Cycas revoluta

Cycas revoluta is a slow-growing cycad with a stout trunk-like stem and a symmetrical crown of stiff, glossy, feathered leaves. It belongs to Cycadaceae, an ancient seed-plant family with cones, leathery fronds and leaf flushes separated by long pauses.

A settled plant may hold the same crown for a long time, then produce a new ring of soft pale green fronds that gradually harden and darken. This slow, crown-building habit makes Cycas revoluta a long-term container plant for bright interiors, conservatories and sheltered warm-season outdoor positions.

Cycas revoluta defining traits

  • Slow-growing cycad with a thick, woody stem and rounded crown
  • Glossy dark green pinnate leaves with narrow, recurved leaflets
  • Distinct leaf flushes followed by long periods of steady growth
  • Dioecious species, with male and female cones on separate mature plants
  • Highly toxic if ingested, especially risky around pets and children

Cycas revoluta origin and crown development

Cycas revoluta is native to Fujian in China, southern Japan and eastern Taiwan. In habitat and long-term cultivation, it forms a stout stem carrying a terminal rosette of leathery leaves. The leaflet margins roll back, a feature reflected in the species name.

Container-grown plants stay compact for many years because the species grows slowly. The roots need air, free drainage and mineral particles through the mix. Leaf flushes are energy-intensive, so stable light, even watering and a steady feeding rhythm during the warm growing season help the new crown harden evenly.

Cycas revoluta container care

  • Light: Give a very bright position indoors, with direct morning or late afternoon sun where possible. Acclimate gradually before summer placement outdoors.
  • Watering: Water deeply, then let the substrate dry well through the upper layer. The thick stem stores resources, while the roots need air around them.
  • Substrate: A gritty cycad-suitable mix with pumice, lava rock, coarse sand or similar mineral particles keeps the root zone open.
  • Drainage: Drainage holes are essential. Empty cachepots after watering so the lower roots stay oxygenated.
  • Temperature: Keep indoors above 10 °C. Warm conditions between 18–28 °C encourage stronger root activity and leaf development.
  • Humidity: Average indoor air suits Cycas revoluta. Gentle air movement around the crown helps leaves dry evenly after watering or cleaning.
  • Feeding: From spring to late summer, give balanced fertiliser at low strength. Magnesium and trace elements support good leaf colour in long-term pot culture.
  • Repotting: Shift into a slightly larger pot only after roots fill the container. Cycas revoluta grows slowly and benefits from stable root conditions.
  • Leaf care: Remove fully brown leaves at the base with clean tools. Let newly emerging fronds harden before handling nearby leaves.
  • Outdoor placement: Summer placement outdoors is possible in a warm, sheltered spot after gradual acclimation. Bring the plant indoors before cold nights return.
  • Propagation: Propagation is usually by seed or basal offsets, both slow. Offsets need clean separation, warmth and a short drying period before potting.
  • Mineral substrate: Cycas revoluta suits mineral-rich substrates with free drainage. Keep a clear wet-dry rhythm around the roots.

Cycas revoluta problem signals

  • Yellowing older leaves: Check root moisture, feeding history and light level. A few old leaves may decline after a new flush, while widespread yellowing needs a root check.
  • Soft trunk base: Usually linked to waterlogged substrate. Inspect roots immediately and move the plant into a drier, more open mix if the base stays firm enough to recover.
  • Weak new flush: Low light or irregular watering during leaf expansion can distort the crown. Keep conditions stable while new fronds harden.
  • Brown leaflet tips: Salt build-up, root stress or very dry heat can mark the ends. Flush the substrate occasionally and review fertiliser strength.
  • Scale insects: Check leaflet undersides and the crown base. Dense cycad foliage can hide scale before it becomes obvious.

Cycas revoluta holds its crown for long periods and adds new leaves in distinct flushes. Give the plant enough space around the pot so the stiff leaves can expand freely and avoid rubbing or bending.

Cycas revoluta toxicity and placement

Cycas revoluta is highly toxic if ingested. All parts should be treated as dangerous to pets and children, with seeds posing especially serious risk. The leaflets are stiff and can feel sharp at the tips, so use gloves when handling older plants or removing leaves.

Cycas revoluta ancient lineage and name

Cycas revoluta is an accepted species in the Cycadaceae family, first published by Thunberg in 1782. Cycas is linked to an old Greek name associated with palm-like plants. Revoluta means rolled back or curled back, referring to the recurved margins of the narrow leaflets.

Cycas revoluta develops a long-lived cycad crown with glossy feathered leaves and slow container growth.

Aesthetically pleasing to the eye

This product is a good organizer for the song it serves its purpose. However I wish the tray that catches the water would stay in place. It is constantly moving and doesn’t always tilt to allow the water to flow down properly. The quality of the basket is good. It is easy to keep clean. It was super easy to assemble did not require any special tools. So far so good it is withstanding being wet all the time and I do not see any rust or deterioration or fading of the color in the two months I’ve had it. This sink organizer is modern and adds a nice aesthetic to my kitchen.

Fits my needs
Color: Light blue, Color: Light blue
I purchased this specifically for the garbage disposal side of my kitchen sink. I only needed it to hold my sink stopper. I haven't used th basket yet, but will probably use it for a steel scrubber. It's a little on the small side, but it works great for me.

Fits the little spot we have in our kitchen very well. I tend to not measure and just hope for the best. Easy to clean and hasn't rusted yet. Does a good job of draining and letting things flow down
