Philodendron Gloriosum ‘Zebra’ – A Rare, Crawling Masterpiece

Some plants demand attention without even trying. The Philodendron Gloriosum ‘Zebra’ is one of them. With its velvety, deep green leaves traced with bold, silver veins, this plant doesn’t just sit in a corner—it owns the space. Unlike its climbing cousins, this ground-growing beauty slowly creeps forward, unfurling one jaw-dropping leaf at a time.

If you’re looking for a rare statement piece that brings a slice of the rainforest into your home, this is the one.

What Makes the Gloriosum ‘Zebra’ Different?

It Crawls, Not Climbs – Most Philodendrons are eager climbers, but the Gloriosum ‘Zebra’ prefers to stretch its rhizome (that thick, root-like stem) along the soil’s surface. This means it’s happiest in a wide, shallow pot, where it can naturally spread out.

Slow Growth, Stunning Payoff – If you love watching plants evolve, this one is fascinating. Each new leaf starts as a delicate, rolled-up scroll, gradually unfurling into a velvety masterpiece with even more defined variegation than the last. The process is slow—but that’s part of the magic.

Collector’s Status – The ‘Zebra’ variety is even rarer than the standard Gloriosum. Its exaggerated vein contrast and slightly elongated leaf shape set it apart. If you want a true collector’s piece, this is it.

A Living Work of Art – With its heart-shaped, velvety leaves that can grow over a foot wide, this plant brings immediate tropical elegance to any space. Its unique creeping growth habit makes it feel like a mini rainforest floor unfolding in your home.

How to Keep Your Philodendron Gloriosum ‘Zebra’ Thriving

This is a medium-maintenance but high-reward plant. Here’s what it needs:

Light

Bright, indirect light is best. Too much direct sunlight can scorch its delicate leaves, while too little will slow down its already slow growth.

Watering

It prefers consistently moist, but not soggy soil. The trick is to let the top inch of soil dry out before watering again. Overwatering = root rot, so make sure your pot has good drainage.

Humidity

This plant thrives in humidity—ideally 60% or higher. If your home is on the drier side, consider:

  • A humidifier
  • A pebble tray with water
  • Occasional misting (though not directly on the leaves to prevent fungal issues)

Soil & Potting

A well-draining, chunky mix is essential. Orchid bark, perlite, and peat moss make a great blend. Avoid dense potting soil—it can suffocate the roots.

Since this is a crawler, a wide, shallow pot (rather than a deep one) will let it spread naturally.

Is It Pet-Friendly?

Unfortunately, no. Like most Philodendrons, it’s toxic to pets and humans if ingested. If you have curious cats, dogs, or toddlers, keep this beauty out of reach.

Why You’ll Love Having One

Statement Piece – It’s a conversation starter. That deep green, velvety texture? Those bold veins? People will notice.

Picture-Worthy – If you love photographing your plants, the drama of each new leaf unfurling is pure plant-lover’s gold.

Slow, But Worth the Wait – There’s something rewarding about watching it develop at its own pace. It’s not a fast grower, but when it does push out a new leaf, it’s an event.

Perfect for Any Space – Whether on a shelf, plant stand, or low table, its crawling habit makes it a unique addition that won’t take over your space.

Realistic book of el Camino de Santiago
Format: Paperback
This is the most realistic and informative book I've read about el Camino de Santiago, (and I've read no less than 10 in my preparation to walk el Camino). It is beautifully written, inspirational, humble and encouraging. The reality of the albergues or refugios hit me, so I decided to book in private albergues or pensiones in advance. Thank you Joyce for opening our eyes about the hard parts of the Camino, but also of all the beauty and the transformative experience. I hope to savor some of what you and Tome did (minus the albergues), and to learn to appreciate every little thing that we take it for granted. Beautiful book! A must read for all who wants to walk The Way.

Real and Uninhibited
Format: Paperback
I’m planning to walk the Camino this fall and bought several books describing personal journeys. This book filled my soul with the author’s well-described authentic expression of her inner journey—the joys, the fears, the icks and the ahhhs. So honest, so inspiring, uninhibited and very real. Not a day-by-day account of a diary but rather the lessons lived and learned along The Way. Beautiful. I would love to give her a long and heart-felt hug for what I gained from her story. 💖

Practical Pilgrim Traveling
Format: Paperback
My wife and I earned a compostela walking a portion of the Camino Frances in May of 2004. Since then I've read many books on pilgrimage, including several accounts of other pilgrims' journeys on the same road we traveled. Many are what another reviewer describes: diaries of the interior lives of the author, focusing mainly on their hardships and triumphs, as if to point out how they changed the camino, rather than how they were changed by it. If I felt that this were all to this book, I wouldn't recommend it. Instead, I think this book provides a wonderful balance between soulful reflection and the pragmatism of the all-too-physical journey. Walking the camino does appear to have all the ingredients necessary for earning a 'spiritual experience merit badge', and some seem to walk it just to earn pilgrimage street cred. Even were that Rupp's intention, and I doubt very much that is the case, she's provided a great perspective for potential pilgrims and useful material to aid past walkers. It's true that she does not shy away from describing unpleasantries of the road: dirty accommodations, illness, rude pilgrims, bad food, and bad weather. These are very real likelihoods, and she discusses them very frankly; pilgrims do not float along the road, barely touching the earth, and any idyllic expectations soon come face-to-face with harsh reality. Rupp does not bring up these issues merely to complain, however; the benefit of this book is how she treats these subjects as well as her prayerful introspection as equally engaging points of reflection and provides a useful perspective on integrating even these issues into a larger pilgrimage experience. The subtitle of the book, however, is "Life Lessons from the Camino", and that's the true value of these observations: her effort in showing that much of our day-to-day life is filled with just these sort of experiences and just this sort of potential for reflection, appreciation, and understanding.
