Harry Lauder's Walking Stick (Corylus avellana 'Contorta')

Harry Lauder's Walking Stick is a classic choice when you want a plant that looks interesting even on the quietest days of the year. Its twisted branches create natural sculpture, adding structure and personality from fall through winter when most shrubs fade into the background. In spring and summer, fresh green leaves soften the outline while keeping the plant full and attractive. It is a slow-growing, long-lived accent that rewards simple placement and a little patience.

Distinctive Features

The main draw is the contorted, corkscrew branching that becomes most dramatic after leaf drop, especially when highlighted by low winter light. In late winter to early spring, dangling yellow catkins appear along the bare stems and add a subtle, seasonal show before the foliage emerges. The plant typically forms a rounded, multi-stem shrub that can be limbed up to show off the branching as a small specimen. Many plants are grafted, so removing straight suckers from below the graft helps keep the true twisted form.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Full sun to part shade, with best form and catkin display in brighter exposures.
  • Soil: Moist, well-drained soil is ideal, and it tolerates average garden soil when drainage is good.
  • Water: Moderate, keep consistently moist during establishment and water during prolonged dry periods once established.
  • USDA Zones: Hardy in zones 4 to 8.
  • Mature Size: Typically 8 to 10 feet tall and 8 to 10 feet wide, slowly reaching larger size in favorable conditions.

Ideal Uses

  • Focal Point: Place where winter branching can be seen up close, such as near an entry, patio, or a window view.
  • Winter Interest: Use as a seasonal highlight in mixed beds to keep the landscape engaging after leaf drop.
  • Specimen Planting: Give it open space so the twisted framework reads clearly from multiple angles.
  • Foundation Accents: Use to break up long foundation lines with a distinctive, architectural silhouette.
  • Cut Branches: Prune a few stems for indoor arrangements that show off the contorted shape.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Pruning: Prune in late winter to early spring to shape, remove crossing wood, and selectively thin for better branch definition.
  • Suckers: Remove any straight shoots from the base promptly, especially if the plant is grafted.
  • Watering: Water deeply during establishment, then maintain even moisture without saturating the root zone.
  • Mulching: Apply mulch to conserve moisture and reduce weeds, keeping mulch pulled back from the stems.
  • Site Selection: Choose a spot with good air movement and drainage to support long-term vigor.

Why Choose Harry Lauder's Walking Stick?

  • Four-Season Structure: Twisted branches provide strong architectural interest, especially in fall and winter.
  • Early-Season Detail: Late winter catkins add subtle color and texture when the garden needs it most.
  • Design Character: Adds a distinctive, collected look that elevates simple plantings.
  • Slow, Manageable Growth: Develops steadily without constant shearing or aggressive upkeep.
  • Conversation Starter: Unique branching draws attention and invites a closer look in every season.

If you want a shrub that works like living sculpture, Harry Lauder's Walking Stick is hard to beat. Give it room, keep the base clean of unwanted suckers, and let the branching take center stage. Over time it becomes a signature plant that makes the landscape feel more intentional even in the depths of winter.

Room divider
Color: Black, Color: Black
It was much simpler than anticipated. I don't think it's very sturdy and it lacks weight, but it's attractive.

Great room divider
Color: Black, Size: 4 Panel-88'', Color: Black, Size: 4 Panel-88''
This is a room divider and would work great as one! I’m using it as a cover for my car port/garage so you can’t look in and see my messy garage as easily and for what I’m using it for it’s a little not quite as sturdy as I need it to but I’m sure it’s not meant to be used outside anyways so I don’t fault the product since I’m not using it as intended… with that said though…. It still covers my garage beautifully and really does exactly what a I need it to! I’m sure the wind may blow it over if it gets too crazy but I don’t see it breaking by any means. The frame is metal and drilled together using long screws. It’s very well built. The cloth for the panels is this waterproof type material that’s kind of like the gazebo roof feeling. So it’s easy to clean and it’s easy to wipe. You can put it straight or bend the panels and either way it still stands up. You don’t HAVE to bend it to make it stand or anything. You can literally use it straight across like I am in the pictures. Overall very happy with this product and it’s also very tall so it truly covers a lot (hides a lot lol). I’m 5’8 so you can see it’s taller than me by the pic I took

OK. Drag to setup. Needs more stable feet
Color: Black, Size: 4 Panel-88''
I was glad to find these. The benefits of having them in a recording setup is helping suppressing noise for a vocal booth. It's a layer that surrounds the recording box. Nice! (But away from audio hardware or DAW). Here is the not so nice part: The feet! It's able to stand (as it needs to do this). But it cannot be bumped. If it does, it's coming down onto something. I believe the feet units are not wide enough (or long enough). That makes for an easier tumble risk. So far, they haven't, but it's like being in the woods over leaves - it feels dangerous with every step! (That's actually true). They are tall enough, wide enough, material OK. But the feet for the main assembly do not seem sturdy enough. There are ways to help that. I'm thinking a 2x4 to augment the base. Make them wider. It can be done. It was a drag to set these up, and I'm sure to modify them like i'd want them. But, they do come in at a much lower price that other similar dividers. Consider all this because I've seen more solid dividers ( with padding) that would basically be the 1/2 cost of these. But i'd think they'd be easier to assemble, stand sturdier, and without that feeling of an impending fall (or fail). This is my opinion. I hope it helps.
