Trachymene coerulea (formerly Didiscus caeruleus) Blue Lace Flower 'Blue Lace'

Elegant umbels of soft, powder-blue flowers held on tall slender stems above lacy ferny foliage — Didiscus 'Blue Lace' is the florist's secret weapon, producing one of the truest blue umbel forms available from seed and a quietly sweet evening fragrance that floats through the cutting garden on still summer afternoons.

A genuinely uncommon cut flower in British gardens, and a small treasure once you've grown it. Each lacy umbel is composed of dozens of tiny powder-blue to pale lavender-blue florets arranged in flat-topped clusters — the same architectural form as Ammi majus or wild carrot, but in a soft, gentle blue that few annuals can match. Tall stems (45–60cm) with finely divided ferny foliage. The plant is native to Western Australia and prefers warm, sunny, sheltered growing conditions in the UK. Half-hardy annual flowering July through September. Faintly but distinctly fragrant — a subtle sweet scent most noticeable in evening air. RHS Plants for Pollinators recognised, with the open umbels accessible to a wide range of bees and beneficial insects.

A note on growing

Sow indoors from March to April at 18–20°C. Cover seeds lightly with compost (about 3mm — they prefer some darkness for germination). Germination takes 14–21 days, sometimes longer. Pot on carefully — Didiscus dislikes root disturbance. Use individual modules or biodegradable pots that can be planted out intact. Plant out only after all risk of frost (late May/June) in a warm, sheltered position in full sun and well-drained soil. Didiscus is genuinely frost-tender and does not tolerate cold wet British conditions in early spring. Drought-tolerant once established. May benefit from light twiggy support if grown in exposed positions.

Where it shines

In the cutting garden as a properly elegant blue umbel cut flower — there are few annuals that provide soft powder-blue colour with such architectural quality. The faint evening fragrance is a quiet bonus. In modern romantic bouquets, where 'Blue Lace' adds the touch of soft blue that's notoriously hard to find in cut flowers. In sheltered cottage borders that get full sun — Didiscus needs warmth and shelter to perform well in British gardens. As a conversation-piece plant for gardeners who appreciate the unusual.

Plant alongside

For a soft sophisticated cutting scheme, combine 'Blue Lace' with Ammi majus (textural sibling — same family of umbel flowers but in white), Cosmos 'Daydream' (white-and-blush ombré matching the soft palette), and Cornflower 'Snowman' for the cool romantic palette. The powder-blue umbels also work beautifully against the deeper indigo of Clary Sage 'Oxford Blue' for a layered blue scheme.

I've tried MANY sunscreens. This is the best for the money you can buy.
Style: 4 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
I have a section in my closet reserved for the graves of past sunscreens. And there are A LOT. Reasons why this is the best for price point: 1. No white cast. Maybe 2%. Yes, there is a bad a white cast when you first put it on, especially if your face is still a tad damp from washing. But it almost completely disappears within minutes. And this is coming from someone who is of Southeast Asian descent, and currently have a natural a tan this time of year. I get tan because I don't apply it every 2 hours as recommended. I only use it when I'm working out outside and the sun is blasting my face. I live where it gets very sunny. 2. NOT oily. I have super oily skin and so many of my sunscreens makes my face more of an oil slick than normal. I have matiffying ones, that work well, but it gets expensive. 3. Fragrance free! I prefer to use as many fragrance-free products as possible. 4. DOESN'T STING EYES. I'm surprised at how many "sunscreens for the face" are out there that absolutely sting my eyes into waterworks. 5. Price-point. A giant tube (for the face) for all that? It will take me a very long time to go through it. For my body, I use cheaper fragrance-free mineral sunscreens, or sunscreens I want to get rid of. 6. I use a moderate strength prescription of Tretinoin, and those who know, know that without sun protection, the skin can get burned and irritated extremely easily. Not me! And I use Tretinoin every single night. I'm so glad Eucerin made this, I hope they never discontinue this!

Awful for normal/combo skin types!
Style: 4 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
Terrible for normal/combo skin! I applied sunscreen to my clean, dry face – without moisturizer. After waiting 25 minutes, I checked to see if the product hadn’t absorbed into my skin. It remained on top of my skin in a shiny, slippery, greasy film that rubbed off onto anything it touched. It’s settled thickly into crevices and fine lines, especially in the folds of my eyelids. There was so much shine – not glow – on my skin that it created flashback when I took a picture. Somehow, the sunscreen made my skin appear both oily and dry at the same time! Many other reviewers said that they successfully put make up over this sunscreen, but I cannot imagine how this would be successful, unless the makeup finish was incredibly matte. It’s the worst experience I’ve ever had with any sunscreen!
