👨‍🌾 GARDENING TIPS 👨‍🌾: Tanacetum vulgare

\n
    \n
  • \n
      \n
    • Most species thrive in full sun and well-drained soil; some tolerate partial shade.
    • \n
    • Regular pruning of spent flowers encourages bushy growth and prevents excessive self-seeding.
    • \n
    • Companion planting potential: repels pests in vegetable gardens (e.g., aphids, ants) and attracts beneficial insects.
    • \n
    • Because of their rhizomatous habit, containment may be necessary to prevent aggressive spreading.
    • \n
    • The best time to collect the leaves for drying, infusions, culinary uses is between April and July - just before Tansy begins to flower.
    • \n
    • Remove faded flowers to encourage fresh blooms; cut back in early spring to maintain shape.
    • \n
    • Human consumption of common tansy has been practiced for centuries with few ill effects, yet the toxic properties of the plants are cumulative and long term consumption of large quantities has caused convulsions and even death. \n
        \n
      • \n
          \n
        • So please don't eat too much of it.

👩‍🍳 COOKING AND DYING TIPS 👩‍🍳

\n

While edible uses are limited due to thujone and other bitter compounds, several species of Tanacetum have historical applications in:

\n \n
    \n
  • \n
      \n
    • \n

Culinary flavoring of bitters, liqueurs, or herbal teas (in very small amounts).

      \n \n \n
    • \n
    • \n

Folk medicine for digestive, menstrual, and parasitic ailments.

      \n \n
        \n
      • Tanacetum parthenium - used historically for cramps/migraine prevention because the leaves contain parthenolide
      • \n
      \n
    • \n
    • \n

Dyeing: yellow and green tones can be obtained from leaves and flowers, sometimes enhanced with mordants like alum or iron salts.

The Tales & The Botany : Tanacetum vulgare

\nIn the sixteenth century Tanacetum vulgare was considered to be "necessary for a garden" in England - a list compiled in or around 1525 by Thomas Fromond, a Surry landowner. \n \nThe plants were classified by species having a specific purpose or by species destined for a 'sophisticated pleasure garden'. \n \nIt was grown in the garden of Charlemagne the Great in the eighth century and in the herb gardens of Swiss Benedictine monks as a treatment for intestinal worms, rheumatism, fevers and digestive problems. \n \nAs it is also known for its pest-repellent properties, Tansy can help protect your garden from certain pests including: \n
    \n
  • \n
      \n
    • \n

Aphids – Tansy’s strong aroma is a natural deterrent for aphids, which are commonly found on plants like roses, vegetables, and fruit trees.

      \n
    • \n
    • \n

Japanese Beetles/Ants/Caterpillars - especially those that are commonly found on plants or vegetables

      \n
    • \n
    • \n

Flies – Tansy has been historically used to keep flies at bay, especially in areas where food is stored or on animal pastures.

      \n
    • \n
    • \n

Moths – Known as the "moth plant," Tansy’s leaves have been used to repel moths and protect stored goods like wool and fabrics

      \n
    • \n
    \n
  • \n
\nAccording to liquor historian A. J. Baime, in the 19th century Tennessee whiskey magnate Jack Daniel enjoyed drinking his own whiskey with sugar and crushed tansy leaf - I'll confirm, it is quite tasty! \n \nThe flowers make a bright yellow dye for those who are keen home dyers :) \n \n
\n \n

🌸 Floral Morphology

\n
\n

The flowers of Tanacetum species are typically small, tightly clustered, and range in color from bright yellow to pale cream or white.

\n

They are usually daisy-like or button-shaped, forming flat-topped inflorescences that attract pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and flies.

\n

Fruits are usually small achenes that are easily dispersed by wind.

\n

Leaves are often pinnately divided, fern-like, and aromatic when crushed. Their fine texture contrasts beautifully with the dense flower clusters.

\n

Stems can be erect or spreading, depending on the species, and many Tanacetum plants spread via rhizomes, forming clumps or colonies in suitable habitats.

\n \n \n
\n \n

🌱 Reproductive Biology

\n

Tanacetum species reproduce sexually via seeds and vegetatively via rhizomes. Flowers are usually insect-pollinated, supporting local pollinator populations.

\n

Seed germination varies by species but generally occurs in spring, while rhizomatous growth allows rapid colonization of suitable habitats.

\n

Most species are perennial and hardy in temperate climates, tolerating moderate drought once established.

\n

From a botanical standpoint, the Tanacetum genus offers an intriguing mix of ornamental beauty, chemical utility, and historical significance.

\n

Its diverse species connect horticulture, ethnobotany, and natural dyeing traditions, demonstrating the genus’s long-standing relationship with humans.

