Backhousia citriodora - Lemon Myrtle
Backhousia citriodora, commonly known as Lemon Myrtle, is an aromatic, evergreen tree or shrub prized for its fragrant, lemon-scented leaves and clusters of creamy white flowers that bloom in summer. Native to Australia, this versatile plant is celebrated for its culinary, medicinal, and ornamental uses. Reaching a height of 3–8 meters, Lemon Myrtle can be grown as a specimen tree, a screening shrub, or even pruned as a small hedge in both formal and natural gardens.
Minimum purchase of 3 x 200mm pots required. No Minimum for other pot sizes.
Position
Lemon Myrtle thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers warm, humid conditions. It is best suited to tropical and subtropical climates but can tolerate light frost once established. For cooler regions, it can be grown in a pot and brought indoors during winter. Lemon Myrtle does well in sheltered locations with protection from strong winds.
Growth
This moderate to fast-growing plant reaches a mature height of 3–8 meters with a spread of 2–4 meters. Its upright, bushy habit and aromatic foliage make it an excellent choice for screens, hedges, or as a feature plant in gardens and large containers.
Planting Guide
Backhousia citriodora grows best in well-drained, fertile soil with added organic matter. Plant in spring or early autumn, spacing plants about 2–3 meters apart for natural spread or closer for a dense hedge. For container planting, use a high-quality potting mix and position in a sunny spot. Water deeply after planting and apply a layer of mulch around the base to retain moisture and reduce weeds.
Plant Care
Water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist, especially during the warmer months. Lemon Myrtle benefits from occasional misting if grown indoors or in dry climates. Fertilise every 4–6 weeks during the growing season with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser to support healthy growth and leaf production. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and encourage bushier growth, and harvest leaves as needed for culinary use.
