Curcuma aeruginosa ‘Indian Surprise’, commonly called Hidden Cone Ginger, is an eye-catching heat-loving ginger known for its broad, tropical-style foliage and distinctive cone-shaped flower spikes in shades of pink, white, and yellow. It flourishes in warm, humid climates, grows best in partial sun to partial shade, and is well-suited for USDA Zones 8 through 11. This compact summer plant is known for its colorful foliage and striking blooms. One or two of this rhizome works perfectly in a small space or container so that you can move it around for pops of color while entertaining.
Paired with Curcuma 'Pink Wonder', the two varieties complement each other beautifully—sharing similar growing needs while offering contrasting blooms and textures. Together, they create a lush, tropical display that feels both thoughtfully curated and naturally diverse.

What to expect: The foliage will begin to appear once the soil temperature is consistently about 65 degrees - May/June. The ornamental foliage will add depth to your garden for a couple of months while you wait for the flowers spikes to appear under the lance-shaped leaves that are 2-3 feet tall around late August/September. The blooms will continue peeking out from under the foliage for the next 4-6 weeks. As the days get shorter and cooler in October, the blooming will taper off. The foliage will begin yellowing and going dormant around November in zone 8 and 9. In the warmer zones of 10 and 11, the blooms will start as early as late June or July and last for 6-10 weeks with regular watering. There may not even be a period of dormancy especially if it is a warm winter and they are irrigated.

Planting Requirements - Sun and Water: These tropical rhizomes do best in well-drained soil that is kept moist by regular watering. Plant the rhizomes 2-4 inches deep in the ground or container. Prefers a semi-shady area. It does best with morning sun and then shade the rest of the day. This rhizome benefits from regular fertilization during the growing season as long as you continue to water it well. These will get 2-4 feet tall so plant each one about 2-3 feet apart. It prefers to be dry when dormant.
Curcuma aeruginosa ‘Indian Surprise’ is a stunning choice for container gardening, thriving both indoors and out. Even in cooler zones below 7b, where the growing season is shorter, its striking foliage makes it a valuable and eye-catching addition to any plant collection. You need to be sure to bring the pots indoors if the temperatures drop below 35 degrees.

Blooms and Foliage: This curcuma's leaves stand upright, adding a bold vertical element to your garden beds or containers around the patio or house. The lush foliage is a vibrant green with a marroon rib running the length of the leaf. The foliage begins around late May (earlier in zones 10 and 11) and lasts until the first frost. If you have it in a pot, you can bring it indoors to extend its life. If they are in the ground, you will want to mulch over the top of it well in zone 7 and possibly 8 (depending on the winter) just to protect it.

The blooms will begin to appear around late August and last for 4-6 weeks. Each flower spike emerges directly from the rhizome and rises up among the lush, banana-like leaves, often standing out as a bold, colorful feature in the landscape. The plant may send up multiple spikes in succession, each lasting 2–3 weeks. These vibrant spikes—featuring rich magentas, creamy whites, and sunny yellows—have snapdragon-like blossoms and may continue into September or even early October, depending on light and moisture. To extend the bloom season, keep the soil consistently moist (but not soggy), provide morning sun with afternoon shade, and fertilize monthly during the growing period.

Blooms in zones 10 and 11 may begin as early as June/July and last for 6-10 weeks.

Mulitplying: A single rhizome of curcuma can slowly develop into a large clump over a period of just a few growing seasons. After the plant goes dormant, the rhizomes begin to produce new growth. A healthy rhizome can produce several new "eyes' or shoots in a single growing season. If planted in the ground, you can expect to dig up your rhizomes every 2-4 years to divide. This encourages more vigorous growth and multiplication. Be sure to wait until the foliage has compeltely died back to dig them up and divide.

If you have yours in pots, plan on dividing the curcuma every 1-2 years. You will have lots to share with friends and family.

We planted a lot around the 4th of July. We don't expect blooms this year since we planted it late for blooms, but the foliage catches your eye and makes a dramatic display by itself as shown in the picture above. The foliage is taking in lots of nutrients for next year's blooms.

Animals: Bees and butterflies may occasionally visit curcuma especially if there a few nectar options available (which is often the case in the heat of the August/September in the South). Deer, squirrels, rabbits tend to avoid curcuma (though deer have been known to eat plastic floewrs). It is not toxic to your pets who are rarely interested in it either.

Planting Tips

  • Pink Wonder goes in the back because it can grow slightly taller (up to 4 feet) and has wide, upright foliage. It serves as a bold background
  • Indian Surprise sits in front of Pink Wonder for a layered look. Its slightly more compact size and different flower form contrast beautifully.

  • Front Row Companions:

    • Use caladiums or ferns for foliage interest.

    • Consider impatiens or torenia for low-growing, shade-tolerant flowers.

    • These help fill space before the Curcumas bloom and soften the garden edges.

Fantastic writing and non-stop action
Format: Kindle
This is a promising, fantastic beginning to what will be a 4-book series. Some readers may be content to read only the first 2 books, but I think you'll find that the story is so good that you'll want to keep reading books 3 and 4. Book 1 is about omega Elvana's introduction to the "Starling" brothers and their search for another missing person, Kelly. It's a bit of a rocky start, with deception and betrayal a key element. Hardly an auspicious beginning. Each member has their own path and purpose in the pack. Their interactions and the resulting narrative are so well-written that I found it difficult to put down. There is a cliffhanger that will have you reaching for book 2 as you finish, so make sure you have it on hand.

Fun read
Format: Kindle
I'm not really into mafia books but I love Roxy Collin's other series so I decided to give it a try. It had the same great romance, spice, swoon-worthy characters and exciting plot that are her signature. Arben was my favorite, although it was a bit sudden how quickly he changed from ignoring her to wanting to be pack. There were almost too many twists/layers of lies to keep track of but I'm looking forward to reading the other books. The only thing that detracted from the story for me was the need for a bit more proofreading. It was mentioned that Kelly is a female and male at different points, leading me to think she changed her mind at some point about the character's gender but didn't go back and edit it to align in all places. Like another reviewer pointed out, step siblings are different than half siblings. They are incorrectly referred to as step siblings because they (allegedly) share the same biological dad. There are a few other typos as well but those aren't a big deal.

Stepbrothers, Secrets, and Sizzling Heat
Format: Kindle
Twisted Lies by Roxy Collins is a wild ride through family secrets, amnesia, and a steamy stepbrother romance. When Kelly discovers her life is built on lies, she ends up tangled with three alpha stepbrothers and an assassin who once helped her through a heat. The tension? Off the charts! The heat is real, and the complications are messy in the best way. Full of twists, secrets, and fated mates? You'll be hooked from page one! Love omegaverse drama with a dash of taboo? This one's for you!

Good read
Format: Kindle
The book has some good twists and turns, but truthfully I was so confused on some things. It didn't have a good flow for me personally. Not sure if it's due to typos or using him/her wrongly, but I thought Kelly was both a guy and a girl. Actually I still don't know, and it made me incredibly frustrated. It would refer to Kelley as him or he, and then again in another part of the story as her she and sister. On to the next book, I hope there is some clarity and a smoother flow. This is a slow burn, and I just don't know how much I care for the Alphas yet. Idk if I recommend.

the lies
Format: Kindle
This is amazing fast pace read that is full of plot twists and lies that keep getting bad. This is a story we’re a omega has been lied to by her mother and finds out that someone is slowing dieing. 3 alpha take the omega and feed her more lies so they can use her against her father so they can find their mate Kelly. This is a dark read and ends in a cliffhanger and so good.
