do I need?

A 4' × 8' raised bed at 12" deep takes about 1.2 cubic yards. Filling ten 24" decorative pots? Plan on roughly 0.4 cubic yards. For nursery work, 1 yard fills about 200 1-gallon pots or 80 3-gallon pots, give or take.

How Horticultural Mix compares

  • vs. Garden Soil Mix: Garden Soil Mix is heavier and more balanced — better for in-bed vegetable gardening. Horticultural is lighter and peat-heavier — better for containers and propagation.
  • vs. Topsoil Loam: Topsoil is mineral soil for in-ground lawns and grading. Horticultural Mix is peat-based and engineered for containers; can't substitute one for the other.
  • vs. Bagged Potting Soil: Same product family, sold in bulk by the yard instead of bags. Much cheaper per cubic foot than retail bagged mix.
  • vs. Compost: Compost is the pure organic amendment. Horticultural Mix is a complete container medium. Add compost to Horticultural Mix as a nutrient boost; it doesn't replace the mix.

Frequently asked questions

Is Horticultural Soil Mix the same as bagged potting soil?
Same product family, bulk-delivered instead of bagged. The retail bagged stuff is convenient for small jobs; bulk Horticultural Mix is dramatically cheaper per cubic foot for anyone filling more than a few pots.

Can I use Horticultural Mix in raised beds?
Yes, especially for high-yield growers. It's lighter than Garden Soil Mix so it drains faster — pair with consistent watering. For typical home vegetable beds, Garden Soil Mix is easier maintenance.

Why is it so light?
Sphagnum peat is the bulk of the mix, and peat is incredibly low-density compared to mineral soil. Vermiculite and perlite add air pockets that further reduce weight. The lightness is a feature — roots need air, not weight.

How long does Horticultural Mix last?
In containers, refresh annually — peat breaks down over the season and the mix shrinks. In raised beds, expect to top-dress 1–2" of fresh mix each spring.

How much does a cubic yard weigh?
About 800–1,200 lbs per cubic yard.

This version doesn’t work
I used these 2 nights in a row. I was hoping Oracoat found a solution to the problem people like me have with the regular Xylimelts: irritation of gums. As others have noted the “sensitive” version doesn’t melt and the goo that remains can be difficult to remove. I didn’t have too much trouble after the first night. However, the second day after use, it was so hard to get the remains out, I wound up with a very sore spot from digging it out. I will toss the rest. It’s too bad this effort fizzled. I hope Oracoat will find a solution For sensitive mouths. In the b meantime, I will use the original for a few nights and then stop before repeating. The idea behind the original product is fantastic. Unfortunately this attempt to make it usable for people with sensitive mouths hasn’t worked. Please try again.

An improvement over the original product, but could be better
I had used the original Xylimelts a few years back for my night time very dry mouth. They worked very well, completely dissolving overnight, but they caused sores inside my cheeks. Recently I discovered this new version which was purported to be made without the offending ingredients. They don't work quite as well, as they don't completely dissolve, but so far haven't caused any irritation. My mouth isn't completely parched as it was without any product, so it is definitely better than nothing. There is a gel-like residue in the morning that needs to be scraped off the teeth. I think Oracoat has some more R & D to do.

These work well!
These work to keep my mouth moist for hours. The only downside is the glue stays in your mouth till you can scrape it out with your finger. I thought it would dissolve but it didn’t. Very grateful to find something that moistens my mouth for so long though. They’re easy to use too. Taste slightly sweet but otherwise I didn’t notice anything.

Xylimelts Sensitive
I was sensitive to the regular Xylimelts after a few months use. Painful gums and hives inside my lips and cheeks. The sensitive version immediately corrected the problem and I’ve been using them without issue for nearly a year. The product is a lifesaver for drymouth that occurred when I was sleeping.
