*Ark of Taste Heirloom*
(P. vulgaris) An heirloom from the Coupeville area of Central Whidbey Island in WA, it is named after the late 1800’s pioneer Elisha Rockwell, who brought it to the area. Though it never became a commercial crop, the bean has remained popular in homestead gardens for well over a century, renowned for its ability to germinate in cool soil, its early maturity, and its outstanding flavor. The beans are creamy-white with a mottled burgundy spot around the hilum and are great for most dishes, but are especially known for making terrific baked beans. We prefer it topped with good olive oil in which a few cloves of garlic and some rosemary have been marinating. Add salt, some fresh cherry tomatoes, and a handful of spinach or arugula, and you have a lovely meal!
Our seed stock came from the folks at Willowood Farm in Coupeville, who have been working to popularize this local treasure. A first-rate, productive dry bean for our maritime climate. Very rare and recently boarded on the Slowfood USA Ark.

Growing Info

SOWING:

Direct seed after the last frost date when the soil has warmed.

Note: Beans prefer well-drained, warm soil.

PLANTING DEPTH:

1"

SPACING:

3-5" between plants with 12-24" between rows*

*Pole beans require 5+' between rows.

EMERGENCE:

5-10 days @ soil temp 65-90F

LIGHT:

Full sun to part shade

FERTILITY:

Light to Moderate. Beans can produce their own usable nitrogen from atmospheric nitrogen through a symbiotic relationship with bacteria that colonize specialized nodules in their roots. Too much soil fertility can cause excessive vegetative growth at the expense of pod set and maturity.
Beans prefer well-drained warm soil with a pH between 6.0-7.0.

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

Beans prefer warm soils and may rot at lower temperatures. This is particularly true for white-seeded varieties. You love beans. Patience.

It can be quite beneficial to mix bean seeds with commercially available bacterial "inoculants" to encourage the beneficial symbiotic relationship in the growing plant's root nodules, especially if growing on ground that hasn't been planted with beans before. This can increase yields and improve plant health.

Avoid picking/weeding beans when the plants are wet. This will help prevent the spread of disease.

Provide a trellis for pole beans.

White-seeded varieties are more susceptible to rot when seeded in cool, wet, early-season conditions.

Sow Snap Beans every few weeks for continued harvests.

Harvest dry beans when the pods are brown and dry.

Great product, saved my hair
Honestly this is one of the best products I have ever used for my hair. I have been able to increase volume and thickness of my hair. The product is versatile and can be used in conjunction with other products as well. The application is very easy and I usually use any excess product on my skin for the added benefits. If you have fine hair your hair will get oily if you don't wash out so I just apply at night and wash out the next morning. Overall my hair is so much healthier and I am really happy I found this. Also I apply this 2-3 times per week overnight and wash in the AM. It will stain your pillow case so sleep with a bonnet or something with breathable material.

Love this batana oil over the other brands
This batana oil has natural ingredients and leaves my hair very moisturized. I have seen some hair growth after using this for a few weeks. So it's great value for my money. It does have a coffee scent but that doesn't bother me at all. I would definitely repurchase this again.

**UPDATE ON PDT*** Ingredients changed
Ok here’s my update (4/4/26) We loved it. It did what it was supposed to do in the beginning but now I stopped using the product. Ingredients must’ve changed. It’s now a darker color, it doesn’t dissolve like it did in the past, and worst part— my daughter’s hair started breaking off. It could just be her hair but I don’t want to take chances. The ingredients definitely changed. We are trying azure batana and will stick with it for 3 months to see results. But as of now their product looks like the real deal. It’s a shame because I like consistency. I’ll stick with one product for years. Oh well. Tossed this one out. (Pic 1-2 AFTER USING; Pic 3 BEFORE USING) Yes it works. It smells so if you’re sensitive to smells, you might only want to use it as a deep conditioner. Both my daughter & I are adjusted to the smell and love the results so we can easily prioritize our results over the less than fragrant odor. But the results!!! My daughter lost 40% of her hair a yr ago to severe scalp ezcema (+ a trip to St Martin’s beautiful yet salty water). We used other products with marginal success. I started using this product 2 months ago & I already see results. We use it twice weekly as a spot treatment along the crown & nape of her head, and deep condition with it twice monthly. Her locs are growing and more importantly, her edges and nape are recovering tremendously. We’re going to keep at it!! We like the texture (moist but not sticky), it leaves her locs moisturized but not weighed down. Her hair is drinking it up. Will repost after 2 more months.
