Latin Name: Caragana arborescens

DESCRIPTION

Family: Leguminosae

Native Range: Europe and Asia

Seed Source: Seed production orchard near Indian Head Saskatchewan

Height and Spread (25 years): 6m x 3m

Overview: An introduced shrub growing to six meters high. The 'Ross' seed strain was selected for its outstanding cold and drought hardiness. First introduced to Canada in the late 1800s, it became the number one species in western Canada planted for soil erosion control. It is a legume and fixes nitrogen. The 'Ross' seed strain is named in honour of Norman MacKenzie Ross who pioneered shelterbelt tree planting in the Canadian Prairies.

Caragana is an extremely hardy and vigorous shrub that is well adapted to the prairies. This seed strain was first introduced from Russia by Mennonite settlers to Manitoba in the late 1800s. From then on it has been the widely used for shelterbelt planting across the entire prairie region.

Caragana belongs to the legume family and fixes its own nitrogen. This means it will grow equally well in low nutrient and fertile soils. Under prairie conditions and with good care, ‘Ross’ caragana can reach a height of six meters (18 feet) in about 10 years.

Caragana is meant to be used in the southern prairies where moisture and soil conditions limit the variety of shrub species that grow well. It should never be planted in or near a forest environment, once established in the forest it can spread quickly and be difficult to control or eradicate.

Fruit: Dark brown linear pods 3 to 5 cm long.

Average number of seeds/packet: 300

SEED TREATMENT / SOWING

Stratification: Soak seeds for 24 hours in water at room temperature.

Ideal sowing time: Spring

Sowing instructions: Sow 2 cm deep, 50 seeds/meter; Greenhouse - sow 3 seeds per cell.

Prior to sowing, soak the seed for about two days in fresh water at room temperature (change water once to ensure freshness). If you have access to a legume inoculant, lightly coat the seed with it prior to sowing. The inoculant will help to activate the nitrogen fixing ability of the caragana sooner.

Sow in rows the same as radish or any similar garden seed. An ordinary garden seeder will handle this seed nicely. Sow the seed at a depth of 3/4 to 1 inch, never more than 1 1/2 inches with 12 to 18 seeds to the foot. Fall sowing seed generally gives the best results when sown from October 1 to just before freeze-up. If sown in the spring, get the seed in just as early as possible, and if the soil freezes again after sowing, so much the better. Leave enough space for cultivation between the rows. The seedlings should average from 10 inches to 18 inches the first season, which is a good size for shelterbelt planting.

Growing conditions: Best growth on well-drained light and medium-textured soils.  Fertilization is not required.  Will tolerate slightly saline conditions.

For establishment of shelterbelts, planting of seedlings will in most cases produce the best results, they can be started from seed; providing the ground is well worked and free of weeds. Crop land can be weedy which will quickly choke out young emerging seedlings before are established. Whether started from seed or seedlings, it is necessary to keep the soil well cultivated on both sides and in the row for three or four years. This can be done quite conveniently with a small cultivator or disc. As the caragana grows, the cultivated strip will need to be widened. Never sow or plant caragana in a low spot where water may lie for even a short time in spring. The plants will likely die under wet conditions. For a caragana hedge plant 2-3 deeds 18 inches (45cm) apart ¾ to 1 inch deep in mid May.

AGROFORESTRY VALUE

Excellent for farm or field shelterbelts or landscape hedges where a tough hardy plant is needed. 'Ross' caragana is extremely drought tolerant that forms a dense hedge useful as a windbreak for snow and wind management.

