Origins and History

Garden Sorrel (Rumex acetosa) is a classic Old World pot-herb that has been gathered and grown for centuries across Europe and parts of Western Asia. Its tangy, lemon-like flavor comes from naturally occurring oxalic acid, which made it a valued spring green long before citrus was widely available. Over time, people selected and maintained plants with larger, more tender leaves and reliable regrowth, moving sorrel from a wild meadow plant into kitchen gardens and farm plots as a dependable “first green” of the season. In many traditional foodways—especially in Northern and Eastern Europe—sorrel became a staple for soups, sauces, and early-season tonics, and it remains an heirloom garden favorite because it returns year after year with minimal fuss.

Appearance and Characteristics

Garden sorrel forms a low, leafy clump with smooth, arrow-shaped leaves that can range from bright green to deep green depending on growing conditions. It’s a hardy perennial (often grown as a perennial in cooler climates) and is one of the earliest greens to emerge in spring. Sorrel has a crisp texture when young and a pleasantly sharp, sour bite that becomes stronger as leaves mature. Plants can send up tall flower stalks (bolting), especially in heat or long days; once flowering begins, leaves may become smaller and tougher, though the plant usually rebounds after cutting back.

Culinary Uses

Sorrel’s signature use is as a “natural lemon” in the kitchen. Young leaves are excellent chopped into salads for a bright, tart accent, or stirred into omelets, quiches, and potato dishes. It shines in soups—especially creamy sorrel soup—where heat softens the leaves and the acidity gives a clean, lively flavor. Because sorrel can turn an olive-green color when cooked (normal for this plant), many cooks add it near the end of cooking for fresher flavor. A little goes a long way: combine it with milder greens (spinach, chard, nettles) to balance its tang.

Growing Tips

Garden sorrel grows best in USDA Zones 3–7 as a long-lived perennial, and it can also be grown in Zones 8–9 with afternoon shade and consistent moisture (often behaving as a cool-season perennial or a long-season green). Choose full sun to partial shade; in warmer areas, partial shade helps keep leaves tender and reduces bolting. Sorrel prefers fertile, well-drained soil with steady moisture, but it’s adaptable once established.
Direct sow in early spring as soon as soil can be worked, or in late summer/early fall for cool-season growth. Sow seed ¼ inch deep, keep evenly moist until germination, and thin plants to 8–12 inches apart (or wider if you want large clumps). You can also propagate by division in spring or fall—an easy way to maintain a favorite strain and refresh older clumps.

Harvesting Guidance

Begin harvesting when leaves are about 4–6 inches long. For the best texture and flavor, pick young, tender leaves regularly—this encourages continuous regrowth. Harvest by snapping or cutting outer leaves near the base, leaving the center to keep producing. If the plant sends up flower stalks, cut stalks out promptly to extend leaf production; in hot weather, you can cut the whole plant back to a few inches and water well to encourage a fresh flush. For the mildest taste, harvest in cool mornings and during the spring and fall sweet spots. Sorrel is hardy: established plants often overwinter easily and return early, making it one of the most reliable perennial greens in the garden.

Fallen for the Fallen Angel – A Guilty Pleasure Worth Every Page
Format: Kindle
There’s something deeply irresistible about a dark academia or trial-based setting, a brooding and arrogant fallen angel, and a fierce heroine with enough sass to go toe-to-toe with him. Wings So Wicked is exactly that kind of book—and I devoured it in just a couple of days. To be fair, the plot isn’t groundbreaking. If you’re looking for something fresh and innovative in terms of storyline, this might not be it. But if your reader heart beats faster at the mere mention of enemies-to-lovers, jealousy-fueled banter, magical trials, betrayals, and forbidden tension—you’ll feel right at home. It’s like catnip for those of us with this particular weakness. The chemistry between the leads could have used a slightly slower burn to make the tension sizzle longer, but I still found myself completely invested in their dynamic. There are moments and phrases that feel a bit cheesy or underdeveloped, but honestly? I didn’t care. The vibes were exactly what I wanted. This book isn’t trying to reinvent the genre—it’s here to give readers like me what we crave: high-stakes magical drama, angsty romance, and the thrill of watching a badass girl and her brooding counterpart clash and spark. If that sounds like your kind of story, Wings So Wicked will hit the mark. Here’s hoping Book 2 turns up the heat and keeps the magic alive.

my new favorite book
Format: Kindle
Ok so I never write reviews but this book was so good I felt the need to write this. Firstly your introduced to Huntyr you see her closed off hard core badass than towards the end you see the most subtle change and growth it’s amazing and the enemies to friends to lovers was just perfect, AND THE TWIST AT THE END GOT ME GOOD! You see one spicy scene the whole book but it doesn’t even MATTER BECAUSE THE BOOK WAS THAT GOOD. I’ve read 85 books in 2023-2024 so far and I’m pround to say this is my all time favorite. I’m so excited to read more of Emily Blackwoods books, this was my first time reading one of hers and I’m glad I did because HOLY!! Well done Emily well done

Fast paced romantasy you will not want to put down!
Format: Kindle
4.25 stars! I LOVED this book with similar vibes to Hush Hush, Fourth Wing, and The Serpent and the Wings of Night! It was fast paced with easy world building and will keep you turning the pages late into the night because you will not want to put it down! Huntyr is a fierce bad@ss FMC trained to kill vampyres her entire life. She is sent on a mission to go to the academy and earn her spot into The Golden City. Upon arrival, she is forced to room with the delicious fallen angel, Wolf, who is the only one who knows about her assassin identity. The romance, the plot twists, the secrets revealed, the battles, and the tantalizing training scenes had me hooked! And that ending…. I’m holding my breath in need to know hell! Read if you love: 🪽 Fae, Vampyres, Fallen Angels 🪽 Academy setting with magical trials 🪽 Forced proximity and slow burn 🪽 Rivals to lovers 🪽 Hidden identities and secrets 🪽 Tend your wounds “𝘖𝘧 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘦 𝘐 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘸𝘢𝘵𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘺𝘰𝘶. Excellent Rivals to Lovers!!
Format: Kindle
The tension and banter between Huntyr and Wold was delectable. I absolutely love the fallen angel and all of his flaws. Huntyr is amazing too being a badass FMC with some major trauma. The world building was great and I enjoyed the training aspect of the story. The writing was immersive and was in the story the whole time. The ending had quite a twist that I hadn’t anticipated and made my jaw DROP. Excellent job! I also loved the narration. Laura is one of my fave narrators!

Good start to a series
Format: Kindle
I delayed reading the series for reasons I don’t remember. But my TBR list is huge so I thought I’d take a shot of this and I was pleasantly surprised. I didn’t think the blurb about it was anything special. But it was a very good book. It took some interesting twists and turns. I am so glad the second book is already out. Because I would not have waited patiently. Very slow burn but good storyline. 🔥🔥/5
