First cultivated over 3,500 years ago in Mexico and Central America, chia is a multipurpose plant that was a staple food for Mesoamerican cultures and used as a cash crop in Central Mexico as early as 1,500BCE. Chia was as widely cultivated as corn and beans, as it was an essential part of the diet during pre-Columbian times.

After the Spanish conquest in the 1500s, out of the four Aztec crops, chia and amaranth were associated with religion and were banned, replaced by wheat, barley and rice. Virtually non-existent for centuries, chia was sometimes cultivated by small farmers in the high mountains. It was only in the mid-1950s that South American governments began re-establishing chia as an important agricultural product.

Chia plants will take between 120 to 180 days to produce a new crop of seeds and are hardy in Canadian zones 8 and 9. Tolerant to drought and poor growing conditions, Chia seeds produce a slime to hold available water close to them, retaining as much as twelve times their weight in water. Chia seeds are extremely easy to germinate, and they are quick growing and low maintenance.

Mature plants grow to about 5 feet tall, so plan accordingly for them to not shade other smaller sun-loving plants in your garden. The flowering plants will produce tall spikes covered with purple blooms that turn into pods full of seeds that need to be harvested quickly. Chia has been widely popular in the past few years as ‘’chia pets’’ and were re-discovered as a ‘’super-food’’ and as an egg substitute for vegans. Chia can also be cultivated as a micro-green and are often used in soups, salads and sandwiches. The leaves, fresh or dried, can be made into a purifying and energizing tea.

GROWING INSTRUCTIONS

Native to Mexico and Guatemala, Salvia hispanica, commonly known as chia, is a member of the mint family. There’s much to adore about the annual herb. It grows aggressively with little care, producing pretty blue flowers on tall spikes that bear seeds packed with nutrition and health benefits. Chia thrives in warm climates but can be grown successfully indoors in colder regions, with newly developed cold hardy varieties becoming more available.

To get a head start on the season and ensure a crop of seeds in the fall, start seeds indoors early in the spring. Sprinkle the seeds on the surface of moist soil in a flat or pot and water well. Move the seeds to a bright location, under grow lights or near a sunny window. Thin the plants as they sprout and when they reach about 8 cm in height, harden them off and prepare to plant outdoors.

Plant chia in full sun when temperatures stay around 21 degrees consistently. Chia will feel at home planted in a sandy, well-drained soil. Keep seedlings moist until they’re established. At this point, chia will need little to no watering, as they are extremely drought tolerant. Chia will self-seed, sowing new potential plants at the end of every season.

In cold regions, chia may not have enough time to reach maturity. Fortunately, there are other ways to use the seed to take advantage of its amazing health properties. Chia can be eaten as sprouts and is also popularly grown as a microgreen. It’s quite easy to grow chia as a tasty and nutritious young plant.

Evenly sprinkle seeds over the surface of moist soil in your container of choice. Keep the seeds moist until they sprout and then bottom water the sprouts. Give the seedlings plenty of light and they’ll grow quickly. Microgreen chia will be ready to harvest within one to two weeks.

An excellent superfood is always at hand when you have access to chia seeds.

QUICK FACTS

- The word chia is derived from the Mayan word ‘’strength.’’ A tablespoon was said to be enough to sustain a runner for a whole day.

- Chia seeds will remain viable for 3 years if stored in a cool, dark place, ideally between 4 and 10⁰C. After that, the germination rate may start to go down.

