The Anthurium pentaphyllum 'Costa Rica' variegata is a rare, variegated form of the hand-shaped climbers from Central America. With its striking cream and pale yellow variegation on fresh green, finger-shaped leaves, this plant is a botanical curiosity with strong visual impact. A must-have for lovers of rare variegata's who prefer natural, airy plant forms to heavy hybrid types.

Origin

Like the green form, this variegata selected from natural material sourced from Costa Rica, where Anthurium pentaphyllum occurs as a climbing species in tropical rainforests. However, the variegated variety is a rare mutation that has been stabilized by breeders through vegetative propagation. In the wild, this type of variegation is extremely rare and short-lived - in culture, this variegated form can be maintained if properly cared for.

Characteristics

The leaves are hand-shaped composed of five to sometimes seven partial leaves, which are oblong, narrow and glossy. What makes this variety special is the striking variegated markings: spots, stripes or even completely cream-colored segments scattered across the leaf fingers. Each leaf is unique - in some specimens the variegation is subtle and marbled, while others show exuberant color differences. As the plant ages, it develops a climbing growth habit with aerial roots that attach to support material.

Care

Light

Variegated forms need more light than the all-green variety. Provide bright, indirect light for optimal growth and color retention. Avoid direct sunlight, which can burn light areas.

Temperature

Between 18°C and 28°C. This tropical climber likes warmth, but must be protected from drafts and cold snap.

Substrate

Use an aerated, well-draining aroid substrate. A mix of coconut chips, fine tree bark, perlite and a small proportion of leaf compost is ideal. Roots should remain airy and not become soggy.

Humidity

Keep humidity between 65-85%. Dry air can cause damage to the white leaf areas. The plant does well in a greenhouse setup or when using a humidifier.

Nutrition

During the growing season, give a very light dose of aroids fertilizer every 4 to 6 weeks, preferably at lower nitrogen levels. Overfeeding can distort variegated leaves or suppress variegation.

Watering

Allow the substrate to dry slightly between waterings. Use demineralized water to prevent discoloration or leaf damage on light areas. Give small amounts more often than a lot at once.

Flowering

The inflorescence is subtle and botanical in nature: a narrow cob with a green bract. In this cultivar, however, the focus is clearly on the foliage.

Nice so far.

Comfy. They were tight the first day across the toes but as I've worn them a couple times they are loosening up. The sole is forming to my foot. These are very much like Doc Martin's from the early 2000s. Not sure about quality since I haven't had them for very long.

Not the best

They are cute but they have a bit of an odd fit that isn’t great for people with narrow feet. They look too dressy to wear with super casual outfits in my opinion. I think the Ugg golden star sandals are much comfier. If you’re wearing these sandals for a really short time they’d be okay. After wearing them around my house for a little while I decided to return them since they started to hurt my feet.
