Pandanus pedunculatus - Screw Pine
Pandanus pedunculatus, commonly known as Screw Pine, is a striking tropical plant with a unique growth habit characterized by its stout, spirally arranged, sword-like leaves and aerial stilt roots. This hardy evergreen tree produces clusters of ornamental, pineapple-like fruit, adding to its visual appeal. Growing to a height of 4–10 meters, Pandanus is ideal for coastal gardens, tropical landscapes, or as a feature plant in larger spaces.
Position
Pandanus thrives in full sun to partial shade and performs best in well-drained, sandy soils. It is highly salt-tolerant, making it ideal for coastal and beachfront areas. This resilient plant is drought-tolerant once established and suitable for tropical, subtropical, and temperate climates.
Growth
This moderate-growing tree reaches a mature height of 4–10 meters with a spread of about 3–4 meters, forming a broad, rounded canopy. Its unique structure, bold foliage, and ornamental fruit make it an excellent choice for coastal gardens, tropical designs, or as a dramatic focal point in large landscapes.
Planting Guide
Pandanus pedunculatus grows best in well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Plant in year round, spacing trees at least 3–4 meters apart to allow for natural spreading. For container planting, use a high-quality potting mix, and position the container in a sunny or semi-shaded location. Water thoroughly after planting, and mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Plant Care
Water regularly during the establishment phase, then reduce watering, as Screw Pine is drought-tolerant once mature. Feed with a slow-release, balanced fertiliser in early spring to promote healthy growth and vibrant foliage. Prune any dead or damaged leaves as needed to maintain its tidy appearance. Mulching around the base helps retain soil moisture and regulate temperature, especially in hot climates.
