'Baby Jade' (Crassula ovata) is a versatile and resilient grower, thriving indoors as a potted plant or outdoors as a dense, mounding shrub. Its small, round leaves grow on thick branches and can develop a red tint at the edges when exposed to direct sunlight. Native to South Africa and Mozambique, it flourishes naturally on rocky slopes. This cultivar can reach a height of about 12 inches, though it can be kept compact and bonsai-sized with indoor growing, small pots, and regular pruning.
'Baby Jade' is an ideal plant for beginners due to its forgiving nature. It requires well-draining soil, plenty of sunlight, and protection from hard frost. Mature outdoor plants often become drought-tolerant, requiring little to no irrigation. You may notice that the plant shrinks during dry periods and swells when rehydrated.
