Origins and History

Yukina Savoy Chinese Cabbage is an heirloom Asian green with roots in Chinese and Japanese cultivation traditions. Unlike the tight-headed Napa cabbages of northern China, Yukina Savoy belongs to the leafy open-form group, combining qualities of tatsoi and spinach mustard. Its introduction to Western seed savers came through Asian-American growers preserving regional cultivars, and today it is valued both as a traditional cooking green and a cold-hardy garden staple in community and market gardens.

Appearance and Characteristics

This cabbage forms loose rosettes of deep green, savoyed (crinkled) leaves with thick white stems. The leaves are glossy and spoon-shaped, growing upright in mature plants. Unlike tight-heading cabbages, Yukina Savoy remains semi-open, which makes it less prone to rot in damp conditions. Plants reach 12–18 inches tall and are extremely tolerant of cold, often surviving light frosts and even overwintering in milder regions.

Culinary Uses

Yukina Savoy is prized for its versatility in the kitchen. Its tender young leaves can be eaten raw in salads, while mature leaves and stems shine in stir-fries, soups, and braised dishes. It has a mild mustard flavor—less pungent than mustard greens and sweeter than bok choy—making it a favorite substitute for spinach in Asian and fusion cuisines. The stems remain juicy when cooked, and the leaves absorb seasoning well, making it suitable for soy-based sauces, garlic sautés, and hotpots.

Growing Tips

Yukina Savoy thrives in cool-season conditions, making it ideal for spring and fall sowing. It grows well in USDA Zones 4–9, tolerating both light frost and brief heat. Seeds should be sown directly in the garden or started indoors and transplanted, at a depth of about ¼ inch (0.6 cm). Space plants 8–12 inches apart to allow rosettes to spread. The soil should be rich in organic matter and kept consistently moist for best growth. Mulching helps retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. This heirloom variety resists bolting better than some other Asian greens, extending the harvest window.

Harvesting Guidance

Harvest can begin as early as 30–40 days for baby leaves or 50–55 days for full-sized rosettes. Outer leaves can be cut for continual harvest, or the entire plant can be lifted once it reaches maturity. To extend productivity, gardeners often cut plants at the base, leaving the crown to resprout for a secondary harvest. For storage, leaves should be refrigerated soon after harvest and can keep for up to a week, though they are best enjoyed fresh for peak tenderness and flavor.

The trimmer works as described. It arrived as promised, it manicured my 80 ft linear ft in no time. I ran 2 passes because I hadn’t done it in decades.

Great edger
This is a great lightweight and portable edger. It’s much easier to use than a gasoline powered model. The only limiting factor is the length of the electric cord. It does a great job and make sure your driveways and sidewalk look manicured.

Awesome edger
This is our second purchase of this product. We had the first one for over ten years and we ended up breaking it(our fault). Immediately bought same one. This is a reliable machine. It goes right through thick weeds and rock hard dirt to edge a lawn or trench. Like I said our previous one lasted ten years and worked just as well in year ten never replaced the blade once. This one came with a back up blade as well which is a bonus. Highly recommend this. Easy to assemble. Takes five minutes. Durable. Powerful. There is hieght adjustment as well. Well worth the price!

Nice Edger as long as the blade doesn't come loose -- and it will come loose, repeatedly!
Probably could've/should've rated this 2 stars yet it works well when it works. I purchased this edger to edge my drive and sidewalks and not for trenching. The edger arrived very quickly after I ordered it (I am not a Prime member so this was a nice surprise). Assembly was easy and straight-forward. The first use went smoothly and the edger performed flawlessly and provided clean, smooth edging. About 20 minutes into the second use I noticed that the edger was cutting and quickly determined that the blade was spinning freely -- fortunately the hex nut was still attached to the threaded shaft. I reviewed the manual that came with the edger, grabbed the correct sized socket and torque wrench. I removed the hex nut, the first washer, the blade and then the second washer. To install I followed the directions ensuring that the flats of the washer aligned with the flat on the shaft and tightened the hex nut to the specified 140 in-lbs. The edger worked well for about 10 minutes and the blade once again became loose. This time I replaced the original blade (which did not need to be replaced from a wear perspective) with a new B&D blade and new washers. Once again I followed the instructions and this time the edger performed flawlessly until about 5 minutes remaining in my edging when once again the blade came loose. my experience has most certainly been frustrating to say the least. one should not need to carry a socket and torque wrench with them and repeatedly need to tighten the blade. So, when the edger performs as intended it does an excellent job at edging; however I have no confidence that this edger will be able to perform as intended throughout repeated uses and more importantly has shown that it cannot complete my edging without requiring tightening the blade (which requires disassembly down to the second keyed washer). Potential buyers should be prepared for this experience and make your decision accordingly. Note: I tried contacting black and decker via twitter (@blackdeckerhome) and never received a response; I could not find a separate customer service/support twitter account. Trying to contact customer service via the phone these days is an exercise in patience to say the least.
