Philodendron bipinnatifidum ‘Variegata’ is a rare and spectacular cultivar of the classic Tree Philodendron, belonging to the Araceae family. Native to South America, Philodendron bipinnatifidum (also known as Philodendron selloum or Lacy Tree Philodendron) is prized for its large, deeply lobed foliage and imposing growth habit. The variegated form elevates this tropical beauty to collector status.

The leaves are immense and dramatic, with each blade divided into deep, finger-like lobes. In the variegated form, splashes, streaks, and marbling of creamy white, pale yellow, or mint are scattered across the dark green surface, making each leaf completely unique. Mature plants can produce leaves over 1 metre long, creating a bold and sculptural presence.

Unlike many philodendrons, this species forms a thick, woody trunk as it matures, giving it a tree-like stature. In its natural environment, it can reach several metres tall, though as a houseplant it typically grows to 1.5–2 m. With its dramatic leaves and highly prized variegation, Philodendron bipinnatifidum ‘Variegata’ is a true centrepiece plant.

Philodendron bipinnatifidum ‘Variegata’ – Care Guide

Light

Requires bright, indirect light to maintain its variegation. It will tolerate medium light, but the white and cream marbling may fade. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, which can scorch the delicate variegated sections.

Watering

Water when the top 3–5 cm of soil feels dry. Keep the soil lightly moist during spring and summer, but ensure excellent drainage to prevent root rot. In winter, reduce watering frequency.

Temperature and Humidity

  • Temperature: Thrives in 18–28°C. Avoid draughts and protect from prolonged exposure below 15°C.

  • Humidity: Prefers high humidity (60%+). Mist regularly, place on a pebble tray, or use a humidifier to encourage lush growth.

Soil and Potting

Use a chunky, free-draining aroid mix – peat-free compost blended with orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir works well. Repot every 1–2 years in spring as the plant expands.

Feeding

Feed every 2–3 weeks during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Stop feeding in autumn and winter when growth slows.

Pruning and Training

Remove older, yellowing leaves at the base to maintain appearance. Mature plants may require staking for support. Prune lightly to control size if necessary.

Growth and Maturity

A vigorous and large-growing philodendron. Indoors, it typically reaches 1.5–2 metres in height, producing massive, lobed variegated leaves. With age, it develops a thick, woody trunk that adds to its tree-like character.

Common Issues

  • Loss of variegation: Caused by insufficient light.

  • Brown leaf edges: Often due to low humidity or underwatering.

  • Yellowing leaves: Usually linked to overwatering or poor drainage.

  • Pests: May occasionally attract mealybugs, scale, or spider mites.

Background and Benefits

Philodendron bipinnatifidum has long been admired as a bold, architectural houseplant. The variegated cultivar adds rarity and sophistication, with each leaf displaying its own unique marbled pattern. Like other philodendrons, it also improves indoor air quality, making it both decorative and beneficial.

Finally a ball my power chewers cannot destroy
Size: Medium
I have two dogs, an American Bully and an American Pit Bull Terrier, and both of them love to chew. Most balls last a very short time around here before they are shredded or missing big chunks. This one has actually held up. They chase it, tug on it and sit and chew on it, and it is still in one piece with no pieces breaking off. One of my favorite things is being able to put food inside. I add some kibble or small snacks, and they will happily sit and work on it for a long time. It keeps them busy, gives them something safe to chew, and they get a little reward while they play. When they are done, I just rinse it out and it is ready to go again. If you have strong jawed dogs that usually destroy toys, this ball is worth trying. Mine really enjoy it and I feel better knowing they finally have a ball that can keep up with them.

My dog LOVES this ball
Size: Medium, Size: Medium
Does your dog destroy tennis balls in seconds? Yes? Then your dog NEEDS this ball! It's squishy like a tennis ball, fits in ball launchers (even the cheap ones) and bounces when it hits the ground. My dog has been literally playing with this ball all day and not a single mark on it! The only bad thing is that it does not float. Definitely worth the money! Put it in your cart!

Perfect for ball demolishers
Size: Medium
The dogs love the chuck it brand. I don’t know what it’s made of but they go crazy over them. Will not play with another ball. Wonder if it’s “laced” with an addictive scent. Have pits. Very durable. Not able to chew to pieces. Last for about 6 months before there is a small break. I keep a back up because when the ball goes missing the house is in chaos. 😆 🤪

Chuckit medium rebound balls
Size: Medium
My 8 month old German shepherd dog loves these balls. They are easy to throw, they bounce great, they are very chewable! She keeps one in her mouth most of the time. It satisfies her need to chew and she does not chew other things. She drops it in the water and lets the hole fill up and drinks that way. The only problem that has caused is suction in her mouth and difficulty in dislodging it for her. However, she would be lost without it!
