Double Sunset mixed gaillardia is also known as Lorenziana mix. This is a unique and rare cultivar of blanket flower with double pointed petals. Colors range from white, yellow, orange, and red. It makes for a great cut flower option since the flowers bloom on top of long stems. Gaillardia is a hardy annual that is heat and drought tolerant once established. Butterflies love its large flat flowers and bees are attracted to its color.

Ideal Growing Conditions

Sun: Full Sun

Water: Allow the soil to dry out a little bit in-between watering. Established plants are drought tolerant. 

Fertilizer: Doesnt require a lot of fertilizer since this is a wildflower. Can give it some organic granular fertilizer every now and then to promote lush growth. 

When & How To Sow Seeds: Can direct sow after the last frost or start in pots 6-8 weeks before your last spring frost date. Sprinkle a few seeds over the soil surface, pat them down so they make contact, cover lightly with 1/4 inch of soil, and water them in. Plants get around 3FT wide and tall at maturity so space appropriately. 

Germination: 7-14 days

Days To Maturity: Usually starts blooming in 3 to 4 months from seed.

How & When To Harvest: Harvest blooms early in the morning for fresh cut flowers. Frequent harvesting and deadheading of spent flowers encourages more blooms. 

Common Diseases: Blanket flower is pretty resistant to diseases. Can get some powdery mildew in very wet conditions. Improve airflow by proper plant spacing. Spray with 1 cup of hydrogen peroxide per gallon of water to clean and disinfect.
