Redouté was born in Saint-Hubert, Belgium, and began his artistic career as a painter of porcelain. He later turned his attention to botanical illustration, and in the early 1790s, he began working for the French royal family, creating botanical illustrations for their gardens at the Palace of Versailles and the Château de Malmaison.

Redouté's skill as a botanical artist quickly gained him a reputation as one of the most talented and accurate illustrators of his time.
