Planting / harvesting notes

Direct sow onto the soil’s surface in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked. For oil and seed space 6”-9” apart in rows 6”-9” apart, for fiber, sow heavily to discourage branching (about 3-4 inches apart). Do not cover with soil - flax seeds require sunlight to germinate. Water well after sowing. Harvest flax for fiber about 30 days after most of the plants have flowered, when the stems are beginning to turn yellow. Pull up the whole plant, including the roots, by hand so that you get the maximum length of fiber. Lay out stems on the ground to ret for 3 weeks, turning over half way through. The retting process breaks down the outer layer of stem and releases the fibers.

Seed keeping notes

For seed, harvest when pods are brown and you can hear the seeds rattle in their pods when shaken. Stems and leaves should be browning, but can still be tinged green. Harvest before plants lodge. Harvest by uprooting the whole plant, and tie in bundles to hang to dry for a couple additional weeks.

Can't wait for the next one!
Format: Paperback, Format: Paperback
My 9 year old loved the story and illustrations. She is hooked on this series and was thrilled to discover the graphic novel. She liked that there are new things to discover from the original Whatever After version of the story. Even though they are minor it was fun for her to catch the details.

So good!
Format: Paperback
This whole series of regular books is clever and wonderful; laugh out loud funny and inspiring. I only wish there were more graphic novels. This is a great place to start though.

Cute graphic novel version of the original Whatever After novel
Format: Paperback
I read this book after my daughter read it for our mom/daughter book club. We've read several of the Whatever After novel series, but my daughter really enjoys graphic novels, so she was excited to see they are converting the novels into graphic novels. This was my first graphic novel. Fairest of All was cute and followed the storyline of the original novel pretty well, with the pretty illustrations depicting the parts that would normally be written as exposition/narrative. I liked when Abby was telling Snow about the fairy tale she stars in and it would show a cloth backdrop behind them. It's also fun to see how Abby and Jonah (brother and sister) will fix the stories they accidentally mess up.
