Philodendron Melanochrysum Care

The Philodendron melanochrysum plant care involves the use of a rich and well-draining soil that is high in organic matter. Provide the plant with bright indirect light and maintain a temperature of 70-80°F. Below is more information that will give you a head start in your Melano plant care journey.

Light

Similar to most Philodendrons, the Philodendron melanochrysum light requirements are dappled or partial sunlight – as they would often grow as an understory plant in their wild habitat. In an indoor setting, you may want to place the plant a few feet away from the window for them to receive just the right amount of light. If grown outside, you certainly want to let the plant receive some afternoon shade. Remember that full sun exposure hurts the plant’s foliage and may cause unpleasant discoloration. If you already have some experience in growing a tropical ornamental plant, you may not have any difficulty maintaining and meeting the Melano plant light needs.

Watering

There is no fixed time when it comes to Philodendron melanochrysum watering. The best way to ensure that you are not overdoing it is by checking first the soil with your index finger. You should feel that the top 2 to 3 inches of the soil are already dry. Ideally, it takes 7 to 8 days before you can water Melano plant.

The amount of sunlight and the prevailing season also influence your plant’s watering needs. You can increase watering when it is summer and decrease it during winter. In order to prevent the occurrence of root rot, use a pot with sufficient drainage along with an appropriate potting mix.

Temperature

The Philodendron melanochrysum temperature range lies between 70 to 80°F (21-27°C). With no efficient cold temperature tolerance, it is not recommended to let the plant sit at a temperature below 60°F for this can affect their foliage formation and overall growth. Consequently, the plant can be grown outside in USDA hardiness zones 9a to 11b. If grown indoors, exposure to cold draft must be avoided as it can still harm and cause injury to the plant. However, when an optimum temperature for Melano plant is properly observed, you can expect the plant to grow well and thus attain its full potential.

Humidity

Considering the wild habitat from which the plant originates, it is no doubt that the Philodendron melanochrysum humidity requirements are quite high. Hence, if you are tending to this plant, you must maintain a humidity level above 60%. Note that you should also make sure that the percent humidity will not go much higher than the optimum as this can increase the incidence of pests and diseases. Pro tip: You can attain the ideal humidity for Melano plant with occasional misting, but setting up a pebble tray proves to be more efficient and practical. You can do this by placing the plant above a tray filled with pebbles and water.

Soil

The best Philodendron melanochrysum soil consists of an airy mix of fresh garden soil, peat moss, perlite, and charcoal. An orchid bark may be added to improve texture and drainage. You can also purchase a commercial orchid mix and use it as soil for Melano plant. As previously mentioned, the key to avoiding overwatering is through the use of a well-draining soil mix. This will ensure that only sufficient moisture will adhere to the soil, preventing damage to the root system. Moreover, the reported ph level for Melano plant is between 5.5 to 6.0, which is quite acidic.

Fertilizer

Several reports indicate that the Philodendron melanochrysum fertilizer needs are critical in the first growth stage, or more precisely during the active growth period. Be sure to use a balanced fertilizer ratio such as NPK 20-20-20. Avoid using cheap fertilizer for Melano plant for this tends to accumulate in the soil over time, causing toxic accumulation of minerals such as iron and aluminum. Aside from chemical fertilizers, you can also use natural amendments to boost your plant’s growth, such as biochar and vermicasts.

Pro tip: A slow-release kind of fertilizer is most often preferred by home gardeners as they tend to be more efficient and beginner-friendly.

Potting & Repotting

Ideally, Philodendron melanochrysum repotting is done when it has become rootbound or if some of the roots are already coming out of the base of the plant. Depending on the plant’s growth rate and growing environment, repotting Melano plant may take a few years. Pro tip: Repotting is typically done in spring or summer as this enables the plant to easily adapt to the new environment. To do this, prepare a potting mix and a container that is at least twice the current pot size. Fill the pot with half of the soil and gently place the root ball in the center, fill in the remaining soil and water thoroughly.

Pruning

Philodendron melanochrysum pruning is often done only to trim off spent foliages and decaying plant parts. Hence, if you are growing it as climbing greenery, you don’t always have to prune the plant. When cutting Melano plant, be sure to always use sterile pruning shears or knives. Cut a few stems which are about 25 % of the plant starting from the older leaves and stem. This is a good practice to get rid of any infected parts while at the same time preventing its spread among other houseplants. Also, make it a habit to wipe the leaves of your Melano plant in order to retain its healthy look and vibrance.

Propagation

The most common and perhaps most practical way of doing Philodendron melanochrysum propagation is through the use of stem cuttings. Start by choosing a healthy stem with at least 2 to 3 small leaves and a leaf node. Cut off the stem from the mother plant using sterile scissors or a grafting knife. If you are to propagate Melano plant in water, you have to remove some of the leaves from the bottom of the cuttings but retain those at the top. Furthermore, if you wish to let the cuttings root in the soil, you can simply plant them. Either way, you should make sure that the newly propagated plants are receiving an ample amount of light. That way, roots can take form within 3 to 4 weeks.

Common Problems of Philodendron melanochrysum

Some of the Philodendron melanochrysum problems that you may encounter are pests and diseases, curling, drooping, and discoloration of the leaves. These, however, are easily managed with the appropriate cultural techniques. Such as observing the proper watering cycle, avoiding overfertilization, and maintaining the right temp and humidity. Should you encounter some problems with Melano plant, below are some ways to address them.

