Alocasia 'Stingray'

Alocasia macrorrhizos 'Stingray' is a cultivated form of Alocasia macrorrhizos with rounded, slightly cupped leaves and a long narrow tip. Each blade sits on a tall petiole and ends in a tail-like point.

This Alocasia grows tall petioles, broad leaves and a substantial rhizomatous base. In a bright, warm indoor position, it can become a large container plant with leaves rising well above the pot.

Tail-tipped macrorrhizos leaves

  • Botanical base: Cultivar of Alocasia macrorrhizos with an unusual blade form.
  • Leaves: Rounded, cupped blades with wavy margins.
  • Growth habit: Upright large Alocasia with tall petioles and a central rhizome.
  • Leaf shape: A long apical tip gives the blade its stingray-like outline.
  • Pot size: Give the plant enough space as the petioles lengthen.

Leaf form and mature scale

The rounded blade narrows into a clear end point, giving 'Stingray' its distinctive shape. Warm conditions support regular new leaves, and a stable pot helps balance the tall petioles.

During warm growth, regular watering helps the large leaves stay hydrated. Enough space around the plant protects fresh leaves from bending or rubbing before they harden.

Room for tall petioles

  • Light: Soft bright light keeps petioles sturdier and reduces leaning toward the window.
  • Watering: During warm active growth, keep the mix evenly moist. In lower light, let more of the substrate dry before watering again.
  • Substrate: Use a chunky fertile mix with bark, composted fibre, pumice or perlite so roots have air after watering.
  • Drainage: Keep the rhizome in an open, free-draining mix.
  • Temperature: Maintain about 18–30 °C during active growth, especially while new leaves are forming.
  • Humidity: Dry indoor air can mark soft new edges before the leaf hardens.
  • Feeding: If a well-rooted plant starts making smaller leaves, check the feeding routine.
  • Pot choice: Use a broad, stable container so the tall petioles stay balanced.
  • Repotting: Repot when the root ball becomes dense or watering runs straight through the pot.
  • Outdoor placement: Acclimate the plant gradually before any sheltered outdoor stay in warm weather.
  • Propagation: Divide established offsets or corms while the plant is actively growing. Keep divisions warm and lightly moist until new roots form.

Leaning petioles, yellow leaves and soft base

  • Long, leaning petioles: Increase light gradually and turn the pot so petioles grow more evenly.
  • Yellow lower leaves: Check watering rhythm, root space and temperature; older lower leaves may yellow as larger new leaves replace them.
  • Brown leaf edges: Look for dry substrate pockets, salt build-up or hot window exposure.
  • Soft rhizome base: Check the lower mix and roots for damage from cold, wet conditions.
  • Distorted new leaves: Check for pests and protect the emerging leaf from repeated rubbing or handling.

Give the petioles room to spread so new leaves can open freely. Turn the pot occasionally for a balanced shape.

Handling older leaves

Ingestion can irritate the mouth and stomach, and fresh sap may bother skin. Keep Alocasia macrorrhizos 'Stingray' away from pets and children, remove old leaves carefully and wash your hands after division.

Macrorrhizos name and stingray form

Alocasia macrorrhizos is the species behind 'Stingray'. The epithet macrorrhizos points to large roots or rhizomes; the cultivar name comes from the tail-tipped leaf shape.

COOL Pillowcases Worth Buying
Color: Champagne, Size: Queen
I bought these to try out, and I was shocked to find they worked out better than my silk pillowcases. I have atopic dermatitis, and I need a pillowcase that doesn't irritate my skin. I also am having hot flashes and need something cool on my face. These pillowcases are perfect for both my conditions. I plan to buy more in different colors. My sons and husband also like it since they are always hot.
