Alocasia baginda 'Silver Dragon'

Pale silver-grey panels contrast with a darker network of veins, giving 'Silver Dragon' its sculpted look. Thick, shield-like leaves rise in a compact upright group.

Newly opened leaves are softer and less clearly defined, with the mature silver effect developing as each blade hardens. Pale panels and raised veins remain the main feature year-round.

Silver colour and raised leaf texture

Rounded, shield-like blades have a peltate attachment, silver-grey interveinal panels and dark green veins. Their mature bullate surface is firm and matte. A short rhizome carries a compact group of upright leaves. The species reaches around 25–30 cm, with blades approximately 10–18 × 7–12 cm, although cultivated plants vary. 'Silver Dragon' is paler and cooler-toned than 'Dragon Scale'.

Species origin, name and botanical background

At species level, Alocasia baginda is associated with Borneo, especially eastern Kalimantan, and warm, humid tropical conditions. It belongs to the Araceae family. The name Alocasia derives from a- and Colocasia, while baginda is an Indonesian honorific connected with royal address.

Silver Dragon Alocasia care guide

  • Light: Provide screened window light or softly filtered morning sun. Bright, gentle light keeps leaves firm and silver-grey panels clearer.
  • Watering: Allow the top layer and upper mix to dry before watering thoroughly. The short rhizome needs even moisture, followed by a pot that drains well again.
  • Substrate: Use bark, coarse mineral particles and a moisture-retentive base. The mix should hold some moisture while still staying open around the roots.
  • Temperature: Keep the plant warm during active growth. Cold windowsills and draughts slow root activity.
  • Humidity: Maintain moderate, steady humidity and avoid very dry room air. Steady humidity helps new leaves expand cleanly and reduces edge stress.
  • Potting: Keep the pot close to the active root mass and repot gradually. A large unused soil volume can remain wet below the roots.
  • Air movement: Gentle air circulation around the foliage and base helps leaves dry normally and keeps the growing area fresh.

Common Silver Dragon Alocasia problems and solutions

  • Dull or greener leaves: A blade lacking the expected silver contrast may still be hardening or may be receiving insufficient light. Allow it to mature, then review the light level.
  • Yellowing leaves: Several leaves yellowing while the pot remains wet can indicate root stress, cold substrate or poor aeration. Check the pot weight, roots and substrate structure.
  • Brown tips or margins: Dry or dark edges on the pale panels may result from uneven watering, low humidity or mineral salts. Stabilise moisture and review water and fertiliser build-up.
  • Drooping petioles: Upright petioles may lose their position because of thirst, heat, cold exposure or root decline. Check moisture below the surface and inspect the root zone.
  • Twisted or marked new leaves: Distorted or scarred emerging blades may indicate thrips or mites around the new growth. Inspect leaf backs, veins and petiole bases.
  • Soft rhizome tissue: Soft basal or rhizome tissue may indicate prolonged wetness and root decline. Keep only firm tissue and repot it into a fresh, airy mix.

Is Silver Dragon Alocasia toxic to people or pets?

Silver Dragon Alocasia contains irritating calcium oxalate crystals. If plant tissue is eaten, it can irritate the mouth. Keep it beyond the reach of pets and children, and use gloves when handling sap, roots or cut rhizome tissue.

Not invincible but good value
Color: 5pack, Size: Large
Great value for the money. We have 3 dogs and they are pretty strong chewers. They lasted a few months but ultimately succumbed to their inevitable doom. They arrived well packaged and with no unusual odors.

One of the best indestructible dog toys we've bought
Color: 5pack, Size: Large
So we adopted a pup in December and she tears up everything! I mean, Everything! My CPAP, garden hoses, trucks seat belt and backup camera wiring. Every single dog toy with stuffing, dismantle them in minutes. So many dog toys say they are are tear proof. nope! We have tons of stuffing all over our 5 acres. Hen m wife bought these. Beside the bones she bought, these are the only things she can't seem to destroy and she loves them!!!!

BEST Dog Toys EVER! JRT approved
Color: 5pack, Size: Large
🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 for these toys! We have terriers who have NEVER met a toy they couldn't destroy... until now. We've had them over a week an all 5 are still intact, crinkly, and squeakers squeaking - and they're played with constantly! When I tell you I've never, in all my years of JRT ownership and rescue, had a toy last 24 hours, much less a WEEK? Well, lots of you will know how astonishing that is! We've currently got 5 dogs (2 fosters, anyone looking for a project?) so the package size is perfect. Get 'em.

Best typy of toys for my pups. Love them. They last!! Chewing tug games. Love them. The squeakiest don’t come out ! Big plus’s. and don’t last long with my dogs, which for me is a big plus’s. Those squeakier drive me crazy!! If they get too yucky, toss them in the washer/dryer! Good to go again.

They’re cute and strong for a dog that likes to bite into toys. Not indestructible.
