About Philodendron sagittifolium

Philodendron sagittifolium, commonly known as the Arrowhead Philodendron, is a striking and distinctive species within the Philodendron genus. It is valued for its unique, arrow-shaped leaves and its adaptability as an indoor plant. Native to the tropical rainforests of South America, this plant offers both aesthetic appeal and ease of care.

Philodendron sagittifolium is characterized by its large, heart-shaped leaves that often have a pronounced, arrow-like shape at the tips. The leaves are typically a deep green with a glossy texture, and they can grow up to 60 cm (24 inches) long. The plant has a climbing or vining growth habit, making it suitable for use in hanging baskets, as a trailing plant, or with support for climbing.

Distinctive Arrow-Shaped Foliage: This Philodendron species is appreciated for its dramatic foliage and its relatively easy maintenance, making it a popular choice for both beginner and experienced indoor gardeners. The unique arrow-like leaf shape adds distinctive character to any indoor space.

Perfect for tropical and humid environments, Philodendron sagittifolium thrives as a houseplant and adds a touch of exotic elegance to indoor collections.

Cultivation Conditions

Light Requirements

Bright, Indirect Light: Philodendron sagittifolium prefers bright, indirect light. It can tolerate lower light conditions but will exhibit slower growth and less vibrant foliage in such conditions. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.

Temperature Range

Optimal Temperatures: This plant thrives in temperatures ranging from 18-27 °C (65-80 °F). It is best suited for USDA hardiness zones 10-11. Keep it away from cold drafts and temperatures below 10 °C (50 °F).

Soil Composition

Well-Draining Mix: Philodendron sagittifolium prefers a well-draining, rich potting mix. A blend of peat moss, perlite, and compost is ideal to provide the right balance of moisture retention and drainage.

Watering Schedule

Consistent Moisture: Water the plant regularly to keep the soil consistently moist, but avoid waterlogging. Allow the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings. Ensure the pot has good drainage to prevent root rot.

Planting and Care Guide

Container and Planting

Drainage Essential: Use a container with drainage holes to plant Philodendron sagittifolium. A high-quality potting mix that retains moisture while allowing excess water to drain is recommended.

Fertilization Program

Regular Feeding: Feed the plant with a balanced, liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce fertilization during the fall and winter when growth slows.

Maintenance Tasks

Regular Upkeep: Regular maintenance includes removing any dead or yellowing leaves and wiping the leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust. Monitor for pests such as spider mites or aphids and address any infestations promptly. Pruning can help maintain the plant's shape and encourage bushier growth.

Support and Growth

Climbing Support: Due to its vining growth habit, provide a moss pole or trellis support for vertical climbing growth, or allow it to trail naturally in hanging baskets.

Propagation Methods

Stem Cuttings Method

Water or Soil Propagation: Propagate Philodendron sagittifolium through stem cuttings. Take a healthy stem cutting with at least one node and a few leaves. Place the cutting in water or a potting mix and keep it in a warm, humid environment until roots develop. Water propagation typically shows results within 2-3 weeks.

Division Method

Dividing Mature Plants: For larger plants, propagation can also be done by dividing the root ball during repotting. Ensure each division has sufficient roots and leaves, then pot them up individually in appropriate containers with fresh potting mix.

Optimal Conditions for Rooting

Warm and Humid Environment: Maintain temperatures around 21-27°C (70-80°F) and high humidity levels (60-80%) for best propagation success. Keep the medium consistently moist but not waterlogged. Provide bright, indirect light during the rooting period.

They Saved the Best Material for Last
Format: Hardcover
The third and final Simpsons Treehouse of Horror Omnibus is here! Well, actually it debuted in August and I kept waiting on it to show up at my favorite comic book shop. But for one reason or another, the book never came. Once my guys determined that the distributors weren't going to fill the order request, I went to Amazon and ordered it myself. I hate not being able to support a local small business like that... 'Fiendish Fables of Devilish Delicacies' might be the best of the bunch. It features a bunch of celebrity writers taking horrifying shots at America's Favorite Family. Comedian Thomas Lennon and Rocker Rob Zombie are among those who contribute. But it was the re-pairing of 2 iconic teams from the pages of comic history that were my favorite out of all 3 volumes. Swamp Thing co-creators, Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson, join forces once again to pose a tale that suggests what might have happened if Homer was killed and put into a vat of Apu's Squishee mix to become the Squish Thing! Then Marv Wolfman and Gene Colan reunite to propose what would happen if Homer lead a team of vampire hunters against the dreaded Count Dracula. I must admit it took me a couple of pages to realize that this was a parody of Marvel's The Tomb of Dracula horror comic from the 70s and not a send-up of Universal's Dracula. However, once I did, I was enthralled because I cut my horror comic lovin' teeth on that series! Colan's artwork was so stunning. It looked 3-D. Artists today can barely make classic comic characters look 2-D. When you read that story, you are in the presence of genius. 2 geniuses! Speaking of bad art, there was one story called 'Boo-tleg' in which the Kwik-E-Mart is selling poisoned Halloween candy to the citizens of Springfield. To hide his crimes, Apu keeps making clones of the townsfolk. But the results are less than ideal. I get the premise of the story and I liked the satire of the effect cloning could have on society. Yet, the artwork looked like really poor computer animation. Like so bad, it makes the Dire Straits music video, 'Money For Nothing' look modern! One thing I had been missing were the covers. This book includes that much desired cover gallery. I still never got the Treehouse of Horror Halloween annuals printed in order; but at least I now have all of the material that would be included, if I owned the entire set. But there are lots of extras that only appeared in the trade collections. So that makes this a super-omnibus. Even with the near $150 I paid for all 3 volumes, I came out on top. Prices for some of those annuals are with price tags of $30-$50 each. No way in heck am I going shell out that type of money for a Simpsons floppy; no matter how much I love Halloween books! Now if only Harry N. Abrams would collect the Simpsons Winter Wingdings and other seasonal Holiday material in an omnibus or two... They saved the best material for last!
