Gymnocalycium horstii ssp. 'Spider Cactus' is a large and distinctive cactus with a green, ball-shaped body and minimal spines. More research is needed to determine if the latter should be elevated to its own species again. The stem of this cactus is smooth, shiny, and globoid, growing up to 20-25 cm in diameter. The ribs are rounded and somewhat acute, measuring 5-6 cm in width and deeply furrowed. The spines are sparse, usually only five in number and pointing in various directions. They are yellowish white, straight or slightly curved, and can reach up to 3 cm in length.
