Comfrey (Symphytum officinale), also known as consuelda, knitbone, or boneseal, is a vigorous perennial herb prized for its many garden and traditional external uses. This fast-growing, deep-rooted plant thrives in a wide range of climates, producing large green leaves and bell-shaped flowers that attract bumblebees and other pollinators.

A favorite in regenerative and permaculture gardens, comfrey’s lush foliage makes an excellent compost activator or natural mulch, returning valuable nutrients to the soil. Its leaves are also used as nutrient-rich feed for chickens and other livestock, helping improve egg quality naturally.

Comfrey is valued in herbal traditions for topical preparations such as salves, poultices, and ointments that support healthy skin and recovery from minor scrapes. It is not recommended for internal use.

Resilient, Productive, and Beneficial to the Garden

  • Grows well in a variety of climates and soil types
  • Deep roots draw nutrients from the subsoil, enriching compost and mulch
  • Bell-shaped flowers attract pollinators and support biodiversity
  • Produces abundant leafy growth throughout the season

Why Gardeners Love Comfrey

  • Excellent for natural composting and green manure
  • Supports pollinator populations with nectar-rich blooms
  • Useful in herbal salves and external remedies
  • Hardy perennial that returns year after year

How to Grow

  • Plant comfrey in full sun to partial shade.
  • Space plants 2–3 feet apart to allow for mature growth.
  • Water regularly during establishment; once mature, comfrey is drought-tolerant.
  • Cut leaves several times per growing season for mulch or compost.

Harvest & Use

Harvest mature leaves before flowering for use in compost or external preparations. Dry leaves in a shaded, airy space for later use in salves or poultices. Always use comfrey externally only.

Surprisingly fun and informative- a good series!
Format: Paperback
Bought this and the Paris book for an 11 year old girl before a trip to those cities. Although I felt like some of the quiz activities seemed a little too easy for her, the book provided an incredible array of information (current, historical, cultural, cuisine etc) presented in an entertaining way. She seemed to enjoy the book before and during the trip. She likes to read, and enjoyed getting a preview and information about of some of the places and things they would see. Would buy another in the future if they plan to travel to somewhere else covered in the series.

Good book for children, an abundance of information
Format: Paperback
This book is ideally for children who will be traveling to London. It's very packed with information and places to visit, almost to an overwhelming way. The book starts with a fill-in section for children to fill out who's traveling and how they're getting there. It follows with some information and history of London, including a mention of Hamleys Toy Store (I wished they had put more about Hamley's in there -- it's one of the largest toy stores in the world!). It delves into how you could get around in London-- by Bus, Tube or Taxis. It continues with the array of tourist attractions that you can visit in London, starting with Buckingham Palace. The list includes the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, St. Paul's Cathedral, Tower Bridge, the Gherkin, the House of Parliament, and Trafalgar Square. It mentions the numerous theme parks, zoos and aquarium that you could visit. For children that enjoy a real scare, the book mentions the London Gundeon and London Bridge Experience, which could actually be too scary for children (there are actors there with mock-chainsaws that chase you!). Towers the end, it informs you about the London Eye -- essentially, a large version of a Ferris Wheel. I would say that this should go towards the beginning of the book because it should be one of the first things done to better see where everything lays out in the city. The book mentions shopping spots, including Oxford Street, Bond Street, Knightsbridge, Covent Garden, Carnaby Street, and Piccadilly. I had wished they mentioned the Camden Markets -- where there is great street food and you can bargain for your souvenirs. Camden was an essential part to my shopping list. The book also mentions the numerous museums and theaters that London have. It's impossible to mention all of them, but it hits the children-focused ones. The book tries to involve the children in the abundance of information it has. Like I said, it's almost overwhelming, but London itself is quite overwhelming. There's no way to be able to inform anyone of London without this much information, so this book is manageable and great for children. They could have focused a bit more on some items, but then they'd leave out other items. It did a good job trying to level out the fight of quantity vs quality amongst the tourist attractions mentioned. *** I have received this item at a discounted rate for my honest, detailed review. ***
