Aglaonema 'Cleopatra'

Aglaonema 'Cleopatra' is a named Chinese evergreen cultivar with variegated leaves and an upright clumping habit. Broad leaves rise on petioles from a short central base, forming a rounded plant in a pot.

Layered green tones and lighter markings spread across the blades as new leaves build the plant from within the clump. Warm, stable indoor conditions, indirect light and an airy, evenly moist mix keep the petioles firm and the roots oxygenated.

Aglaonema 'Cleopatra' layered green pattern

  • Leaf pattern: Variegated leaves show layered green tones with lighter markings across the blade.
  • Plant shape: Upright petioles hold the leaves above the pot and create a rounded clump.
  • Growth habit: New leaves emerge from the central base and keep the plant compact as it fills out.
  • Leaf hold: Short stems keep the leaf mass upright in the pot.
  • Indoor structure: The clump needs enough space for the petioles to open naturally.
  • Light sensitivity: Pale or coloured sections can mark in harsh sun, so filtered light matters.

Aglaonema 'Cleopatra' compact indoor structure

Aglaonema 'Cleopatra' grows from short stems with petioles that lift the leaves into a layered shape. Older leaves sit around the outer part of the plant while new leaves rise through the base.

A potting mix with air space is important around the compact root zone. Dense, wet substrate can damage roots before the leaves show clear symptoms, especially in cooler indoor positions.

Aglaonema 'Cleopatra' care indoors

  • Light: Give it filtered indirect light. Direct sun can scorch pale or coloured parts of the leaves.
  • Water: Water once the upper substrate has eased from wet to lightly dry. Constantly wet roots can trigger yellowing.
  • Substrate: Use an airy mix that holds some moisture but still drains freely around the roots.
  • Temperature: Keep it in a warm, stable position and away from cold windowsills.
  • Humidity: Moderate indoor humidity is usually enough, but very dry air can brown leaf edges.
  • Placement: Give the leaves room so they do not press against glass, walls or neighbouring plants.

Aglaonema 'Cleopatra' leaf and root signals

  • Leaf scorch: Pale or coloured areas can brown when exposed to direct sun.
  • Yellowing leaves: Persistent wet substrate is the first thing to check when lower leaves turn yellow.
  • Soft stems: Cold combined with wet roots can damage the base of the plant.
  • Brown tips: Dry air, mineral buildup or irregular watering can mark the leaf ends.
  • Weak growth: Very dim light can produce stretched petioles and smaller new leaves.

Aglaonema 'Cleopatra' safety

Aglaonema 'Cleopatra' contains calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin or eyes. Keep the plant away from pets and small children.

Aglaonema 'Cleopatra' genus note

Aglaonema is an aroid genus in Araceae, commonly grown as Chinese evergreen. The genus name comes from Greek roots meaning bright or clear and thread, a reference to the stamens in the flower structure.

A penetrating discussion of important books by Black authors.
Format: Kindle
Atcho’s choice of texts is smart: each has survived many decades in print, fascinates modern readers, and probes profound and current themes. Most are well known. Each one is worth your while to read or reread. Fiction, in particular, makes the Black experience in our country accessible to others. Living inside the head of Bigger Thomas (Native Son) offers a more personal understanding than any essay can. The church has always been part of the story, and Atcho does justice to this by examining African-American literature in a theological light. He is sensitive to what each text is saying on a spiritual level, discerning the subtext and bringing it to light. Over and over, as I read his analyses, I had the experience of seeing more clearly what I had only vaguely intuited. The readings he discusses are not one-dimensional or didactic, and I found having a Virgil at my side was invaluable. This book is a gift to us all.

Our church read this book together, and I can't recommend enough that your church do the same!
Format: Paperback
I am so grateful to Claude Atcho for inextricably weaving together a spacious reformed theology with the heights and depths of great African American literature. Thanks to his gracious, nuanced, and substantive guidance, I can no longer separate the two. For example, I will no longer be able to read the Exodus account of liberation without imagining Zora Neale Hurston's "Moses, Man of the Mountain." Where the themes of great African American literature (and indeed, great theology) do not short-cut suffering, death, lament, and evil, Atcho manages to do this heavy lifting in a way that welcomes uninitiated readers like me. Our church read this book together, and I can't recommend enough that your church do the same!

Eye-Opening and Heart-Expanding
Format: Paperback
I am incredibly grateful for this book. It gave me profound insight into essential truths of Christian faith and doctrine by allowing me to see them through a radically different lens than my internal lens. Plus, it opened me up enormously to the experience of black Americans who express the pain and challenge of life in our country thoughtfully and provocatively. I left this reading chastened, desiring more conversation, moved to listen better, and hoping to live differently.

Best book I've read in last 10 years!
Format: Paperback
I'm absolutely blown away. I finished the book this morning. I have been recommending it to anyone and everyone who asks me "So, what you reading?". I'm known for having a book stack a mile high. I ran out of my first yellow highlighter! Profound stuff. The subtitle, How African American Literature Can Make Our Faith More Whole and Just, doesn't do the book justice. It is soooo much more. I highly recommend!