Jarrow is a trusty brand, Magmind is superior for cognition, spatial relations and SLEEP QUALITY - UPDATED REVIEW
Flavor Name: Unflavored, Size: 90 Count (Pack of 1)
I have been using Jarrow Formula supplements for a number of years, especially the Vitamin B12 - methylcobalamin and Vitamin K2 - MK7 supplements. I have been impressed with their continuing development of new *effective* products at a great price point. My husband and I have been taking approximately a gram a day of supplement Magnesium (cheaper products) for almost 5 years now. In that time we have cured his former type 2 diabetes (after almost a 2 decade battle with medicated fasting BGs in the 500s at one point!) and we have almost completely reversed his hypertension of many years as well has have turned his end stage Severe Congestive Heart Failure around so he's relatively free of symptoms. I credit not only the magnesium, but also high doses of Vitamin D (ALWAYS taken with magnesium and fish oil!!), a whole foods source multi, the Sinatra Protocols for supplements as found in the back of and a number of minerals especially trace minerals as found in . I was looking into research on magnesium and the brain when I ran into the MIT study published in 2010 showing magnesium L-threonate is the only form of magnesium to cross the blood-brain barrier and showed observable improvements in cognitive measures. Interesting. So we bought a bottle at our local neighborhood nutrition shop after a discussion with the owner, a couple I have come to trust during our many battles with the medical establishment. Jarrow Formulas of magnesium L-threonate as Magmind is a very cost-effective source. To further economize we are still taking our regular magnesium supplement 3 times a day (750 mg) then taking this form of magnesium as part of our bed time routine (replacing the 4th magnesium of the day). I am genuinely impressed. Our sleep has improved yet another notch, which is saying something since the 5 years of magnesium supplementation meant we already had really good sleep quality. What I have noticed is that after multiple head trauma injuries (including a serious concussion earlier this year) my previously very high level of spatial relations was slipping. Now with Jarrow I feel I'm getting that edge back. I am very impressed. I will update again with further results after we've been taking this formula longer. 2015 UPDATE - in the years since we first tried MagMind I've referred hundreds of people to try this quality supplement with great results. We've since learned to couple magnesium with taurine for even greater results. Taurine is VERY well documented to improve the fluidity of electrolytes within the cells including within the brain. NOVEMBER 2016 UPDATE: Well, here we are 4 years later. We still personally use and recommend MagMind. What we discovered though, since he was put on Armour Thyroid by our primary care he no longer seems to be "leaking" magnesium hence we've cut magnesium supplementation waaayy back. Plus we soak in epsom salts far more. Magnesium is still vital however we're no longer "taking a gram a day."

Works like magnesium, not certain on brain benefits. I like the brand.
Flavor Name: Unflavored, Size: 90 Count (Pack of 1)
I take magnesium near-daily and have for some time due to my diet. Mostly it's glycinate, though sometimes I'll take some citrate. This is my first experiment with l-threonate. Before I get into this, I am not taking this as directed. I take 2 capsules during the day and usually take a different type of magnesium toward evening. I have about 40 capsules left, so I've taken a bit more than half the bottle so far. Supposedly magnesium l-threonate may give you brain benefits over other types of magnesium. If it does, I'm not sure. It seems to have the same, general magnesium benefits for relaxation, sleep, muscles and nerves, but I don't notice any clear indication that my brain is working better: I'm thinking clearer, faster or am sharper mentally. This could be happening to a small degree, but other changes I've made could lead to this as well, so the waters are muddy there. I'm going to cycle back to magnesium glycinate after I'm done with this bottle, or maybe open up my magnesium optimizer (also by Jarrow -- magnesium malate, b6, potassium and taurine), then come back to this again. See if there's any noticeable difference in my mental capabilities or focus. If I seem to see an association, I'll update this. I like the brand. I've used their Magnesium Optimizer before and was pleased with that (bought another bottle), their fulvic acid / shilajit -- that seemed to work. I'm a fan. This magnesium is more expensive than other types, but at present I'm not sure that extra cost is worth it over a different type of magnesium.

A MAJOR shift for Mg supplements! No side effects and got off ReMag. Best product for me in years!
Flavor Name: Unflavored, Size: 90 Count (Pack of 1)
The big issue with magnesium: we need it, yet for most of us it causes intolerable side effects. ReMag: I started on ReMag (a liquid Mg) years ago. Dr. Dean's book sold me on taking Mg and it's helped. I did try a Mg pill supplement then and sure enough, major abdominal pain. But with ReMag I was able to get off of Rx anti acid reflux medication. Her ReMag liquid worked great without pain. BUT it ended up being more inconvenient than I would ever have realized. It's hard to remember to slowly dose throughout the day (I had timers going) and you can't carry a drink to some places. Even worse, if I missed it, got too much at once, or didn't get enough in EVERY day, my body would let me know in bad ways. Jarrow: Finally Jarrow solved this and I can take magnesium pills without the huge inconveniences mentioned. I decided to try it out and was able to smoothly transfer over to Jarrow without much issue. And absolutely NO side effects like the typical abdominal pain of other products. I cannot recommend this product enough if you're looking for a magnesium supplement without side effects or like me you use ReMag but can't stand the the high maintenance of it. It is helpful to know that if your body is magnesium depleted, starting on Mg may cause weird side effects like an anxiety attack. It's not the fault of the Mg product, it's due to having too little Mg for too long and the body needs time to adjust to getting it. Vitamin D is the same way. And being on anti acid reflux medication results in low Mg & D. Dr. Dean's book thankfully explains all this.
