Fargesia 'Rufa'

Fargesia 'Rufa' is a clump-forming evergreen bamboo with fine green leaves, slender canes and a naturally rounded habit that fills out as new shoots mature. Its canes start fairly upright, then arch outward with age, giving the plant a soft fountain shape while the root mass expands gradually from the base.

This bamboo grows well in large containers, sheltered patios, balcony planting and planted screens for fine evergreen screening. It grows through short rhizomes, so it stays far more contained than running bamboo, while still needing enough root space as the plant widens over time.

Fine leaves, arching canes and contained growth

  • Growth habit: Dense bamboo with upright young canes and arching mature stems.
  • Foliage: Narrow evergreen leaves create soft, fine-textured cover through the year.
  • Cane detail: Fresh green culms can show warm reddish sheaths on new growth.
  • Container behaviour: Needs a large, stable pot with even moisture, drainage and root space.
  • Garden use: Privacy planting, sheltered borders and evergreen container planting.

Bamboo for containers and planted screens

Fargesia 'Rufa' has dense roots and leafy, arching canes. In gardens and large pots, fine leaves and arching canes form a dense evergreen screen.

Each cane lives for several years, while new shoots arise close to the base and gradually increase the density of the plant. Older or tired canes can be removed at ground level to open the plant and make space for fresh growth.

Keeping Fargesia 'Rufa' dense and well rooted

  • Light: Grow in bright outdoor light to partial shade, with shelter from the hottest afternoon exposure in summer.
  • Watering: Water deeply before the root ball dries through; container-grown bamboo reacts quickly to drought.
  • Soil: Use humus-rich soil that holds moisture while still leaving air around the dense root system.
  • Mulching: A loose organic mulch keeps planted roots cooler and reduces moisture swings around the base.
  • Temperature: Established plants tolerate cool temperate conditions best when protected from drying winter wind.
  • Repotting: Move container plants into a larger pot or divide them when roots fill the container and watering becomes difficult.
  • Feeding: Apply a balanced slow-release feed in spring for fresh shoots and leaf replacement.
  • Pruning: Remove weak, damaged or ageing canes at the base; trim sides only when shaping a hedge or screen.
  • Placement: Choose a sheltered outdoor position with space for the plant to widen and enough room for arching canes.
  • Growth rate: Moderate once established, with most visible increase coming from new shoots near the base.

Stress signs on Fargesia 'Rufa'

  • Rolled leaves: Check moisture deep in the pot or planting hole, especially after wind, sun or a warm dry spell.
  • Yellowing leaves: Some older leaves shed naturally, but widespread yellowing can follow drought, waterlogging or low nutrients.
  • Brown leaf tips: Review wind exposure, watering gaps and root restriction if leaf ends dry repeatedly.
  • Thin new growth: Check pot volume, spring feeding and root moisture if new canes stay weak.
  • Pests: Aphids, scale or spider mites can appear on sheltered plants; inspect new shoots, leaf undersides and dense inner canes.
  • Container stress: Fast drying, weak shoots and repeated leaf rolling can mean the root ball has filled the pot.

Handling and safety

Cut cane edges and dry splinters can scratch skin, so use clean secateurs and gloves when thinning older culms. Keep trimmed cane pieces and loose plant material away from pets or children who may chew them.

Botanical name background

Fargesia is named for Paul Guillaume Farges, a French missionary and plant collector associated with western China. Rufa means red or reddish, matching the warm tones often seen on fresh bamboo sheaths.

Fargesia 'Rufa' forms fine evergreen screening with arching green canes in large outdoor containers, sheltered borders or planted privacy screens.

Great Bulk Pack of Disposable Spoons for Everyday Use
The Amazon Basics Disposable Everyday White Spoons are a very practical and affordable option for parties, offices, events, break rooms, or everyday household use. The large 1000-count pack is especially convenient because it lasts a long time and helps reduce the need for constant restocking. The spoons are lightweight but still sturdy enough for most everyday foods like cereal, yogurt, desserts, soups, and side dishes. They don’t feel overly flimsy for normal use, which is important for disposable utensils. I also like the clean white design because it works well for casual gatherings, parties, school events, picnics, and office lunches. Having such a large quantity on hand is very helpful for busy households or larger events. The spoons are individually easy to grab and separate from the bulk packaging, making storage and use simple and convenient. Overall, this is a reliable and cost-effective bulk pack of disposable spoons that works well for everyday meals, gatherings, and large events.

Bulk spoons finally broke my bad habit
We used to grab those little 20 packs from the grocery store every couple weeks and it felt like I was always running out at the worst time. When I saw this giant box I got pretty stoked and pulled the trigger right away. They are exactly what you would expect from basic disposable spoons. Solid enough for everyday stuff like yogurt, ice cream, or takeout without bending too much. Nothing fancy but they get the job done every time. At about three cents each it feels like a much smarter way to buy them. Now that we have a thousand of them sitting in the pantry I catch myself using them way more often instead of washing silverware for small snacks. This box should easily last us a couple years and I am already glad I do not have to make those annoying little trips anymore.

BIG box of spoons
This is one big box of white plastic spoons. Probably more than you need for home use. I’ll probably end up donating most of these to my kid’s school for the teachers lounge. The spoons are not packaged in smaller boxes or bags inside. The quality is pretty good for “everyday” spoons. Compared to the spoons I get at my local grocery store which feel more like premium plastic ware, these are smaller and made of a softer plastic. I wouldn’t call them flimsy, but they are definitely not as sturdy as the other spoons. As far as value goes, I don’t think you can find a better deal for bulk plastic spoons (currently about $30 for 1000)

Huge box of spoons that actually hold up!
My patience started wearing thin as a result of having to always keep buying spoons due to all the cereal and yogurt that the volunteers have each morning. Finally, I decided to buy these gigantic boxes just to be over with it once and for all. These spoons are surprisingly durable given the extremely low price and the fact that they are just disposable plastic utensils. I tried using one on some dense frozen ice cream yesterday evening, and the handle did not even flex at all, let alone break. This product comes packaged in a fairly frail cardboard box which makes it occupy quite a bit of floor space in the pantry. Nevertheless, I find it completely worthwhile.
