Anthurium Panamense
A pendant strap-leaf anthurium described by Thomas Croat and native to the humid tropical forests of Panama and Costa Rica — placing it squarely in the Central American cloud forest understory habitat shared by several other highly regarded collector species including dressleri and papillilaminum, and giving it the warm, consistently moist growing conditions of that region as its baseline. A. panamense belongs to the informal pendant or strap-leaf anthurium group alongside pallidiflorum, vittarifolium, and warocqueanum — species defined by their long, narrow, gracefully hanging leaves rather than the broad cordate form of the velvet anthurium mainstream — but it occupies a distinctive position within that group as a species that is velvety in leaf texture, with soft contrast venation and a smooth leathery surface that gives it a presence somewhere between the purely glossy strap-leaf species and the full velvet cordate types. The leaves are long, lance-shaped, and pendulous, hanging with elegant weight from an epiphytic climbing stem, dark green with pale to soft-white venation that provides quiet but clearly visible contrast against the rich leaf surface. Among serious collectors it has earned a reputation as one of the more forgiving and adaptable pendant velvets in cultivation — faster-growing than warocqueanum and considerably more tolerant of typical indoor conditions, making it an excellent companion or entry point for collectors drawn to the pendant strap-leaf character who find warocqueanum temperamental. Its narrow, velvety form also makes it an excellent hybrid parent, contributing its graceful pendant leaf constitution and robustness to crosses with broader-leaved velvet species.
An elevated or hanging position is strongly preferred to allow the pendant leaves to hang freely to their full length without obstruction or folding. Provide bright to moderate indirect light — the velvet surface benefits from protection against direct harsh sun. Keep the medium consistently but lightly moist in a chunky, open epiphytic mix of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir with excellent drainage. High humidity of 60-80% supports the healthiest growth and best velvet quality. Maintain warm temperatures between 64-77°F. Toxic to humans and pets if ingested.
