The Bicolor Dragon tree, known as Dracaena marginata ‘Bicolor’) is a vibrant and easygoing tropical plant known for its sword-like foliage striped with shades of green and reddish-pink, making it a popular choice for modern indoor and outdoor plantings. With its upright growth, striking color contrast, and low-maintenance nature, it has become a favorite among homeowners, interior designers, and collectors looking to add tropical flair to spaces without the upkeep of more delicate species.

Commonly referred to as the Bicolor Dragon Tree or Bicolor Dracaena, this cultivar belongs to the broader Dracaena marginata species, also known as the Madagascar Dragon Tree. The "Bicolor" name comes from its dramatic two-toned leaves, which display a rich green center edged with pinkish-red or burgundy margins. Its variegation is more subtle than the ‘Tricolor’ or ‘Kiwi’ varieties, but still provides vivid color and a bold vertical accent in any setting.

Native to the island of Madagascar off the southeastern coast of Africa, Dracaena marginata grows naturally in warm, semi-arid forests.

Although the ‘Bicolor’ variant is a cultivated hybrid, it retains the species’ natural tolerance for drought, variable light conditions, and poor soils, making it especially resilient and adaptable to indoor conditions around the world.

This tropical evergreen features slender, upright canes topped with dense tufts of long, narrow leaves.

The foliage of the ‘Bicolor’ is what sets it apart—long, pointed blades with clean green centers and striking red-to-pink margins that glow under bright, indirect light.

Over time, the lower leaves naturally shed, leaving behind bare stems that resemble a miniature palm or cane tree, making it ideal for vertical appeal in tight spaces.

When grown indoors, the Bicolor Dragon Tree typically reaches 4 to 6 feet tall, but with time and care, it may grow taller.

Outdoors in tropical climates or when grown in containers and moved seasonally, it can reach up to 8 feet or more.

Its slow growth rate makes it manageable and easy to shape with light pruning. While flowering is rare indoors, mature plants may occasionally produce small clusters of fragrant white flowers in optimal conditions.

When it comes to Dracaena marginata ‘Bicolor’ care, it thrives in a well-drained  soil, opens in a new tab and prefers watering every 10–14 days during the growing season (spring to summer), allowing the top 1–2 inches of soil to dry out between waterings. In fall and winter, water only once every 2–3 weeks.

Indoors, it grows best in temperatures between 65°F and 80°F, with at least 6 hours of bright, indirect light daily.

Outdoors, it should be grown in USDA Zones 10–12, where it prefers partial shade or filtered sunlight to prevent leaf scorch.

Fertilize once a year during spring using a balanced liquid NPK fertilizer diluted to half strength.

Occasional pruning of yellowing or lower leaves helps maintain its clean form, and taller plants can be cut back to encourage bushier growth.

What makes the ‘Bicolor’ cultivar unique is its perfect balance of visual interest and resilience. Unlike many colorful houseplants that require precise humidity or specialized light, this Dragon Tree variant is remarkably forgiving. Its ability to tolerate missed waterings, low humidity, and low light makes it ideal for beginners, busy plant owners, or even office environments. Additionally, it's known for its air-purifying properties, helping reduce pollutants like formaldehyde and benzene in the indoor air.

Final Thoughts

Overall, the Bicolor Dragon Tree offers a compelling combination of bold color, architectural form, and worry-free care. Whether you're styling a minimalist room, refreshing your patio container garden, or just looking for a tough plant that looks good year-round, Dracaena marginata ‘Bicolor’ delivers. Its colorful edges and upright form add a tropical touch to any space while demanding very little in return.

best sleep aid I have found
Item Package Quantity: 1, Style: 240 Count (Pack of 1)
this is the best sleep aid I have found. This dissolves under the tongue, goes right into your system and I take two of them every night. They do not work like a sleeping pill and knock you out immediately--- they are natural and take longer plus I feel you need time to get them in your system and feel a difference. Therefore I did not expect immediate results. I have had insomnia for years so I took them for a couple of months when I started noticing the most effect. Now when I take them and let them dissolve under my tongue I know that in about 30 minutes or less I will start to feel drowsy and will naturally go to sleep. Over time I have felt my sleep has deepened and now I rarely awaken during the night. By the way, in the beginning of my search to solve my insomnia problem, I tried taking the melatonin pills that you just swallow but did not get the same results that I have gotten with these that I put under my tongue. Excellent company and excellent product.

Item Package Quantity: 1, Style: 120 Lozenges Tablets, Item Package Quantity: 1, Style: 120 Lozenges Tablets
Melatonin is produced in humans by the pineal gland. It's a favorite of travelers and helps support restful sleep. We take 1 lozenge at bedtime and let it dissolve. These are great tasting Orange Flavored Lozenges. We only use them at bedtime. And they're just for adults.

Melatonin is useful for sleep in many situations...
Item Package Quantity: 1, Style: 240 Count (Pack of 1)
I have a chronic insomnia problem and I find that melatonin helps. Keep in mind that it will not help if you have something seriously wrong with you such as a chronic pain problem that is keeping you awake. It's not strong enough to overcome that. But it does help with jet lag and it does help with some sleep conditions. You must use it correctly; unfortunately some physicians write that you only need the tiniest dose; others write that you need a higher dose. It is wise to follow a program for sleep hygiene: google "sleep hygiene" and you'll get some good results. I follow ALL of their suggestions and it has helped. The most important thing for me has been to block out light. I leave the lights on low starting at 6 PM. I take the melatonin at 8 PM, some take it earlier. There is no quick-fix for sleep problems but if you keep working at it and you're disciplined, you can find some relief. By the way, if you're not sleeping because of pain and other disturbing symptoms from fibromyalgia (I have it), you need to investigate The Guaifenesin Protocol developed by Dr. R. Paul St. Amand in Marina Del Rey, California. My life was a misery before I found this doctor and started his protocol. I was, in fact, bedridden. I have now regained my life. Source Naturals Melatonin is useful because it does not contain mint (which blocks guaifenesin) and the sublingual form is rapidly absorbed without being destroyed by stomach acid. It is not easy to find but Amazon has it and at the best price.

Simple. Effective. Good value
Item Package Quantity: 1, Style: 240 Count (Pack of 1)
So I prefer chewable that dissolve easily but these are have a slower process. The flavor is mild and pleasing. You can chew them but the texture is more like aspirin I let them melt away and within an hour or so get drowsy. I feel a clean effect from these the dosage 2.5 is good and I dream well with this product that for me is usually the test of how effective it is so A for this one!

Works well - how fast depends on the person taking it so timing when it's taken is important.
Item Package Quantity: 1, Style: 240 Count (Pack of 1)
This helps both of my kids get to sleep more easily at night. My oldest has ADHD and HAS to have melatonin to calm his mind enough to actually rest and sleep. My youngest who is 4 1/2 also needs a little help and always has. My cousins husband is a sleep scientist and I guess he has said that it's best to not give it any earlier than 1-2 hours before bed. However, I will say that for my oldest it takes about an hour to work so that is fine. For my youngest it takes only 15 minutes and then he is absolutely groggy and can't even finish dinner. So I HAVE to wait until 15 minutes before bed for my youngest. I will say that I notice my youngest gets a little cranky when he takes it but that could be just from pure exhaustion all of a sudden and the irritability for being so fatigued so quickly. Again, we just managed that by giving it to him only 15 minutes before its time for bed. Seems to work well.
