How to care for a Crassula Marnieriana 'Hottentot'

Watering Crassula Marnieriana 'Hottentot'

Crassula Marnieriana 'Hottentot' prefers a dry period between waterings. Water it on average every two weeks during spring and summer, and limit it to a maximum of once a month during fall and winter. Each time you water, ensure the water soaks through the potting mix and allows excess liquid to drain from the pot. This prevents root rot and you can learn more about moisture management for your plants through our blog post about root rot: https://deplantrekkers.com/blogs/nieuws/wat-moet-je-doen-bij-wortelrot-bij-je-kamerplanten?_pos=1&_sid=cd661bfb7&_ss=r

Light for Crassula Marnieriana 'Hottentot'

Crassula Marnieriana 'Hottentot' thrives in bright light and tolerates direct sunlight. Place it near a south- or west-facing window, but protect it from strong midday light if possible. Too little light can cause the leaves to wilt and the compact rosette pattern to spread out. Discover other sun-lovers, such as our collection of plants for sunny areas: https://deplantrekkers.com/collections/planten-voor-in-de-zon

Potting soil and fertilizer

Use an airy, well-draining potting soil specifically formulated for succulents and cacti. Consider adding perlite or Leca for extra airiness; these are available in our potting soil and accessories collection: https://deplantrekkers.com/collections/potgrond-en-toebehoren . Fertilize once a month during the growing season with a weak cactus and succulent food to encourage healthy growth.

Frequently occurring problems

Yellow leaves

If the leaves turn yellow, your Crassula Marnieriana 'Hottentot' is probably getting too much water or is too wet. Let the top layer of the potting mix dry out completely before watering again. Also check the drainage hole in the pot; good drainage prevents mold and root rot.

Plant drips

A succulent can drip when its leaves release excess moisture (guttation). This occurs primarily at night or in high humidity. Provide a well-ventilated location and reduce watering to minimize this natural phenomenon.

Plagues

Spider mites and mealybugs are the most common predators of succulents. Check the leaf axils regularly and, for a light infestation, use a mixture of water and mild dish soap or a specialized product such as sticky traps for fungus gnats: https://deplantrekkers.com/products/sticky-traps-tegen-rouwvliegjes .

Roots coming out of the bottom of the pot

When roots grow out from the bottom of the pot, it's time to repot your Crassula. Choose a slightly larger pot from our collection of flowerpots: https://deplantrekkers.com/collections/potten-voor-kamerplanten-kopen . Immediately refresh the potting soil to replenish the nutrients.

Brown edges on the leaves

Brown edges often result from too much direct sunlight or irregular watering. Move the plant to a location with slightly less intense sunlight and water it more frequently, in small doses. A humidifier or jungle mist spray can help create a more stable moisture balance: https://deplantrekkers.com/products/jungle-mist-spray?_pos=1&_psq=jun&_ss=e&_v=1

Awesome price for quality balls
Color: Four colors, Size: 5cm (ball only)
These balls are super bouncy and durable. My dog loves them and for the price these are totally worth it! I think they are as durable as nerf balls and equal in size, and much cheaper!

Rope comes out at the slightest force. Pointless tug toy!
Color: Four colors, Size: 6cm (with rope)
If your dog pulls on these (and why wouldn’t he?), the rope immediately comes out. Turns out they just fuse the ends of the nylon rope together, which is no match for a dog playing tug. Any dog, any level of pulling will dismantle these. We’ve managed to reinsert the rope to a couple of these and KNOT it, which gives you a shorter rope but a toy that can withstand some play. But if I had wanted a DIY toy, I’d have used the balls and rope I already own.

Not for super chewers!
Color: Four colors, Size: 5cm (with rope), Color: Four colors, Size: 5cm (with rope)
These rope ball toys arrived today. My poodle puppy loves rope ball toys and playing tug of war. These didn’t last 10 minutes. For context, she is 1 y.o., 30 lbs., is not teething & has her adult teeth. She did this on her own- we were not playing tug of war at the time the toy fell apart. At least there are 3 more in the package & when the rope is done, we’ll still have the balls to play with.
