Monstera Burle Marx Flame

A Monstera of genuinely uncertain botanical origin — discovered among the extraordinary plant collection of Roberto Burle Marx, the legendary Brazilian landscape architect, artist, and botanical explorer whose Rio de Janeiro estate became one of the most significant private plant collections in South America, and named in his honor after being identified as a distinctive variety distinct from anything else in the genus. Because its origin was never documented before Burle Marx's death and no wild population has been definitively linked to it, the question of whether it represents a unique species, a natural hybrid, or a mutation of Monstera deliciosa remains unresolved — a botanical mystery that adds to its allure without diminishing its horticultural value in any way. What is unambiguous is the plant itself: a vining, hemiepiphytic climber that undergoes a dramatic and rewarding heteroblastic transformation from youth to maturity. Juvenile leaves are narrow, elongated, and lance-shaped — striking but not yet showing the plant's full character. As it climbs and matures, successive leaves become progressively broader, more heart-shaped in overall outline, and develop deep, wide sinuses that cut dramatically toward the midrib, spacing the resulting lobes far apart in a pattern that gives the mature leaf its characteristic flame-like silhouette from which the cultivar takes its name. The leaves are thick, leathery, and a rich deep glossy green throughout, and mature specimens can carry leaves reaching two feet in length — a significant and architecturally impressive presence in any interior space.

A tall, sturdy climbing support — moss pole, coco coir pole, or trellis — is essential for encouraging the plant's vining habit and unlocking the full dramatic mature leaf form; unsupported plants produce smaller, less deeply sinused leaves that never fully reveal the characteristic flame silhouette. Provide bright indirect light for the most vigorous growth and the fastest progression to mature fenestrated leaves — the plant tolerates medium light but grows notably more slowly and produces less dramatically lobed foliage in dimmer conditions. Water when the top 1-2" of medium is dry, in a well-draining mix of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir; the thick leathery leaves give the plant reasonable drought tolerance but it performs best with consistent moisture. Humidity of 60%+ supports the cleanest leaf emergence and best overall vigor, though average household humidity is tolerated. Maintain warm temperatures between 65-85°F. Toxic to humans and pets if ingested.

Great for Sun Allergy Rashes!
Scent: Unscented, Scent: Unscented
I have an autoimmune disease called Sjogren’s Disease. With that, for me, comes a sensitivity to the sun in the form of sun allergy rashes. Also with that, I did a deep dive on the best sunscreens and read a lot of reviews on here. I put some of the outer sides of elbows where my sun allergy rashes were when I received it. There was slight sting, but the skin there was already slightly broken. I really love the texture of it, how it feels on my skin and that there's no white cast. It’s moisturizing, too, with no greasiness. Absorbed really well.

The best mineral sunscreen
Scent: Unscented
I’m so impressed by this sunscreen! I’ve been using mineral sunscreens for years and this blows every other one I’ve tried out of the water. It is silky smooth and applies so easily, absorbs well and doesn’t feel greasy or heavy. It doesn’t leave a white cast but it still protects very well! Of course like any sunscreen it’s only as effective as your usage, so reapplying is paramount. The unscented truly has no smell to it, which is something I appreciate. Using it for the first time, neither myself or my fair kiddos got sunburnt. It’s just all around a fantastic, clean mineral sunscreen and will be my go to from now on!

Wellness Staple for Sensitive Skin
Scent: Pear & Coconut Water, Scent: Pear & Coconut Water
I’m becoming much more intentional about the products I use on and around my body, especially while traveling, and this sunscreen ended up being one of the best things we packed for our girls trip to Mexico. My friend has extremely sensitive skin and typically reacts to a lot of sunscreens, so we wanted something mineral-based, reef safe, and more wellness-conscious overall. We split one bottle between the two of us over about five days, and honestly it held up really well. It felt lightweight for a mineral sunscreen, blended in better than expected, and didn’t leave our skin feeling greasy or irritated in the heat. Most importantly, neither of us experienced sensitivity issues or breakouts during the trip. I also appreciated the peace of mind of using something reef safe while spending so much time in the ocean. It’s one of those products that aligns well with a more mindful, health-focused lifestyle without sacrificing effectiveness.

Love the scent
Scent: Tropical Breeze
This sunscreen has such a great scent and is easy to apply with no white cast. Skin doesn't feel clogged or sweaty. Easy to apply and distribute. Like that it's a zinc oxide sunscreen that is doesn't leave a white cast and has a wonderful tropical scent. Wish it came in SPF 50 or higher.

ACTUALLY unscented! Finally!
Scent: Unscented
I have been on a personal mission to find a truly unscented sunscreen, as I have extremely sensitive skin and medical conditions that cause me to have skin reactions to fragrance. I have tested out 10+ different sunscreens and even in those that do not list a fragrance, can still have a strong smell or scent due to one or more of their ingredients. This sunscreen truly is UNSCENTED. I was even able to use it on my face today, which until now I have been able to do successfully with only one other sunscreen. I have yet to try out this sunscreen in direct sunlight for a prolonged period of time, so I cannot speak for how effective the SPF 30 is for activities out in the sun, but I was able to comfortably wear it for walking my dog for 20 or so minutes while wearing a sun hat, which is normal use for me when it comes to sunscreen. I will come back and update this review if anything changes as far as sun sensitivity or if any burning takes place. Now for the cons: it felt a bit heavy or "stifley" on my face, but I have sensory processing issues so I'm sensitive, and there was pilling on my face hours later. So far I would recommend this sunscreen and am stoked to have discovered it. It is my current go-to for my body sunscreen, and haruhara wonder black rice SPF 50 velvet finish sunscreen is my go-to for face sunscreen
