Philodendron sp. ‘Colombia’ is a striking creeping philodendron prized for its thick, quilted foliage and pronounced veining that gives each leaf a textured, almost sculpted appearance. Unlike climbing varieties, this plant grows horizontally along the soil surface via a crawling rhizome-like stem, gradually spreading and forming a dramatic ground hugging display that spills over the edge of pots. Native to Colombia and traded under an informal species name, it develops broad, deep green leaves with strong structure and presence. Best suited to wide pots where it can travel and expand, this is a collector’s foliage plant that offers architectural impact without needing vertical support.

Position & Light

Prefers bright indirect light. Can tolerate medium light but growth will slow and leaf size may reduce. Avoid harsh direct afternoon sun which can scorch foliage. In New Zealand homes, position near an east facing window or in a bright north facing room set back from direct sun.

Watering

Allow the top third of the potting mix to dry before watering. Keep evenly moist during active growth but never waterlogged. Reduce watering frequency in winter when growth slows. Ensure excellent drainage to protect the creeping rhizome from rot.

Humidity

Adapts well to average indoor humidity. Higher humidity will encourage stronger leaf development and reduce edge browning but is not essential for success.

Soil

Use a chunky, well draining aroid mix containing bark, perlite and quality indoor potting media. A shallow, wide pot is preferred over a deep narrow pot to allow horizontal growth.

Feeding

Feed monthly through spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength. Pause feeding during winter when growth slows.

Growth Habit

A terrestrial crawler that grows horizontally across the soil surface. New growth emerges along the creeping stem and will gradually travel beyond the original planting point. Repot into wider containers as it spreads.

Difficulty

Moderate. Best suited to growers who understand aroid watering balance and can provide bright light and well draining media.

Pet Safety

Toxic if ingested. Contains calcium oxalate crystals that may cause irritation to pets and humans.

Terrible product
These made my dog very sick. The chemical smell alone is too much. Should not be aloud for puppies to chew on .

Easy to destroy, better for dogs who are light on their toys
My dogs absolutely loved these right away, the squeaker grabbed their attention instantly, and they had a blast playing with them. That said, these are made of a pretty thin latex material, and my dogs immediately shredded them. They didn’t last long at all, so I’d definitely consider these more of a short-term or supervised toy rather than something durable. Because of that, I’d only recommend them if you have dogs that aren’t heavy chewers or that you know won’t try to swallow pieces. Otherwise, they can become a bit of a mess quickly. Overall, fun toys that dogs clearly enjoy, but not built for durability.

A Funny Lesson in Toy Durability
I actually have two very different reviews for these toys. First up was the Welsh Terrier, who weighs all of 8 pounds and absolutely destroyed the pink one. The squeaker was done in under five minutes, and the poor little toy lost its ears in less than three. So for some dogs, these may not last long at all. Now for review number two: my 45-pound Shar Pei is having an absolute blast with the blue and orange toys. He shakes them, pulls on them, squeaks them nonstop, and even tosses them around, and so far they are still in perfect shape after a few days of regular play. So in my experience, durability really seems to depend on the dog and probably which toy in the set they latch onto first. They are definitely fun, soft, and engaging squeaky toys, but if your dog is a determined little destroyer, just know they may not hold up for long. For my bigger pup, though, they have been a hit.

Good for a while
Pattern Name: Tug Rag
My GSD puppy, at 6 months made shredded leather out of this in a matter of weeks. Initially it was fine but if you spend more than an hour or two playing with your dog, chances are this toy will begin to tear.