Love the material, very comfortable
I got the black in a size small, and the fit turned out perfect. It’s relaxed enough to actually move in comfortably, and looks really nice for a plain athletic shirt. The fabric is super soft right out of the package, and the tagless construction and flat seams mean there’s nothing scratchy or irritating even after wearing it for hours. The breathability and moisture wicking actually live up to its claims. It stays lightweight and cool in a way that cheaper workout tops just don’t, and the bamboo blend does seem to hold up surprisingly well on the odor resistance side of things too. The fabric is nice and stretchy while managing to not lose its shape as the day goes on, and so far the black has stayed vibrant through washing. My only slight hesitation is the price. While not bad by any means, $20 for a single athletic t-shirt is a little more than I’d typically spend. Having worn it a few times though, I think the quality ended up justifying it. Overall, if you’re looking for a workout top that actually delivers on its claims and holds up over time better than the cheaper versions, this one is worth the investment.

Great top for a heatwave
Color: Grey, Size: Large
We are in the midst of a heatwave in SoCal (95 degrees on St Patrick's Day, sheesh), and this tee really proved its claims today! I ordered it in gray, in anticipation of needing to deflect light, I just didn't think I'd need it this soon. At any rate, I love the coolmax plus bamboo plus vicose blend. I've learned to check the fabric of almost offering these days as somehow detestable synthetics (I won't say the P word, but it rhymes with Esther) because they trap heat, and the whole reason I'm buying summer clothing is to try to keep my body temperature on the cool side! At any rate, this lovely blend did help keep me cool and dry, and the curved hem is really flattering. You might not think that such a small detail would make much difference, but I find myself reaching for this for that reason alone! I ordered a Large, but likely shouldve gone with a Medium. It's a bit baggy but allows a lot of movement, so it's fine. I'm often between sizes and toss a coin pretty evenly split on which size I eventually settle on, so it literally is a real toss up. In the hope of helping someone else, I'm 5'5, about 145 lbs, 29 inch waist, and I wear a 34F/34DDD. I read another review that said that the shirt was too short, but I didn't find that to be true with mine. It fell to a flattering position, as in the photo, but maybe different colors have different sizing, as I've run into sometimes with major chains, and it's annoying. So take it with a grain of salt. I've already washed it and it doesn't shrink, nor did I expect it to.

Breathable and light
Color: White, Size: Small, Color: White, Size: Small
This shirt is truly better in person than in the stock photos. Its just a bit more of a textured athletic material in person that looks nicer on than a simple loose standard t shirt. The material does still sit semi loosely and only mildly hugs curves but its still figure complimenting and looks just a hair above only casual. Its very very breathable and lightweight, excellent for the gym or summer running etc but also serves as a phenomenal base layer for hiking and sports that carry into colder climates and seasons . Its well made and fots my size well so the size chart feels spot on. This shirt is really only losing points for me in the cost department because while its decent its nothing special. Its a good basic but its not something I couldnt find almost everywhere else.

Soft, slinky cooling tee without that synthetic feel
Color: Grey, Size: Medium, Color: Grey, Size: Medium
I ordered this bamboo viscose CoolMax t-shirt in gray, size medium because I wanted something lightweight and breathable for workouts and just being around the house when it is hot. The standout feature to me is the super soft and slinky feel it has without the overly cool wet feeling you get from other shirts made from synthetic “cooling fabric.” It feels smooth and comfortable against the skin while still doing a great job keeping me dry and not clingy. The fabric is lightweight with a nice stretch, and it moves easily without losing its shape. The fit is very flattering with a clean shoulder line and a curved hem that sits right at the hips, so it looks polished enough to wear out, not just for the gym. The seams are flat and smooth, and the tagless design makes it easy to wear all day without irritation. It also holds up well after washing with no shrinking or shape issues. For sizing reference, I am 5'6", 119 pounds, 34B, with a 28.5" waist, and the medium fits me exactly like the model in the main listing picture, exactly. That should really help with sizing decisions if your build is similar. Highly Recommended!

Lightweight and comfortable to wear.
Color: White, Size: Medium, Color: White, Size: Medium
I wanted something comfy, lightweight, breathable, durable, and cool to wear while working out. My old t-shirts leave a lot to be desired. This Bamboo Viscose Coolmax T-shirt meets all the above. The only downside for me is that I chose white, and the material is very thin and see-through. If you prefer to dress more modestly as I do, you’ll want to select a darker color. I planned to only wear it in the house or while sitting outside on the patio, so it’s okay. Comfort and breathability are important to me when the summer heat and humidity hit. The length and cut fit my physique and are comfortable to wear and move in. I got a medium, and it fits perfectly, which was really a nice surprise. Many tops tend to be too long or too tight in the hips. I’m 5’4” and 130 lbs. The top washes up nicely, but ended up with a few wrinkles. No big deal for me, though. Is it worth the price? I’d say it is based on the quality, fit, comfort, and breathability of the fabric. I’ve passed up buying similar tops when shopping because they were more expensive than this one. It’s a top to wear when working out, not for a night out on the town. It shouldn’t cost a fortune. At the time of this review, it’s on sale for $5.00 less, making it an even better bargain.