Fit My Dr Pen M7 Correctly, But Check Packaging Carefully Before Use
I purchased these replacement cartridges for my Dr Pen M7, and the fit was fine with no compatibility issues. They attached properly and worked as expected during use, so at least from a fit/function standpoint, they seem pretty standard. I also appreciate that the pack includes a variety of cartridge types and needle/pin counts instead of only one style. Having different options is useful depending on the area being treated and personal preference. One thing I did notice though is that the cartridges arrived in Dr Pen branded packaging, and I honestly wasn’t completely sure about the legitimacy/authenticity of them. They may very well be genuine, but it did make me pause a little since there wasn’t much additional verification information included. My biggest concern was that although the packages are labeled sterile, I noticed some type of brown residue/spotting inside one of the sealed cartridge packages. It appeared in multiple spots inside that particular package, so I immediately decided to throw that cartridge away rather than risk using it. Because of that, I would strongly recommend inspecting each cartridge carefully before use and sterilizing again yourself for extra precaution. With microneedling products especially, cleanliness and safety matter a lot. Overall, the cartridges themselves fit and functioned properly with my device, and I like the variety included, but quality control/sterility is something I’d advise paying close attention to before using them.

Great replacement micro needling cartridges.
Picked today up for replacements for my Dr Pen micro needler. They arrived individually sealed, ready for use. They appear to be compatible good quality product just like my originals. Love the price point and savings. They fit my device perfectly. These arrived at the Dr Pen cartridge box although do not have Dr Pen brand on cartridges appear high-quality similar in packaging of the originals. They do not have the pen, cap safety guard, but that's really not a needed part of the product. Make sure to verify you have the right device. Be aware they do not fit correctly in M8 devices. Great value for the money you get 21 piece micro, needling cartridges, various needle styles. The kit comes with 36 needle, 12 needle and nano cartridges. I have already used the Nano cartridge and they are super comparable to original cartridges quality, They do not drag on the skin easily move and dispense face serum product. So far, I've been super happy with the replacements.

21 Piece Pen Cartridges
This 21 piece microneedling cartridge set is an excellent value and gives a lot of versatility for different skincare needs. I really like that it includes three different tip styles: nano, 12 pin, and 36 pin. There are 7 of each variety included, which makes it easy to customize treatments depending on what area I’m focusing on and how gentle or intensive I want the session to be. The cartridges fit my Dr Pen device well and feel securely attached during use. Everything came individually packaged and clean, which is important for at home microneedling routines. The nano tips are great for product infusion and glow-focused treatments, while the 12 and 36 pin options work well for more targeted skin texture care. Overall, this is a convenient and affordable replacement set that’s perfect for anyone wanting multiple cartridge options in one package.

Wish I Knew if it is Surgical Grade Steel
I have a Dr. Pen A6, and these non-OEM cartridges are a great value. You receive twenty-one cartridges in various sizes, and each cartridge is individually wrapped. These pins come in three sizes: thirty-six pin, twelve pin, and nano. I had no issue inserting the cartridge and locking it into place, and I didn't notice any wiggling or looseness. The pins were sharp and did not tear or drag on my skin. Of course, you will see small pinpricks where you have treated. One thing I would like to know is whether these are made with surgical grade steel. I would prefer that they are, but I don't see that information anywhere in the listing. That said, I didn't notice any unusual irritation. I now have a good variety of cartridges to be more consistent with my pen usage. I will update this review if I notice anything related to the steel used.

Perfect for Husbands but Wives may Enjoy Reading it Too!
For a long time I've wondered what my love language is in particular because they all sound good to me. I love receiving stuffed animals from my husband so maybe it is gifts. But then I also adore undivided attention when we watch movies nearly every night, so maybe it is quality time. When my husband empties the dishwasher that is good so maybe it is acts of service. Well how about a compliment, that is nice too. I think I'm greedy, I want it all. lol So don't think your wife will only like just one love language. Maybe she wants touch, quality time and acts of service too. This book explains what the typical differences are in what men and women want in regards to love languages. It also wisely explains how to apologize to a woman in a sincere way that will make her melt. It deals with anger and women want less of that! At the end of the book there are two tests, one for him, one for her. You can then figure out what each other's love languages are. As the books says, sometimes you are bilingual. Also there are various dialects. This book also makes you realize why sometimes the love language works and at other times it does not get the points you think you are getting. Like when a woman is really busy, some things mean more than others. While she's in the kitchen she might want help with the kids instead of touch or when she is feeling down she might want a compliment to make her feel appreciated. So I think learn all the love languages and use them wisely. I'm a fan! Any man who adds these languages to his skill set is going to be way more desired than usual. Women pay attention and this is a way of getting your point across. Oh and at the end of the chapters there is an easy "phrase book" so you get tips on specific things you can do to speak each language. I'm giving this book to my husband and I really hope he reads it! I'm also happy I read it because I've got myself more figured out. To my husband I say more love languages please!!!! ~The Rebecca Review
