Anthurium luxurians, also known as "Quilted Hearts," is an exotic and rare species of anthurium that has captured the attention of plant collectors due to its spectacular foliage and specific care requirements. It belongs to the Araceae family and was first described in 2005 by botanists Thomas B. Croat and Ricardo N. Cirino. Native to the humid tropical forests of Colombia and Ecuador, this epiphytic or terrestrial plant naturally grows in shaded environments along waterways, which explains its preference for humidity and diffused light.

Features

  • Leaves: The leaves are the main attraction of Anthurium luxurians. They are large (up to 58 cm long and 46 cm wide), heart-shaped or oval, with a "quilted" (wrinkled, padded) texture that gives them a three-dimensional, almost sculptural appearance. The leaf surface is glossy, with prominent veins resembling the facets of a cut diamond, reflecting light in a way that creates a metallic effect. The leaf color changes dramatically as they grow:
    • Young leaves appear in shades of pink, red, bronze, or chocolate brown.
    • At maturity, they become dark green with an iridescent shine, sometimes with bluish or nearly black hues.
    • The underside of the leaves is lighter, often lime green.
  • Stems and growth: The plant has short, thick stems with reddish highlights and a compact habit, usually reaching a height of 40-60 cm and a width of 25-50 cm indoors. Growth is slow but steady, making it suitable for limited spaces. It may have an upright or trailing growth habit, making it ideal for hanging baskets or stands.
  • Flowers: Although mainly grown for its foliage, Anthurium luxurians can produce inconspicuous inflorescences with a creamy white spathe and a green spadix. The flowers are not the main attraction, being less decorative than the leaves.

Care

Anthurium luxurians is an intermediate-level plant, requiring attention to detail but able to thrive with proper care. Here are the essential requirements:

  • Light: Prefers strong indirect light for 6-10 hours a day. It can tolerate lower light conditions, but the leaves lose intensity and shine. Direct sunlight can cause leaf burns. A spot about 1 meter from a window with filtered light or using thin curtains to diffuse the light is recommended.
  • Watering: The soil should be kept consistently moist but not soaked. Water when the top 5-7 cm of soil are dry, usually every 7-9 days depending on light and temperature conditions. Excess water can lead to root rot, while complete drying of the soil can cause leaf curling. Water should be at room temperature, preferably lime-free (e.g., rainwater).
  • Humidity: Requires high humidity, 60-80%, ideally 70%. In dry environments, leaves may develop dry or yellow edges. Using a humidifier, misting the leaves, or grouping with other tropical plants to increase local humidity is recommended.
  • Temperature: The optimal range is between 18-27°C, with a minimum of 15°C. Temperatures below 10°C can harm the plant, and exposure to cold drafts should be avoided.
  • Soil: Prefers a well-drained mix, possibly slightly acidic (pH 5.5-6.5), made of orchid bark, perlite, peat moss, or a special mix for aroids. Drainage is essential to prevent water accumulation.
  • Repotting and pruning: Needs repotting every 1-2 years into a pot 2-3 cm wider in diameter. Pruning is limited to removing discolored or damaged leaves to conserve the plant’s energy.

Uses and aesthetics

With its lush foliage, Anthurium Luxurians is a collector’s piece for lovers of exotic plants. It is ideal for indoor decoration, especially in spaces with filtered light such as living rooms, offices, or greenhouses. Due to its texture and colors, it adds a touch of tropical elegance and can be displayed in decorative pots, hanging baskets, or on stands to highlight its sculptural leaves. It is a plant that draws attention and admiration, often considered a "trophy" in aroid collections.

Height including pot: approx. 15-20 cm

Note: Plant with delicate foliage – leaves may show defects/damage.

Decorative pot not included in the price.
