This is one of the most striking plants, with the bizzare "elephant ear" shaped leaves emerging at all angles. The dark, glossy green leaves are complemented by the lighter green veins running through them. 

One of many alocasia species, these have particularly large leaves on the smaller plants. 

These really are "middle of the ground" plants. They won't tolerate direct sunlight, in fact it can be detrimental to the leaves, and you might see browning and curling as a result. They're also not great in particularly low light levels, and you'll find they will stretch and lean to find light. A fairly bright, indirect light source is ideal.   

The Alocasia amazonica x polly like humid conditions, and they make ideal kitchen and bathroom plants. Ensure the soil doesn't fully dry out, and give the whole plant - leaves included - a misting once a week or so.  

These plants will rarely exceed 50-60cm or so, although in captivity you would normally expect them to reach around 30-40cm high.
