Chlorophytum comosum 'Variegatum', also known as the Variegated Spider Plant, originates from South Africa. Its long, soft green leaves edged with creamy white cascade lightly and airily, creating a very decorative natural movement. Its stolons — long thin stems bearing plantlets — give the plant its characteristic spider-like silhouette. It is suitable for homes with pets, included in our selection of pet-safe indoor plants.

One of the easiest plants for city dwellers — resilient, quick to multiply, and adaptable to many locations.

Exposure & Location

Chlorophytum prefers bright indirect light but tolerates partial shade better than most variegated plants. The brighter the light, the sharper and more contrasted the white stripes become — in too dark a spot, the foliage loses its variegation and turns uniformly green. The balance of light and humidity is especially important to maintain the vibrancy of the variegation.

  • Exposure: bright indirect light to partial shade — avoid direct sun which burns the delicate leaves.
  • Location: shelf, high furniture, hanging spot, or bright windowsill.
  • Temperature: 15–27 °C, no cold drafts.
  • Humidity: tolerates dry indoor air but appreciates occasional gentle misting.

When hanging, the stolons trail freely and the characteristic spider silhouette fully reveals itself — this is the ideal spot to enjoy the full dynamic of this plant.

Watering & Care

Chlorophytum 'Variegatum' is very tolerant of missed waterings — its fleshy roots store water allowing it to endure dry periods without damage. Keep the substrate slightly moist but not soggy. Our guide on watering indoor plants explains how to adjust frequency by season.

  • Frequency: once a week in summer, every 2 weeks in winter.
  • Water: prefer non-calcareous or rested water — lime causes brown tips.
  • Care: remove dry leaves at the base and cut stolons if you want to limit spreading.
  • Propagation: take a shoot with roots and plant it directly in fresh substrate — as simple as described in our guide on plant propagation.

Brown leaf tips almost always indicate air that is too dry or water that is too calcareous — increase ambient humidity and switch to filtered or rested water.

Decor Ideas & Plant Combinations

The trailing green and white ribbon foliage of Chlorophytum creates a natural and airy movement that enlivens plant arrangements. Its lightness fits well in both contemporary and Bohemian interiors.

  • Hanging, place it in the white hanging pot Ø17 cm — the neutral white pot highlights the green and white ribbons of the trailing foliage, creating a light and bright composition for a kitchen or living room.
  • On a high shelf, set it in the white relief decorative pot Ø13.5 cm — the pot’s textured relief contrasts with the linear, trailing foliage for a graphic and natural ensemble.
  • For a hanging duo arrangement, pair it with an Epipremnum Golden Pothos — the heart-shaped green and yellow foliage of the Pothos contrasts with the variegated ribbons of the Chlorophytum for a very dynamic two-plant hanging display.
  • For a plant shelf, combine it with a Syngonium Maria — the pink and copper tones of the Syngonium warm the green and white of the Chlorophytum, two complementary silhouettes in a soft tropical style.

Verdeia Tips

  • Propagate easily by stolons: take a shoot already bearing roots at the end of a stolon and plant it directly in a small moist pot — it roots in a few weeks without any special treatment.
  • Use non-calcareous water: brown tips are almost always caused by lime or dry air — switch to filtered or rested water 24h before watering to keep foliage intact.
  • Repot as soon as roots overflow: Chlorophytum grows fast and has large fleshy roots — repot every 2 years in spring using a well-draining universal substrate with clay pebbles at the bottom.

Dogs love them, not long lasting
Size: Large
Our dogs ignored the toy for the first day or two, then immediately became obsessed, working on them for hours at a time. They did come with big cracks/splits in them. The first one it wasn’t a big deal, but the dogs pulled large slivers and chunks off the second within minutes of using it. Also, gigantic mess around the house, like letting them play with a stick. I plan to continue to buy since the dogs love them but I do think they are a bit expensive given the quality variations.

Durable, good value, clean, natural
Size: Small, Size: Small
I bought this coffee wood toy with the coconut rope for my heavy chewer (Jack Russell Terrier) a couple of years ago. I was pretty skeptical that it would last very long and be a toy that she would enjoy. This is one of her favorite toys, it's lasted for 2+ years, and it's not gross after so much use. This dog shredded everything in sight when she was a puppy, so it was important to find her lots of different hard toys. I bought another coffee wood toy with no rope, and she doesn't care for it as much. We might have to drill a hole and add a coconut rope when this one get's too small. I have not had an issue with the coconut fibers or wood pulp, though I'm sure she's ingesting some. I have had to take away many hard toys that she managed to chew off large bits or I felt like she was eating bits of plastic, but this one has been safe for her. She was already an adult dog when I got her this toy, so I cannot vouch for how it would work for a puppy, but I suspect that it would have been a toy that I would only let her have under supervision when she was a puppy. I like that it is made from natural materials.

Flimsy rope
Size: Large
This was definitely not sturdy enough for a large dog "up to 80 lbs" as stated. My 7 month old Shepherd puppy shredded the rope part in about 5 minutes. The chew stick is a hit but very small. Flimsy for the cost!

Fast Chew
Size: Medium
Didn’t last as long as I expected. My Frenchie chewed through it in record time. I will purchase another one to see if it’s the same as the one I received.

Great for chewers
Size: Large
I have bought these for the dogs (GSD/Husky/Golden) 4 mon-7yrs. All 4 dogs enjoy them and keeps the 2 puppies from chewing things they should not. Definitely worth the money for how long they have lasted as well. Have already ordered more.
