Variegated African Milk Tree (Euphorbia trigona 'Variegata')

Variegated African Milk Tree is a striking, upright succulent that delivers bold structure and creamy variegation with a simple, low-water routine. Its columnar stems add instant height and a modern silhouette, making a single plant feel like a finished design element. In bright light, the variegation stays crisp and the plant maintains a strong, architectural shape. If you want an easy statement plant for a sunny room or warm patio, this one fits.

Distinctive Features

This euphorbia forms thick, three-sided, cactus-like stems with pale green to cream variegation and small paired spines along the ridges. New growth may show small, short-lived leaves near the tips, but the overall look is defined by the upright, branching, candelabra form. It can grow steadily over time and responds well to pruning if you want a shorter, fuller shape. Like other euphorbias, it produces a milky sap that can irritate skin and eyes, so careful handling matters.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Bright light to full sun, with best color in strong light and gradual acclimation to direct sun.
  • Soil: Fast-draining cactus or succulent mix, or gritty, well-drained soil in warm climates.
  • Water: Water thoroughly, then let the soil dry out well before watering again, and reduce watering in winter.
  • USDA Zones: 9 to 11.
  • Mature Size: About 4 to 6 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide indoors, potentially taller in frost-free climates.
  • Habit: Upright, columnar, branching succulent with a candelabra-like silhouette.

Ideal Uses

  • Floor Plant: Use as a vertical accent in bright rooms where its structure can anchor the space.
  • Patio Containers: Grow in pots outdoors during warm months for stronger growth and richer color.
  • Warm-Climate Landscapes: Plant in sharply drained beds as a drought-tolerant architectural accent where winters are mild.
  • Modern Styling: Pair with simple containers and mineral top dressing for a clean, sculptural presentation.
  • Focal Point: Place one plant in a minimalist pot so the variegated columns become the main design statement.
  • Low-Water Displays: Combine with other drought-tolerant plants in separate pots to keep care routines aligned.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Drainage: Always use a pot with drainage holes and avoid soil that stays wet.
  • Watering Rhythm: Avoid frequent small waterings and water only after the mix has dried well.
  • Pruning: Cut back tall stems to control height and encourage branching, letting cut surfaces dry before resuming normal watering.
  • Handling: Wear gloves and protect eyes when pruning, since the milky sap can be highly irritating.
  • Light Adjustment: Increase light gradually if growth stretches, and rotate the pot for even growth.
  • Cold Protection: Protect from frost and bring containers indoors when freezing temperatures are expected.

Why Choose Variegated African Milk Tree?

  • Architectural Form: Strong vertical lines create instant structure and a modern silhouette.
  • Crisp Variegation: Creamy striping adds high-contrast detail without looking busy.
  • Low Water Needs: Thick stems store moisture, making care forgiving when watering is not perfectly timed.
  • Container Friendly: Performs well in pots where drainage and placement are easy to control.
  • Easy To Shape: Responds well to pruning for height control and a fuller, branched look.
  • Heat Tolerant: Handles warm conditions well when soil stays sharply drained.

Variegated African Milk Tree performs best with strong light, sharp drainage, and patience between waterings. Keep it warm, avoid soggy soil, and handle it carefully when pruning, and it will reward you with a bold, sculptural presence that elevates any bright indoor space or warm-season patio display.

This is a great toy. I have a husky pit bull mix puppy that can chew anything. I swear that dog can chew the varnish off a furniture. He cannot chew this up.I highly recommend

Beloved But Beware Microplastic Chip-Offs
Color: Bacon
My doodle adores this thing and gnaws on it constantly. He has not been able to harm it, which is great. That’s the best part. Things to be aware of: 1. This is mostly molded plastic; it is a bit heavy and very hard. My dog tosses it into the air and if it lands on him, it HURTS. A lot. 2. While it’s sturdy, sharp teeth eventually gnaw pieces and little shavings off the toy. These are microplastics and could be harmful if your dog swallows them.

Skye's Absolute Favorite Ball! 🐾
Size: 1 Pack, Style: Ball
Hello, I am Skye! I am an Australian Mountain Doodle puppy, and my humans finally found a ball that can keep up with me! The Benebone Natural Rubber Dog Ball is officially my prized possession. Why I give it five paws: The Perfect Chew: It is made of natural rubber, which means it has this amazing, springy texture that feels so good on my teeth. It's super tough, but it still has a satisfying squish when I chomp down on it. Funky Bounces: Because of the rubber and the design, it doesn't just roll in a boring straight line. When it hits the floor, it bounces all over the place in crazy directions, which makes chasing it so exciting. Easy to Carry: The texture makes it really easy for me to grab with my paws and hold onto in my mouth, even when it gets a little slobbery during a long game of fetch.

So far this is the perfect alternative to other wobble toy feeders. Please make a bigger size!
Size: 1 Pack, Style: Pawbler
Why did you pick this product vs others?: I bought the Pawbler because the two most popular wobble treat feeders on the market are plastic, and one of my dogs just absolutely destroys those in no time because he bites them and throws them rather then nudging them and then he has plastic cutting him so I am forced to throw away a costly treat toy/dispenser. I thought maybe a rubber one would work out better. So far my dogs love it, it works well spitting out their kibble, seems to be holding up and is easy to clean and feels like a good weight, not a super flimsy toy. I would love to see it made in a slightly larger size, I think this current size is good for medium dogs. It holds just under a cup of small round kibble but I would like to see one that can hold more and is slightly larger in size. I have 4 german shorthaired pointers, my test subject for this toy is mostly my 70 pounder who bites the toys instead of nudging them and throws them across the room, so it is taking a beating. I think for him a larger size would be helpful in deterring that behavior but I also think this may be too small for larger breeds. Durability: So far this toy looks just like when I bought it. It has no punctures or scratches and unscrews without problem. We have only had it a week or so but we use puzzle/toy feeders to feed our dogs lunch every day so it is pretty easy to tell which toys won't last long. Obviously, I can't speak to long-term durability at the moment, but I can say that most toys similar to this end up already scratched or punctured in a few days, so this is already sturdier when compared to what I have tried before.
