Ferocactus schwarzii – Rare Barrel Cactus That Loses Its Spines with Age

Ferocactus schwarzii G.E. Linds. is a true collector’s cactus that defies expectations. While most Ferocactus are known for their fierce armament, this species slowly transforms into a nearly spineless, smooth-ribbed barrel as it matures. The result is a striking, deeply grooved green stem that can easily be mistaken for an Echinocactus at first glance. Its unusual growth habit makes it one of the more intriguing members of the genus.

Why Collectors Value Ferocactus schwarzii

  • Unique Trait: Spines diminish or disappear with age, leaving a nearly naked, sculptural cactus.
  • Growth Form: Solitary barrel, rarely offsetting, keeping a clean architectural look.
  • Size Potential: Mature plants may reach 80 cm in height and 50 cm in diameter.
  • Visual Impact: Deep grooves and bright green epidermis create a bold, textured appearance.

Where Ferocactus schwarzii Thrives in Nature

Endemic to Sinaloa, Mexico, this species grows on arid rocky hillsides under intense sunlight. Its slow pace and water-storing stem allow it to endure months of drought. In the wild it shares its habitat with other desert specialists, but few have such a dramatic change in appearance between juvenile and adult stages.

Growing Ferocactus schwarzii at Home

  • Light Needs: Full sun is essential; indoors, place directly at the brightest window.
  • Watering: Deep soak, then allow soil to fully dry; keep almost dry in winter.
  • Substrate: Use a mineral-heavy, fast-draining mix with plenty of grit and pumice.
  • Temperature Range: Withstands extreme heat; in winter protect from frost (minimum ~5 °C).
  • Nutrients: Apply diluted cactus fertilizer during active growth for stronger rib development.
  • Containers: A deep pot supports its strong taproot and stabilizes its heavy body.

What to Watch Out For in Cultivation

  • Overwatering: The main cause of failure; root or crown rot sets in quickly in soggy soil.
  • Light Deficiency: Without strong sun, plants elongate and lose their defined rib shape.
  • Pest Incidence: Rare, but mealybugs or scale may appear on stressed plants.

Why Ferocactus schwarzii Stands Apart

This cactus breaks the stereotype of the “fierce Ferocactus.” As the years pass, the heavy spines of youth recede, revealing a smooth, ribbed body that feels almost sculpted. For collectors, this unusual transformation makes Ferocactus schwarzii a conversation piece and a long-term investment in desert beauty.

Name Origin and Botanical Background

The genus name Ferocactus combines the Latin ferus (wild, fierce) with cactus, a nod to the typically spiny character of the group. The specific epithet schwarzii honors George Elmer Schwarz, a cactus enthusiast linked to its discovery and description. The species was first described by G.E. Lindsay in 1957.

Add Ferocactus schwarzii to Your Collection

For growers who enjoy cactus species with unusual traits and long-term rewards, Ferocactus schwarzii is a rare gem. Its transformation from spiny youth to nearly naked maturity makes it unlike any other barrel cactus. Order today to secure this fascinating desert species for your greenhouse or collection.

Pretty, comfortable bra; small issue with cup structure
Size: 44D, Color: Black, Size: 44D, Color: Black
This is the first underwire bra I’ve worn in about six years - I’ve been wearing sport bras, so I wasn’t sure I’d like it. This bra is pad free, lightweight, and made of very pretty lace. When I put it on, the underwire was not uncomfortable, and the bra itself fit relatively well. I was surprised that the band in the back was also comfortable, not digging into my skin. The bra is well-made with one exception. I think the top of the cup requires more structure. I feel that it’s a little too loose and the contents will fall out if I was to lean over too far or if I were to run or do anything slightly athletic. I like the bra - it’s comfortable and pretty but it has that one issue with the cup structure. I’ve decided that this would not be a good bra to wear all day, but because it is so pretty, I would wear it with evening wear only.

Seam shows right in the center of your brea$t!
Size: 38C, Color: Dark Pink
Had to return even though I loved the fit and feel of the bra. The seam that goes across the middle and your nippies shows through on every type of shirt I wear. And one side has a little extra room which made it ripple vertically I guess because the material/lace is so thin. Real bummer. Would be nice if B cup was available. C was just a little large.

This one is a keeper…
Size: 36D, Color: Nude
Bra shopping is truly one of my least favorite things to do, and it is always so frustrating to me. Online bra shopping tends to be even worse, so I had little hope for this bra but took a chance anyway. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked it! A true test for me is whether or not I notice I’m wearing it. I’ve worn it off and on for several days and I totally forget about it. Having nurses two babies and approaching my 40s, my girls need a lot of support and this bra delivered. I thankfully discovered years ago that if you have deflated mom boobs, an unlined cup is the best way to take what you have and give it shape. This one does just that. I have very mixed feelings on the lace though. On the one hand, it is sexy and feminine and I don’t find that in bras very much anymore (at least not ones that provide the kind of lift and support that I require). However, the lace is very noticeable through a shirt. I really can only wear this bra with a thick top or sweater. Otherwise, it’s just too noticeable and I’m not comfortable with that. Wearing a cami underneath a top helps slightly though. Overall, I’m glad I have this bra and I’ll be ordering another color. It feels well made, the material is nice, and it gives my bust a shapely (and youthful 😭) appearance. I wore it all day in 90+ heat at Magic Kingdom and it didn’t bother me at all, so it definitely qualifies as lightweight and comfortable in my book. I took a stab at a size and the 36D feels right. I *maybe* could have gotten a 34 but the 36 doesn’t feel loose on the tightest loops. On occasion, depending on the brand, I can be either a D or DD. I think this is worth trying and looks more expensive than it really is!
