The Speckled Brown Butterbean is a plump and creamy bean, with a mild earthy flavor that satisfies the soul on cold winter evenings or on any bright summer day. The beautiful tan bean, when mature, sports mocha colored streaks and freckles that melt into a smooth light brown bean when cooked. Speckled Brown Butterbeans are a traditional delicacy in much of the American South and nowhere more so than in Mississippi. In Mississippi these beans are generally cooked fresh shelled or fresh frozen usually with hamhock or other pork, butter, a chopped onion, garlic and salted when finished. For dried beans, pre-soak in cold water at least 4 hours. In our house, we substitute butter, olive or palm oil, and sweet smoked paprika for a delightful meal. Serve with cornbread or rice.

Our Speckled Brown Butterbeans are semi-runner beans (may benefit from a low trellis or pen), hardy to zone 7 and mature in 65-70 days. Plants set pods when day temperatures are reliably 85 degrees or more. Pole varieties take longer, between 80 to 100 days, depending on consistent hot days. The pods, grass green and thick, are similar in appearance to most Lima beans though they are smaller containing between three to four seeds that ripen from pale green to speckled brown.

This species is originally from South America, hence the name “Lima.” In much of the South, these beans are referred to generally as Butterbeans. Each cultural region of the South boasts it’s own favorite though in Mississippi the Speckled Brown reigns over all legumes. This variety, of unknown origins, has been grown and eaten in Mississippi since before God remembers. We received the seed stock in 2017 from Duck and Earl of Shaw, MS. Duck is the sister of Sankofa Farm friend and community elder Ms. Pearl Trotter.

Planting / harvesting notes

Plant in warm soil at least a couple weeks after the last danger of frost has passed. Sow directly in the ground at a depth of one inch, spaced every few inches in rows 12 inches apart. Thin to one plant every four to six inches.

Seed keeping notes

Lima beans are self-pollinating, though it is best to isolate different varieties of P. lunatus by at least 150 feet to avoid unwanted cross-pollination from flying insects. For seed saving, harvest the beans when their shells have become dried and crispy on the plants. Lay out the pods in a dry, sunny place to dry down further. Shell the beans and lay out the seeds in a well ventilated place away from direct sunlight for at least another few days to a week before storing for next year.

Nice, but easily chewed apart.
My dog loves it, but needs supervision because he can bit off bits. He's a small dog with little teeth.

JAYU PET Toothbrush Toy Dog Chew
The JAYU PET Toothbrush Toy Dog Chew is pretty cool. I used my toy poodle’s favorite toothpaste and he had a hard time really getting into the grooves. This seems like a good idea and it’s hit or miss with anything like this. My dog loved it more and tried harder when I used peanut butter. I just end up having to clean o it the grooves as he can’t get to it all. Big breeds might do better, but this is cute and could work.

Highly Recommend for Aggressive Chewers!
I recently purchased the JAYU PET Toothbrush Toy Dog Chew Toy, and it has exceeded my expectations. If you’re looking for dog chew toys that are both durable and functional, this is a great choice. My dog is an aggressive chewer, and this toy has held up extremely well without breaking or wearing down. What I love most is how it helps clean my dog’s teeth while chewing. The textured design removes plaque and tartar naturally during playtime. It’s much easier than brushing my dog’s teeth manually, and my dog actually enjoys using it. This dog dental toy is perfect for small and medium dogs and keeps them busy for long periods, which helps reduce boredom and destructive behavior. It’s sturdy, safe, and clearly designed with dental health in mind. Overall, this is one of the best dog chew toys I’ve purchased—durable, engaging, and great for maintaining my dog’s oral hygiene. I will definitely be buying another one!

Not for aggressive chewers
My 14 pound puppy chewed a big chunk out within 30 minutes. Would not recommend if you have a dog that likes to tear into things

Not for aggressive chewers as labeled; poor quality
Really disappointed in this item. My barely 16 lb., 1 1/2 yr old labradoodle chewed right thru the plastic in literally 6 seconds. I was going to toss it but at $18, the item should live up to its description-this toothbrush toy is rated 80% on the aggressive chew scale as per packaging…NOT AT ALL! She bit off a couple off chunks immediately, then proceeded to bite off the spikes…couldn’t believe how quickly the toy was destroyed & I took it away within moments of giving it to her.
