🐘ELEPHANT EAR PLANT CARE🐘

High drama and bold texture are the signature benefits of showcasing elephant ears in a garden or container. Growing them is simple — they like filtered sun or shade and rich, moist soil. They're grown from tuberous rhizomes and can reach impressive sizes quickly.

Zones:

Fully hardy in Zones 10 to 11. Elephant ears will only truly thrive in warmer areas similar to their native humid climates of Southeast Asia, and with daytime temperatures of 70 to 85F, and nights no lower than 60F. They can be grown in cooler areas, but will need to be replanted each year.

Exposure:

Most prefer filtered sun or shade, but some tolerate full sun. In general, green types can take higher light levels; darker-leaved ones need more filtered light or shade.

Soil:

Elephant ears need rich soil that is moist (not saturated), but well-drained. Most don't like wet feet, though a few are tolerant of wet conditions—like the big-leaved colocasias you might see in water gardens. A general rule is big, green elephant ears are practically indestructible and can tolerate variable moisture conditions; dark-leaved types will suffer if over watered and can stay dry for several days.

Watering:

To prevent disease problems, water in the morning so they go into the night dry. If possible, water from below at the root zone rather than from above, to keep water off the leaves.

Fertlizer:

They're not heavy feeders. Apply a slow-release fertilizer at planting time, following package directions. If foliage shows yellowing, it’s probably a micronutrient deficiency. A fertilizer with micronutrients can be applied, or sprinkle Epsom salts around the base of each plant on a monthly basis.

Overwintering and cutting back:

In colder zones, the tuberous rhizomes can be dug up and stored over winter. In warmer areas, they can be left in the ground or in their pots.

  • For colder zones that receive frost or freezing temperatures:
    1. Cut back foliage to the ground once it turns brown, usually two to three days after a killing frost
    2. Dig up rhizomes
    3. Allow to dry for a few days
    4. Store in an open container with peat moss or dry potting soil barely covering the rhizome
    5. Keep them cool (45 to 55 degrees) and dry
  • For warmer areas, once the foliage turns brown, cut it back to the ground. Bulbs can stay in the ground or in their pots over winter. Protect from frost by covering the base of the plant with 4 to 12 inches of mulch.

The only balls that have lasted with my dogs.
Color: Orange, Size: Large
I own a Southern Black Mouth Cur and a Belgian Malinois. They have destroyed every other ball I purchased in a matter of minuets, except for these. I will not waste my money on any other brand!! Also come in large and small sizes, for at home backyard play or carrying in a pocket. Okay, so my dogs have now had these balls to play with for months and finally put tiny holes in both. The holes are so small you can't see them, but you can hear air escaping when they chew on them. One actually folded in on itself one time but I was able to pop it right back out, throw it again, and watch my happy aggressive chewer catch it on the first bounce. And they both still bounce well! These Chuck It balls are easy to find if left outside because of their bright orange color, rinse off easily with just water when muddy and grunge covered from outdoor play, or you can use any soap or cleaner you prefer without damaging them. Perfect for any dog, big or small - indoors or outside in the dirt. Love these!!

Won't go through "hurricane" or chain-link fencing - dogs LOVE it.
Color: Orange, Size: Large
We've been using this size (large) for about 2 years now. Between our Doberman pinscher and the boxer-pitbull mix, they are tough on toys. These dogs have access to the Chuckit Ultra balls only under supervision and they run like crazy in the backyard while either fetching or holding onto the balls. It keeps our doberman out of trouble because she's running with a ball in her mouth and therefor cannot nip at the other dog when she gets overly excited. Tennis balls are lucky to last one play session with these guys, just for comparison purposes. When throwing the regular size, the ball occasionally went right through our backyard (chain link aka "hurricane") fence -- even though they shouldn't quite fit. The size large balls bounce off the fence; our only problem now is when one of the dogs does a soccer style head-butt and knocks the ball over the fence that way. After 2 years, one ball has a split down the side and two are discolored because they were left outside when we couldn't locate them after a play session. Overall I like these very much and appreciate how well they've held up.

My dog and I love this!
Color: Orange, Size: Large
The balls are larger and fit the Chuck It with the larger ball size perfectly. The balls are hard rubber material and have stood up to continued chewing after our dog picks them up. They bounce and are really hard wearing. Great product for the price!

Durable but don't give this to them as an everyday chew toy.
Color: Orange, Size: Large
My Catahoula loves these things. Great for a training aid and to let them get their zoomies out but not durable enough for an idle chew toy.
