Add a "Texas Native Superstar" to your garden with Turk’s Cap (Malvaviscus arboreus var. Drummondii), a versatile, spreading deciduous shrub prized for its unique, turban-like blooms and incredible wildlife value. Also known as Wax Mallow, Texas Mallow, or Mexican Apple, this plant features bright red, hibiscus-like flowers that never fully open; instead, their petals overlap to form a loose tube with a long staminal column protruding from the center.

Turk’s Cap is a rare garden gem that blooms prolifically in the shade, making it "especially useful" for bringing vibrant color to the difficult, darker corners of your landscape. Whether you are looking to attract a frenzy of hummingbirds or need a resilient hedge that can handle heat and drought, this plant is an "old-fashioned" southern favorite that delivers season after season.

Key Features:

  • Hummingbird & Butterfly Magnet: The nectar-rich, swirled red petals are a primary draw for hummingbirds, butterflies, moths, and other beneficial insects.
  • Prolific Shady Blooms: One of the few native shrubs that provides reliable, showy blooms from late spring through the first frost even in part-shade to full-shade.
  • Wildlife Powerhouse: Beyond nectar, the marble-sized red fruits provide essential food for birds and mammals.
  • Butterfly Host Plant: Serves as a vital larval host for the Turk’s-cap White-skipper and Glassy-winged Skipper.
  • Exceptional Resilience: Once established, it is highly heat and drought tolerant, adapting to a wide variety of soil types including sand, loam, clay, and limestone.
  • Edible & Useful: The fruit is edible raw or cooked—tasting somewhat like a "little apple"—and the flowers can be dried for herbal tea.
  • Pollinator-Safe: Grown non-GMO and free of harmful neonicotinoids, promoting a healthy ecosystem for pollinators and wildlife.

Available in sets of three, six, or 12 plants to establish a lush, red-turbaned retreat in your garden.

Why Choose Turk’s Cap?

Turk’s Cap is a "pass-along" plant with deep roots in Texas history, named for naturalist Thomas Drummond who extensively documented the region's flora. It is valued for its rapid growth and ability to form lush colonies that provide excellent cover for wildlife. While it can reach heights of 10 feet in the wild, it typically stays a manageable 2–3 feet in garden settings and responds exceptionally well to pruning, allowing you to maintain your desired shape.

Planting Tips:

  1. Location: Best in part-shade to shade, which keeps the large, heart-shaped leaves lush and green. It will adapt to full sun, though leaves may become smaller and darker. Thrives in moist, fertile, well-drained woodland soils but is adaptable to almost any soil type including heavy clay.
  2. Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish the root system; it is very drought-tolerant once mature.
  3. Maintenance: Prune back every couple of years to control size and encourage a bushier habit; it will continue to bloom even after being cut short.
  4. Spacing: Plants can form colonies via root division and self-seeding but are easy to contain by pulling unwanted new growth.

Great quality, hummingbird nectar all in one bottle!

I was so excited to get this hummingbird nectar because you don’t have to add anything to it at all. When I was reading the ingredients, it does have a preservative so that’s good as well. It won’t go bad on the birds. I love it. I saw my birds coming and going to this feeder all day. I highly recommend it.

Birds seem to love it!
Size: 16 Fl Oz (Pack of 2), Style: 16 Fl Oz Concentrate (Pack of 2)
I grew up using homemade hummingbird food dyed a bright red color with koolaid or food dye. But for the first time in my adult life, I'm somewhere that has a lot of hummingbirds and I wanted to provide them with the best juice possible. I decided on this juice because I like that it has hummingbird friendly electrolytes and is in a concentrate so I can make my own preferred dilution. I am in a very hot desert climate so I've been doing a 1-3/3.5 ratio to help keep them extra hydrated and the hummingbirds and bees are loving it. We have four feeders. Two closer to the ground and two on our second floor balcony. The birds and bees have been visiting all four regularly and our cats are loving the show. I swear my youngest cat gets most excited about the bees. I know the bees are seen as problematic for most but the birds don't seem to mind them sharing a few feeding holes and we don't mind feeding the bees too. The bees are probably more important for our ecosystem than the birds anyway. I took away one star because the seals on the bottles aren't very strong and both had leaked during transit, one was very messy and crusted with dried sugar. Since these are technically supposed to be refrigerated after opening I probably should have returned them but upon reading the ingredients, I don't see a reason that they would have gone bad without showing obvious signs of spoilage. It's basically gatorade for birds. I even took a sip to see if I died. I was fine so figured it's fine for the birds too. If the next order is also leaking I'll consider going elsewhere but for now we have happy birds, bees and cats.

They keep coming back for more ..........
Size: 64 Fl Oz (Pack of 1), Style: 64 oz Ready To Use
I've only been using this food for two weeks, but the hummingbirds love it so far. From what I've read, they are attracted to the color of the feeder more so than the smell of the nectar / food itself. With the amount of work that hummingbirds have to go through just to find enough food to survive, I figure it is worth the extra cost of this food compared to making plain sugar water that does not have the added minerals and electrolytes that this feed has to mimic real nectar.

I bought this same product last year for my hummingbirds and it brings them into the feeder. So, as of today I have already seen a steady increase in the hummingbirds. 💕
