Name change

Recently, the official name of this tropical plant was changed to Thaumatophyllum spruceanum variegata because this plant actually has a different way of growing than the Philodendron. Namely, this plant is not monophyletic like the Philodendron. 

Way of growing

Part of what makes the Thaumatophyllum different from the Philodendron is the fact that the plants drop a leaf each time, leaving a visible scar on the stem. This can make for an impressive appearance with this tropical plant when it is larger, as it then looks just like a small tree because of the woody trunk the plant will then exhibit.

Care

The care of this special houseplant is quite simple. It likes a well-draining soil and it likes a place in a lot of indirect sunlight. Be careful with the strength of the light. Let the soil dry out slightly between waterings and use room temperature rainwater to best care for the plant. Tap water can cause damage because it is not an optimal composition of minerals. It will do well in a living room with room temperature around 20 degrees Celsius and likes to have a humidity of around 60-80% with mild air movement (no drafts).
