Declaration Lilac (Syringa x 'Declaration')

Declaration Lilac, Syringa x 'Declaration', is a bold hybrid lilac prized for its large reddish purple flower clusters and powerful spring fragrance on a substantial, upright shrub. Deep wine colored buds open to dense, richly colored panicles that show beautifully against clean green, heart shaped foliage. Blooming in mid spring, it brings classic lilac scent and strong color at eye level, turning paths, patios, and open windows into scented destinations. With its commanding flowers, sturdy framework, and traditional lilac character, Declaration Lilac quickly becomes a focal point you look forward to every season.

Distinctive Features

Declaration Lilac typically grows about 8 to 10 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide, forming an upright, multi stemmed shrub with a naturally rounded outline. The large, conical trusses are packed with single blooms in deep reddish purple tones that hold their color well in the landscape. Strong stems carry the flowers at the tips of the branches, creating a full, dramatic display that reads clearly from a distance and up close. Fresh green foliage emerges with the spring growth and remains attractive through summer, providing structure and a leafy backdrop for perennials and smaller shrubs after the bloom has finished.

Growing Conditions

  • Light: Thrives in full sun with at least 6 hours of direct light daily for heavy flowering, strong stems, and reliable bud set.
  • Soil: Prefers well drained, moderately fertile soil; performs best in neutral to slightly alkaline conditions but adapts to most average garden soils that do not stay wet.
  • Water: Water regularly during the first few seasons to establish a deep root system; once established, provide occasional deep soakings during extended dry periods rather than frequent light watering.
  • Hardiness: Well suited to regions with cold winters where lilacs traditionally perform, as long as drainage is good and buds are not exposed to severe freeze thaw swings.
  • Size: Forms a substantial shrub about 8 to 10 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide at maturity, depending on climate, soil, and pruning practices.
  • Growth Rate: Moderate grower that builds its main framework over several years, then settles into a dependable pattern of spring bloom and summer foliage.

Ideal Uses

  • Spring Feature Plant: Site near patios, decks, or front walks where you can enjoy the richly colored flower clusters and fragrance at close range.
  • Informal Screens and Hedges: Plant in a loose row or staggered grouping to create a seasonal privacy screen that flowers in spring and stays leafy through summer.
  • Mixed Shrub Borders: Combine with viburnums, hydrangeas, spireas, and evergreens to build layered borders with strong structure and changing color through the year.
  • Cottage and Pollinator Gardens: Pair with peonies, irises, roses, and traditional perennials where the spring blooms support bees and butterflies.
  • Cut Flower Gardens: Grow near cutting beds to harvest long, blossom filled stems that look dramatic in simple vases indoors.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Watering: After establishment, water during hot or very dry weather with deep, occasional soakings to keep roots hydrated without waterlogging the soil.
  • Pruning: Prune just after flowering by removing spent flower clusters and thinning out a few of the oldest stems at ground level to encourage vigorous new shoots and maintain a balanced shape.
  • Fertilizing: In early spring, apply a light dose of balanced, slow release fertilizer or a layer of compost if soil is lean; avoid heavy nitrogen that favors leafy growth over flowers.
  • Mulching: Maintain a 2 to 3 inch layer of organic mulch around the base to conserve moisture and moderate soil temperature, keeping mulch a few inches away from the main stems.
  • Seasonal Care: Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches in late winter or right after bloom, and monitor for suckers, choosing whether to keep them for a fuller clump or remove them to hold a narrower outline.

Why Choose Declaration Lilac?

  • Striking Bloom Color: Large, reddish purple flower clusters provide a bold alternative to standard lilac shades and stand out strongly in spring plantings.
  • Classic Lilac Fragrance: Strong, sweet perfume turns paths, patios, and open windows into richly scented spring experiences.
  • Substantial Garden Presence: Upright, rounded habit and clean green foliage offer lasting height, screening, and structure beyond the bloom season.
  • Excellent for Cutting: Long stems with full flower trusses are ideal for dramatic spring bouquets and indoor arrangements.
  • Reliable Focal Point: With good sun, drainage, and timely pruning, Declaration Lilac returns year after year as a dependable source of color, scent, and structure in sunny borders, informal screens, and traditional garden designs.

With its richly colored spring blooms, powerful fragrance, and substantial upright form, Declaration Lilac is an excellent choice for adding a standout spring focal point, fragrant cut flowers, and long lasting structure to sunny gardens and outdoor living spaces.

Solid piece
Size: Yellow
Border Collie loves it. Great for aggressive chewers. Prefers this to the carrot or the pineapple one. Probably better for large dogs than my medium size dog as there is some heft to it.

Great chew toy!
Size: Blue
Great chew toy that dogs love! The toy is hard but also soft for comfortable chewing. The plastic is lightweight and does not leave sticky residue. It is super easy to clean so won’t leave the toy smelling like stinky dog!

Truly Chew Proof (so far)
Size: Yellow
My dog loves this corn thing (he is 1 year old and roughly 50 lbs). He has gotten to be an aggressive chewer, but this has been one of the only toys that has kept up after long use (4 months since I bought it) and not been destroyed in minutes. There is a nice squeak to it, and I really have to press hard to get it going, but it is easy for him to do it. It is easy to clean, too, because it is rubber. My only comment is for owner awareness: the description says "good for teeth and keeps them clean". This is false. I believe no dog toy or kibble will "clean" their teeth. You, the owner, just have to keep up with their oral hygiene through brushing. As for the other claims -- the training, weight management, and preventing chewing furniture -- again, use your best judgment. I did not purchase the toy for those claims. But as a durable chew toy, this yellow corn does the job and satisfies the natural instinct to chew. Note: Some of the negative reviews for durability are for the alternative blue rubber bone, which I did not purchase.