This monitor is spectacular for the price. I am very pleased with it.
Size: 27 Inch
It arrived in tact and has zero blemishes or dead pixels. That's saying something when you have this many pixels too. The Freesync works great, it's fairly bright and the colors are amazing. They need to be detuned quite a lot since the gamut is way higher than most content is created for. Gaming is fantastic. I do not seem to have the advertised 1080P high FPS mode though. Perhaps they crossed up some of the promotional information for a different model. Still, I am very much enjoying 160Hz at 4k. I am playing through games again just to see them so clearly, and that's going from a 2k monitor of the same size. This display is superior. I wish the power button that's modeled to look like a joystick actually was one, don't be caught off guard by that. It's just a button. I knew that when I bought it but still. Kinda... iffy to make it look like one. I mounted the monitor on an arm. It weighs very little so it was easy. I never used the included stand, but it's very sturdy and I love that is flips vertically too. The headphone jack works nicely for my powered speakers and it switches between display port and HDMI correctly. My last monitor had to be restarted each time I went back to Display Port to get audio back. This monitor at the price I paid is insanely good. I'd been waiting for years for a good 4K panel with high refresh rate at 27". By far my favorite monitor size. I have zero intention of changing or upgrading from this panel until μLED is finally available. If this panel dies, I will get another until then.

Great with one annoyance
Very nice + hi-res. Each pixel is sharp thanks, I presume, to IPS. One criticism: there's no way to tell whether it's supposed to be 'on', except by seeing a picture. Very frustrating when the graphics card and the monitor at startup both kind of go: "Are you on? No? Then I'll turn back off." for what seems like 2 seconds and you have to try to guess whether the monitor is actually on. You can look down the slots at the back for lights, but one that's easier to see would be nice. Anyway, as you'll have seen, it has a literal 15:10 aspect ratio (even better than 16:10) so this is a rare monitor that's better for documents than the 16:9 monitors that are made for movies. I think the monitor may be a little small for ~4K, but you can't complain for the price. Would buy again, but please, give it an 'on' light.

I works fine so far as work display, not the cheapest but metal stand legs and overall good quality
Except the tiny stereo speakers that are a joke , just marketing since they are utterly useless as volume is so low. The 3 or 4 inputs available is great addition. The panel input buttons on the side works ergonomically when changing inputs and brightness (you will be changing brightness a lot during the day, trust me. It is not very bright but with 100%brightness is barely usable in low light indoor, at night it needs to go down to 25 ~20% instead. The images, (text) is crisp since 4K+ and extra lines gives more screen space for working , not the ideal format to watch movies as you know.Any case, I like it and recommend it. Color gamut and HDR 10 is just marketing but for text display and working space , works fine

Need to set 60Hz manually - otherwise "No Signal"
Size: 34
Works great as an office monitor - however the HDMI connection defaults to 3440x1440 at 100Hz and the monitor treats that as "No Signal" - it didn't actually work until I went into the display settings and changed it to 60Hz manually. The manual doesn't mention this defect at all, and I have no idea how a non-technical user would know to try this. The size is perfect for office work, especially compared to a 27" monitor which always feels just a little bit too small. The image quality is identical to a more expensive LG 27" monitor that I have next to it (it's a 4K running at 1440p to match pixel density). I don't use the speaker so I don't care about the sound quality. I'm not a gamer so I can't comment on gaming usage. The package includes VESA mount standoffs and even a screwdriver, so I was able to mount it to a monitor arm just with what was in the box! It's too bad that I couldn't order it without a stand, I hate to just throw that part away.

A Great Monitor: The Dell UltraSharp U4025QW Delivers
I recently invested in the Dell UltraSharp U4025QW and I am very happy with my choice. For anyone involved in creative/productivity type work like audio and video editing, spreadsheets, etc., this monitor won’t disappoint. The color and clarity are visually stunning. The 5K2K WUHD resolution on the 40-inch screen makes every detail pop, and the text is crystal clear, it makes a huge difference during long editing sessions. Videos look incredibly rich, and I'm noticing details in my footage I hadn't seen before. The 40” size is perfect for my work. The ultrawide 21:9 aspect ratio provides an enormous amount of screen real estate. I can have my editing timelines, mixer boards, and reference windows open all at the same time without constantly going back and forth between windows. The built-in hub functionality is also a plus for this monitor. The assortment of extra ports are incredibly convenient. It is a large investment but it’s a quality product. Highly recommended.
